C# - Interdependent Dropdowns In Gridview Using Declarative Programming?
Feb 14, 2010
I have a binded dropdown control in the gridview under edittemplate. Now i wanted to populate the second dropdown in the same gridview based on the first selection. I dont have options but use the gridview & declarative coding.
Also i am using the objectdatasource here.

I have 45 dropdown lists in my asp page. There are some methods that I can apply to all of these dropdowns. Is it possible to convert them into an array of dropdowns for ease of use?

I'm using Visual Web Developer 2010 Express with C# 2008 and .NET v4.0 to create a website which will have a database application. The database is SQL Server 2008.
I would have searched this forum for similar questions but I can't find a 'Search this forum' option! So I apologise if someone has already answered this.
I've successfully displayed rows from my database by dragging and dropping a GridView and an SQLDataSource control onto my page, and by using the Connection Wizard to set them up. But when I go live with my new pages, I will have to put my database in a different folder, and until I edit the web.config connection string to point at it I expect to get an exception.
I understand that when you try and open a database connection, this is the perfect place to use try...catch exception handling. But all the examples I can find put the try-catch code on the Button_Click event! Where should I put it? I can' t find anywhere where my controls actually attempt to open the database!
I know I could rip out what I've done and write all the code to connect to the database myself, but as I've finally got everything to work I would prefer to make the change as small as possible. So, what is the minimum change I have to make to add exception handling to my datasource/ gridview?

but I am rather confused about what to invest in. I heard that server-side code translates into client-side code. So, if you have an .aspx file, it will be converted to HTML/CSS/JavaScript. I have experience with the latter three technologies put into a rather dull text file and rendered by a web browser. My question is how much HTML/CSS/Javascript coding would I have to do when server-side programming? In other words, can someone using ASP.NET program purely on the server side and not bother to write for the client side? Of course, I don't care about server-side being translated into client-side, but I am wondering if client-side programming needs to be done explicitly and to what degree.

I'm building a Gridview and set it AutoGenerateColumns = true and bind it with a DataTable, but I want to create a new row in that gridview during OnRowDataBound (to separate the gridview to many parts). How can I do this?

I'm a complete novice in .NET. I am trying to implement a multi textbox / dropdowns / checkboxes search for a website using vb.net. How do I pass the values of my form fields to my griedview and display the search result on the same page?
I've written a stored procedure and specified it as data source for my gridview and defined parameter source as my CONTROLS (textboxes, checkboxes n dropdowns) on the form. What I want is when a user fills out one or multiple fields on the form, how do I display data in the gridview on the click of SEARCH button? Also is it necessary to write a codebehind for my search button or we can achieve the desired result in some other way?

What is the format for databinding to a complex "object"? I have a linq to sql class that has containment, i.e object.containedobject.I want to reference the sub objects fields declarative.So I've tried my MySubField.MyBasicProperty and that did not work, as well as, MySubField_MyBasicProperty.

I know that in ASP.NET (talking about 2.0 here primarily) one can set a property on an object that takes a collection of things (an enumerable type I'm guessing is the trigger) and then reference it declaritivly. For example:
<ObjectDataSource properties="blahblahblah">
<SelectParameters>
<asp:Parameter />
</SelectParameters>
</ObjectDataSource>
It is the <asp:Parameter /> part which is the root of my question. Say I wanted a simpler collection on a type. Say a List<String> or if generics are out, an IntegerCollection or StringCollection. How would I use that declaratively? Is <string value=''> allowed, or can I put raw values into it like <StringCollection>string, string, string</StringCollection> or what?
EDIT:
I feel like I was not clear enough in my question. I understand that ObjectDataSource implements its SelectParameters property as a ParametersCollection, and that one can use that property declaratively (in an ASPX page) to set up Parameter types within that collection. What I'm wondering is if I made something like StringCollection as a property on another control, is there a syntax (in ASPX) for adding strings to that collection? Or would I have to define a wrapping class like how DropDownList takes ListItems to fill its collection?

I'm trying to write a simple declarative html helper: [Code]....
The helper works fine if I embed it into the page I want to use it on. But if I move it to a separate .cshtml file and place that file in the ~/Views/Helpers directory, my view can't be compiled anymore because the helper is not found.According to Scott Gu's blog article on Razor it should work.
The only workaround I have found so far is placing the Html helper in App_Code and Referencing it as @[MYHTMLHELPERFILENAME].Echo(...) . This works but is a bit messy since I don't want to repeat the name of my extension method (Echo.Echo("inputstring"), nor do I want to put all of my html helpers into one single file (something like MyHtmlHelpers.cshtml).It certainly isn't what Scott announced either, so I guess I must be doing something wrong.

Using ASP.NET 2.0
I have a gridview populated by a SQLDataSource that is fairly complicated on a dataset changing constantly. It takes a second or so to fetch the data.
I want to have external dropdownlists for filtering the data that appears in the gridview, either with a FilterExpression or with parameters.
The problem is that querying the database to populate the dropdownlists takes a long time, because of the complexity of the query. The values in the dropdowns can vary based on other filters.
Is there some simple way of querying the database only once, for the main gridview, and then somehow querying the local (to ASP.NET) copy of the data to extract distinct values for populating the filtering dropdowns? I am thinking this might speed things up a bit.

I use declarative roles in my MVC.NET controllers and I have a custom membership & roles provider.This works fine:
[Authorize(Roles = "ADMIN")]
Also, I have a base MVC.NET CustomController class that all controllers derive from, and it has a "currentUser" property that is auto-fetched from the session on demand, so all controller code just refers to "currentUser" and doesn't worry about sessions, httpcontext, etc. I've implemented the membership provider properly, as it works with other parts of the framework that just deals with providers, but until now I had not tried to access the "User" principal from a view.What is the simplest syntax for check roles in a view page? I know I can use a helper to generate a partial view but I don't want that here, I want to explicitly wrap some sections of a page in some role checks.Something like this:
<% if(currentUser.IsInRole("ADMIN") { %>
...
<% } %>

I am storing a custom "Organisation" object as a session variable. One of the properties of the Organisation object is "OrganisationID" (integer). I have a DataSource that requires a parameter value to run, and I want to use a SessionParameter to populate this. In a previous version, I stored the OrganisationID directly as a session variable. In that case, I could easily access it like this:
[Code]....
However, how do I now access the OrganisationID property of an "Organisation" type session variable (called "Organisation")? I have tried this, which does not seem to work: <asp:SessionParameter Name="OrganisationID" SessionField="Organisation.OrganisationID" Type="Int32" />

I have a bunch of controls like the following in the EditItemTemplate of a ListView, with LINQDataSource:
[Code]....
I'm curious to know why the database won't update on the click of the Update button:
[Code]....
According to all I've read, the above code should be sufficient. Since CommandName is set to Update, it would seem that no code-behind is necessary.

It seems when including a DropDownList in an Editor Template (or a Partial with a HTML prefix) then following code does not select the correct item in the list:
<%: Html.DropDownListFor(model => model.CountryCode, Model.Countries) %>
The works as expected when not in an Editor Template.
Interestingly enough if I apply the code above to both parent view and editor templates, the editor template drop downs are set to that of the the parent view's value.I have simple repro to simulate this problem, should someone want to have a look at it.
I am using ASP.NET MVC 3.0.

I'm a seasoned programmer with years of experience in Windows Forms development using different programming languages as already stated in this question: Will learning WPF improve my skills in ASP.NET? ASP.NET or any Web based programming language doesn't feel natural for me to explore or to use. Although I am unfamiliar with Web based technologies, my curiosity about these grows and grows. In addition to it, I am aware of the market place Web based programming takes. I would like to expand my knowledge and experience to the Web, though would it be just to know what I'm talking about instead of speculating whatever.
My experience as an information and process systems developer allows me to understand the concepts and some of the basics. I am aware that Web based applications are stateless, for instance, and that I need to use session or viewstate variables to keep the information the user is working with alive, otherwise I would loose them. I also understand the basics of Ajax based controls such as the UpdatePanel, which is to update or to refresh only a part of a UI page rather than reloading everything through the connection again. I can get that CSS defines styles for your page's sections and that you may change radically your Website's aspect just by changing the CSS reference. I am also aware of masterpages, which I don't really understand, in fact.
Programming Model
I just watched this video about choosing the right model for me/my application:
Choosing the Right Programming Model. If looks like ASP.NET MVC, which I thought was the best approach, is more for the veteran Web developers, people who are comfortable with Web applications. I have used a lot of DataBinding in Windows Forms, and WebForms seems to be more what I'm looking for into ASP.NET, until they say that MVC allows for Unit Testing, TDD and Agile methodologies, which I adhere to, as a certified Professional Scrum Master. I'm a bit mixed up on what will be more natural for me speaking of programming model.
Questions
Taking into account my base of knowledge and my experience, what programming model do you think I'm going to be more comfortable with? Will choosing one over the other allow me to get acquainted enough with ASP.NET to one day try the other model? In the video about choosing the Programming Model both sat on ASP.NET, I heard about DataBinding while using Web Forms, but no mention of DataBinding in the MVC model. Is there any possible DataBinding in MVC?

I have been asked to create a small decision making program in asp.net. The criteria is that is must be table driven and not code driven so managers can make changes to the questions and responses. I was curious if anyone has seen an example online before?
I wouldn't taking a peek at how someone else accomplished this. I believe I have a good handle on the database side, I am more concerned on the display side.

I have a web flow (asp.net) which has a drop down and a check box.
When the check box is ticked, I need to disable some fields in that form.
When a specific value is selected from the check box, I need to disable other fields.
I specify the checkbox like this:
<%=Html.CheckBox("IsResponseUnavailable", Model.IsResponseUnavailable)%>
And the drop down like this:
<%= Html.MyDropDownList(string.Format("Questions[{0}].Answer", i), (IEnumerable<SelectListItem>)ViewData["Periods"], Model.Questions[i].Answer)%>
Where MyDropDownList is an extension of Html.DropDownList
I've heard about auto-postback - but unsure how to use it
