Javascript - Learn Any More Programming Language?

Jul 21, 2010

As a web programmer do I need to learn any more languages to enhance my career? I work in a .NET environment and am good at C#, but have zero skill in VB. For client side scripting I use javascript, jQuery and PrototypeJS. Should I learn any more languages or do you think that what I know is enough for web programming?

C# - How To Learn Ruby On Rails As A Complete Programming Beginner

May 8, 2010

I want to build a scalable dynamic Web Application. I have never programmed an Object Oriented language before. Or, let's just say I am completely new to programming, because the previous experiences aren't worth talking about.

I know I have a really big task ahead of me ^^ but I wanted to get into coding for the last 10 years and now that I'm finally doing it, I would like to know how to get there in the most efficient way.

Any good books/tutorials you could recommend?

Start Batch Job From IIS / Start Exe File With System.Diagnostics.Process.Start With Another Account Is Disabled?

Oct 28, 2010

What is the right approach when users (authenticated domain admins) should be able to start batch jobs (usually exe files) from an IIS (7.x) aspx (c#) page? This is an intranet site. The batch jobs have to run on the web server as Domain Admins. The website pool is executed by network service or some similar restricted account in AD.

Approaches I can think of (and their disadvantages):
1. Start exe file with System.Diagnostics.Process.Start with another account. This feature is disabled in IIS 7.x, how do I allow it?

2. Create a sheduled task and call scheduled task-api. This unmanaged dll is giving VS compiler warnings because it's unsafe to call from managed code.

3. I suppose there's a better approach, because the previous suggestions doesn't appear safe or robust.

Javascript - How Much Client-side Programming Is Needed When Doing Server-side Programming

Mar 16, 2011

but I am rather confused about what to invest in. I heard that server-side code translates into client-side code. So, if you have an .aspx file, it will be converted to HTML/CSS/JavaScript. I have experience with the latter three technologies put into a rather dull text file and rendered by a web browser. My question is how much HTML/CSS/Javascript coding would I have to do when server-side programming? In other words, can someone using ASP.NET program purely on the server side and not bother to write for the client side? Of course, I don't care about server-side being translated into client-side, but I am wondering if client-side programming needs to be done explicitly and to what degree.

C# - Registering Routes On Session Start Not Application Start?

Jan 26, 2011

I am trying to register the route collection in .net based on each session. The code I have works fine, you goto website/username and it loads the correct sub pages, but you have to restart the application to goto website/username2 to load those sub pages. But when the application is restarted the second one works, but then not the first one. Is there some way to create a different route collection per session not per application using system.web.routing.

C# - Start Timer On Web Application Start

Jun 8, 2010

I would like to start a System.Threading.Timer in my application when it launches (maybe deploy is the correct word). I have seen that you can use Application_Start() but this is only fired once the first request comes to the application. I need the timer to start as soon as the application is running so that it can check for work to process even if a user is not interacting with the site. How can I get the application to start the timer once it is up and running?

Iis7 - Unable To Start Debugging On The Web Server - Couldn't Start Debugging VS 2010 - II7 - Win 7 X64

Jan 11, 2011

I am running Visual Studio 2010 (as Admin), IIS 7 on Windows 7 x64. I am able to run the ASP.NET web site in IIS 7 without debugging just fine, but when I press F5 to debug it, I get: Unable to start debugging on the web server. Could not start ASP.NET debugging. More information may be available by starting the project without debugging. Unfortunately the help link is not helping me much and leads down a heck of a large tree of things. I checked the following:

Security requirements — I don't recall having to do anything special before. The worker process in IIS7 is w3wp.exe. It says that if it's running as ASPNET or NETWORK SERVICE I must have Administrator privileges to debug it. How do I find out if I need to change something here? Web site Property Pages > Start Options > Debuggers > ASP.NET is checked. Use custom server is set to the URL of the site (which works fine without debugging). Debugging is enabled in web.config. Application is using ASP.NET 3.5 (I want to move to 4.0 eventually but I have some migration to deal with). Application pool: Classing .NET AppPool (also tried DefaultAppPool). Surely it shouldn't be that hard to install IIS, VS, create a web site, and start testing it?

Force A New Start Of "Cassini" When Start Debugging A New Instance Of Web Application?

Feb 25, 2011

In our ASP.NET application we perform some initializations upon the Application Start event. When the application is started in visual Studio 2010 with 'Debug->Start new instance' the ASP.NET Development server does not start new, and my Application's Start event is not fired. My workaround is to manually stop the development server - is there a setting to force this automatically?

Starting To Learn Silverlight?

Feb 14, 2010

At the moment I am starting to learn Silverlight. I have expriences in ASP.NET and like the concepts of "Masterpages. Does Silverlight provides a similar concept ? I have read a little bit about the Silverlight Navigation Framework. Is this a good replacement for "Masterpages" ?

Makes it sense to combine ASP.NET and HTML (with Javascript) with Silverlight or is it more recommandable to design and write pure Silverlight applications ? Mybe in the ner future I will start to develop an intranet (business) application which will have many and complex user interaction (it should behave like a windows client applicion). I think Silverlight is the better choice than ASP.NET !? Makes it sense also to start to use/learn the WCF RIA Services immediatly ? Are there good (VS) templates to start with Silverlight or which are a good basis / starting point for a new Silverlight application ? Unfortunately I am missing "Starter kits" on [URL] like the starter kits on www.asp.net !

Learn About Quickbooks And Vb.net Web Application?

Feb 7, 2010

I'm going to be working on an application where I would like to provide an option to sync some things with quickbooks (i.e. add customer or invoice in web app, click button sync to quickbooks). I'm having trouble finding a good tutorial or sample code to use asp.net (preferably in vb.net but I can convert it) to exchange the information. I have the quickbooks sdk and the web connector installed, but I'm not sure where to start. I wanted to try to learn how the quickbooks part would work before I got to far into the app and find out the data structure was wrong.

ADO.NET :: LINQ To SQL / Learn Basics?

Nov 22, 2010

I'm trying to implement a small server/client web service to understand the fundamentals of WCF. I've created both the client and the server and so far have them communicating with each other through a very simple getter method. I've added in a database to the server and have a LINQ to SQL connection (I'm not sure if that's the proper terminology).

What I would like to know is, where can I learn the fundamentals now, for example: returning the number of rows into the client console window and using the basic CRUD functions from the client to update the database? I don't want to go to deep to soon, as I would like a bit of a foundation to work off before it starts to get really complex.

Keep Working On Project On MVC 1.0 Or Stop - Learn 2.0?

Feb 25, 2010

Few months I've started learning ASP.NET MVC 1.0. Although hard in the beginning, now I've made huge progress so that I'm working on something serious I can show to my colleagues. But, now MVC 2 is almost out there. Now I would like to know if MVC 1.0 and MVC 2 are profoundly different. In fact, I wonder if I need (first) to finish what I am into or (secondly) I need to stop everything and learn first MVC 2. To illustrate my point, I'd say: Is migrating from MVC 1.0 to MVC 2 the same scale as migrating from Web Form to MVC 1.0

Any Good Source Code To Learn MVP From?

Sep 15, 2010

i know MVC is the future but for some of us still stuck in the good old webform land, i'm trying to learn how to do TDD and introduce better testing for our current application...

basically the asp.net 2.0 c# web app is quite complicated with some logic in sproc, some in the javascript via json data processing, some in user controls and some in the code behind. not to mention some libraries here and there to make it merrier. i have literally no idea how to even begin to break things down to smaller chunks to do any testing.
