C# - What's Functionality And Methods To Add "BasePage" Class
Apr 4, 2011
What cool functionality and methods do you add to your ASP.net BasePage : System.Web.UI.Page classes? Here's something I use for authentication, and I'd like to hear your opinions on this:
protected override void OnPreInit(EventArgs e)
{
base.OnPreInit(e);
// Authentication code omitted... Essentially same as below.
if (_RequiresAuthentication && !(IsAuthorized))
{
RespondForbidden("You do not have permissions to view this page.", UnauthorizedRedirect);
return;
}
}
// This function is overridden in each page subclass and fitted to each page's
// own authorization requirements.
// This also allows cascading authorization checks,
// e.g: User has permission to view page? No - base.IsAuthorized - Is user an admin?
protected virtual bool IsAuthorized
{
get { return true; }
}
My BasePage class contains an instance of this class:
public class StatusCodeResponse {
public StatusCodeResponse(HttpContext context) {
this._context = context;
}
/// <summary>
/// Responds with a specified status code, and if specified - transfers to a page.
/// </summary>
private void RespondStatusCode(HttpContext context, System.Net.HttpStatusCode status, string message, string transfer)
{
if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(transfer))
{
throw new HttpException((int)status, message);
}
context.Response.StatusCode = (int)status;
context.Response.StatusDescription = message;
context.Server.Transfer(transfer);
}
public void RespondForbidden(string message, string transfer)
{
RespondStatusCode(this._context, System.Net.HttpStatusCode.Forbidden, message, transfer);
}
// And a few more like these...
}
As a side note, this could be accomplished using extension methods for the HttpResponse object. And another method I find quite handy for parsing querystring int arguments:
public bool ParseId(string field, out int result)
{
return (int.TryParse(Request.QueryString[field], out result) && result > 0);
}

Is that possible? The reason why am doing this is because I need to parse that variable into a an JQuery function so I wanted JQuery to read that field. Can I Assign that value in base class or I have to do it within default.aspx pageload method?

I have a MasterPage project which is a class library project (it includes themes, style sheets, menus etc) and all applications use them.
I am using the BasePage concept for dynamically adding title,meta tags and descriptions. This BasePage Class inherits system.UI.Page and the aspx pages in the project inherits the BasePage class.
Now i need to move this BasePage class from my application to the Master Page Project so that all the projects/applications can reuse the same code.
I tried add the basepage.cs in the App_code folder and tried calling it in the page directive like below
<%@
Page
Language="C#"
MasterPageFile="~/Master/Layout/MasterPage.master"
AutoEventWireup="true"
CodeBehind="xxxx.aspx.cs"
CodeFile="xxxx.aspx.cs"
Inherits="xxxx"
ValidateRequest="false"
EnableEventValidation="false"
ViewStateEncryptionMode="Never"
CodeFileBaseClass="~/Master/App_Code/BasePage<Page>"
Title="Title"
Meta_Keywords="xxxx,yyyy,zzzz"
Meta_Description="This is a test" %>
But i am getting error
Could not load type '~/Master/App_Code/BasePage<Page>'.
This was working fine till the BasePage class was inside the application. But once i moved it out of the project and added it to the master page project i getting this error.

I am beginner in web applications development. I started one little project and host it on source forge "https://homoco.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/homoco". And I started implementing authentication in this application to learn how it works. From my experience people never use out of the box things so I want to implement this stuff alone (like in real world projects). So some questions:
1) Is there any reason to use membership out of the box? To use database table schema, stored procedures etc. that tool generate for developer. I think that this lower control over code and I decided to implement it my self. I don't know if I am right.
2) Is my approach in this demo project good or bad (if someone have time I like to do just a little code review)? I created database based on business rules. Not using database schema that membership provider require. Extend "MembershipProvider" class to satisfy my needs. Implement queries to database myself.
3) Now, this question is a little wired but I have to ask it. If we make custom Membership Provider and do sql queries alone, implement all MembershipProvider class methods ourselves, and in application use Membership.blabla() why is this approach different from not extending MembershipProvider class and putting all this methods in some unique class and call its methods then? I hope that someone understand what I ask here.
I am sorry for three questions, but I really trying to find the best way to implement this feature in my demo project like it is a real world application.

We are trying to use a BasePage class (which inherits from Page) to populate and set the Meta Keywords and Meta Description Tags. I am using masterpages and below is an example code extract... According to examples on the internet, I could then set this also via the Page Directive using the MetaKeywords and MetaDescription properties, but they do not appear.
I have tried setting the CodeFileBaseClass="MyNamespace.UI.BasePage" but this does not work either. Using debug I can see that the BasePage classes' MetaKeywords and MetaDescription properties are not being set within my content page. I can access the properties but not set them.

We are using nested master page the master page is seperate class library project and all the other projects refer to them. We wanted to have a basepage class which load title, meta tags and keywords dynamically. It was working fine till it was inside the main project. We wanted the basepage class to be more generic and to have it reside in a single place. So i tried created a seperate class library project but i getting error "Could not load type" ..
How to have the basepage class outside the project?

I have the following code:
[Code]....
I would like the functionality of namespaces inside of a class, as in something that would let me call Step2.Execute() instead of having to put Step2_ in front of a whole bunch of functions. I don't want to have to create separate classes / modules for step1, step2, etc.
Is there a way that I can accomplish namespace functionality from inside a class?

I have a .net project whose part of the functionality is xls transformation. I now want to move that functionality away from the main project to a separate class library project.
I have no problems moving classes and accessing them, but part of the resources that I wanted to move were xslt files that define the transformations. Those files were originally located in the special asp.net folder: App_Data and then accessed using Server.MapPath(~/App_Data/XSLT/anXsltFile.xslt)
I wanted to move those files to that separate library as well, but not sure how to approach it, and how to access those files within the class library.

I have a user control with a number of methods. I also have a dataset object that I'm filling in one method, but I also need to access that same dataset (and the data in it) in another.
I am filling the dataset from some xml that I get from a webservice when someone clicks on a button. The data from the dataset is then bound to a listbox control. When someone selects an item in the list control (I have autopostback set to true on it) it then fires off another method and it's this method where I need to access the data in the dataset, but when I check the immediate window it's telling me that the dataset is set to null.
Where am I going wrong?

We have a base class that all our webpages in our application inherit from. I have a static method in the base class which when called will clear values from the application cache. Now the issue is this method needs to be triggered from a source outside the current application. I there any way this can be accomplished without creating an aspx page that will call this base method on page load.

I want to retrieve private (implementation and other) methods of a class which implements an interface and also is derived from (inherits) a base class.
How can I achieve this using reflection? Is there anyother way to achieve this?
This is wat m tryin to do. I need to view these private methods and their contents, I don't want to invoke them.
Dim assembly As System.Reflection.Assembly
Dim assemblyName As String assemblyName = System.IO.Path.GetFullPath("xyz.dll")
assembly = System.Reflection.Assembly.LoadFile(assemblyName)
assembly.GetType("myClass").Getmethods(Bindings.NonPublic)
assembly.GetType("myClass").GetMethods(BindingFlags.NonPublic) isn't working

is there any tools within VS2008 or Free 3rd Party tools where i can generate a Diagram of Class Methods and Code Behind events. think of the Table Diagram of SQL, it will show all fields, Primary Keys and to what table it is connected via foreign keys, etc.That is what i wish to make, in a much faster way, where it will show all class and within it is all the methods then linking them are the Code behinds and the event where the class is called.

I am developing a couple of small ASP.NET application and would like to know what pattern. approach do you use in your projects.
My projects involve databases, using Data access and Business logic layers.
The data-access approach that I was using so far is the following(I read in some book and liked it):
For DAL layer:
Creating an abstract class that will define all database manipulation methods to implement.
The abstract class will contain a static "Instance" property, that will load (if instance == null) an instance (Activator.CreateInstance) of the needed type (a class that implements it).
Creating a classes that implement this abstract class, the implementation will be according to the databases (SQL, mySQL and etc) in use.
With this I can create different implementation according to database in use.
For BLL layer:
A class that encapsulates all all retrieved fields , and static methods that will call the DAL classes.

I have a hierarchy in my website project as below:
[CustomControl1 - folder]
- CustomControl1.ascx
- CustomControl1.css
- CustomControl1.js
I load css and js files dynamicaly based on which controls are used on particular page. I am doing it by using following code:
[code]....
where AddLinks method adds HtmlLink controls to Page.Header with href attribute set to coresponding css and/or js file.
I would like to add Interface that would force new controls to have AddLinks method but it is impossible since it is a static method. Because my custom controls inherit from Control class I cannot use abstract class and/or virtual methods either. How can I achieve my goal?

I need to get a list of all of these webforms.
As the subject reads, how can i accomplish this ? All my webforms inherits from a class called "BasePage". It can also suffice with only getting a list of all the webforms in the application, regardless of base class since i can check inheritance later in code.
Reason i'm asking is because i'm building my menu and i'm implementing security enforced user visibility based on what pages there are in the webbapplication, and what roles each page demands, and display these to the user in the menu.
Using sitemaps are insufficient, i need to provide much more info for all the pages i have on my system.
Using this technique i can query my "PageProvider" for like:
GetAllPagesVisibibleToUser(MembershipUser user)
DoesUserHaveAccessToPage(MembershipUser user, BasePage forPage)
I'm also planning on implementing this technique on WebUserControls.

I have a basepage class which holds a bunch of properties, and specifically a context reference to entityframework
I have a standard .aspx page that inherits from the base page like so
public partial class myinterviews : BasePage
I have a standalone .ascx page, it has a grid and a datasource. This .ascx page is apart of the .aspx page that inherits from the base page. How can I reference the methods, properties from the base page from within my .ascx page?

I have an extension method as follows:
public static class PageExtensions
{
public static int GetUserId(this Page targetPage)
{
var user = Membership.GetUser(targetPage.User.Identity.Name);
return (int)user.ProviderUserKey;
}
}
Now in a page I need to use this method in a static WebMethod, so I have added another 'extension method' to PageExtensions:
public static int GetUserId()
{
return (int)Membership.GetUser(HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name).ProviderUserKey;
}
and I call it as follows in my WebMethod: PageExtensions.GetUserId()

I'm new to programming in ASP.NET, but I'm making my way through Wrox's Beginning ASP.NET 3.5 in C# and VB.NET.
I'm at a section where I'm creating a BasePage. I successfully created a BasePage by creating a new class file in my App_Code folder called BasePage.cs with the following code:
[Code]....
If I run that code everything works out fine. The page loads and all is well. But, if I try to do the same thing to a page that uses my MasterPage.master file, I get the following error:
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Description:
An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Why is that? In the example code from the book (that also uses a MasterPage.master file), everything excutes and runs just fine. But in my test, I get the above error. I've tried comparing my pages to the books included source pages, but I can't find any differences.
