Mvc 3 Pre-select Html.DropDownListFor Not Working In Nerd Dinner?

Jan 26, 2011

Learning about dropdown lists, Im trying to add a RSVP create page for nerddinner as in Scott Gu's blog with a Html.DropDownListFor listing available dinners. I can get the dropdown list populated but I cannot get the dropdown to pre select the value ("Sample Dinner 2") I want. Im using an initilizer to seed a few dinner objects in the db. The database is sql ce 4 using a EF 'code first approach'. Sorry I know this is a v common problem and hate to ask, but honestly have spent quite some time on this but cant get it to work:

ViewModel

public class RSVPViewModel
{
public SelectList DinnersList { get; set; }
public RSVP Rsvp { get; set; }
public string SelectedItem { get; set; }
}
[code]...

So is not preselecting the dropdownlist with the value "Sample Dinner 2" when the page loads. The list displays ok and sets the correct DinnerID when I make a selection and click Submit.Tries this also:

@Html.DropDownListFor(x => x.SelectedItem, Model.DinnersList)

but doesnt set or bind to Rsvp.DinnerID.This preselects from the list but doesnt bind (or set Rsvp.DinnerID)

@Html.DropDownList("DinnersList")

I want to keep it mvc3 so want to implement with strong type using ViewModel approach (no ViewData) and preferably using Html.DropDownListFor (not Html.DropDownList).Viewbag seems unnecessary for this case.Thinking I should be using a selectList of selectListItems I tried this verbose approach :

RSVP rsvp = new RSVP();
string selected = "2";
List<SelectListItem> dinners = new List<SelectListItem>();

foreach (Dinner dinner in dbc.Dinners.ToList())
{
SelectListItem slDinner = new SelectListItem();
slDinner.Value = dinner.DinnerID.ToString();
slDinner.Text = dinner.Title;
slDinner.Selected = (slDinner.Value == selected);
dinners.Add(slDinner);
}
var dinnersList = new SelectList(dinners, "Value", "Text", selected);
var viewModel = new RSVPViewModel { DinnersList = dinnersList, Rsvp = rsvp, SelectedItem = selected };

However still no work. Should I be making use of the ViewModel SelectedItem property in: @Html.DropDownListFor.. somehow? Something like :@Html.DropDownListFor(x => x.SelectedItem, Model.DinnersList)but how to I get a selected value to set Rsvp.DinnerID. I think thats called binding.

Forms Data Controls :: Can't Change Width Of Columns

Jan 30, 2010

I have a gridview that was quite easy to setup and pull all the reqested database info from an object data source in my BLL. However for the life of me I cannot get any of the columns to change there widths. If I change the columns footer, header, and item style to something around 50px or as large as 5000px it will not change whatsoever. The gridview width as a whole is left blank. Currently I have a phone number column that is the default column size that is overflowing the entire grid. Is there some trick to adjusting column widths in a gridview? It should be as simple as going to the smart tag, editing columns, and changing each ones style to the width I want?

How To Set The Width Of A Webpage, So That It Wont Change When The Browser Is Shrunk

Mar 4, 2010

Hi thanks for your effort in trying to reply for my post.I know how to add an asp.net menu to a master page, But its not so neat and i am trying to add a menu which is similar to

http://javascript-array.com/scripts/simple_drop_down_menu/

Its a Html page and not an asp page, i tried adding the menu, style sheet, javascript to my asp.net master page page by making some alterations to the code but it didnt really work. I.e. it dosent fit in well with the other components, the components below it are being pushed away to the right and i have checked the css several times but nothing is obvious.

I was wondering if there are any specific changes that needed to be done in order to accomodate it.I would be happy to paste my code if somebody would like to observe and point out why addng the menu is causing imbalance to the page .

C# - Get Html Table Width To Fit Screen Using Literal .net Control?

Feb 24, 2011

I'm building a html table dynamically in an ASP.NET code behind file using C#. I basically loop through a set of data which is an unknown number of records and split a string containing all the values to make the required number of tds. I display the html by assigning it to an asp:Literal control. However I can't get the table to fit the screen - the browser is adding a horizontal scroll bar and the full table is well off the screen. I tried in IE 8 and FF 3.6.13. Most things I've read online about it say to set the width to 100%. I'm doing this but it's having no effect.

<div id="paging">
<asp:Button ID="btnPrev" runat="server" Text="Prev" CssClass="niceInput" onclick="btnPrev_Click" Enabled="False" />
<asp:Button ID="btnNext" runat="server" Text="Next" CssClass="niceInput" onclick="btnNext_Click" Enabled="False" />

Web Forms :: What Is The Easiest Way With JavaScript To Change The Width And Height Of An Webpage?

Dec 22, 2010

I now that I can just define the width and height of a page with the div tag to allow for dragpanels to work, but it messes things up with some browsers when rendering, sometimes shrinking the actual content to allow for the complete page and width to be shown such as on the IPAD. I have tried the Javascript below, but it doesn't work, and whenever I try to resize a page manually, it puts my computer into never never land.

Anyone have a clean Javascript that will change the width and height dynamically as I am moving a dragpanel.

I can move the dragpanel, but it snaps back as soon as I let go so in essense it doesn't work.

Forms Data Controls :: Find Textbox In GV Without ID, Then Change Height/width?

Apr 3, 2010

I've been working with this tutorial:

[URL]

It's basically how to create an editable gridview.

I've got it up and working, but I need to change the width/height of the textboxes when the gridview is in edit mode.

The problem is, when the textboxes are rendered, they don't have ID's so I can't use FindControl to modify the textboxes.

Adding textboxes in the template items just created an independant - textbox that doesn't do anything.

My question is, how can I find these textboxes & change their height/widths, or how can I find these textboxes & assign ID's to them...so I can modify their height/widths?

Here's a snippet of what I've been playing with....haven't had any luck though...I'm probably way off:

Standard Method For Calculating Fixed Width Values For Tables In HTML?

Feb 4, 2011

Is there a standard method for calculating fixed width values for tables in HTML? Right now, I'm working on formatting tables on a web page to be a fixed width, I have a table that's within another table, when testing the page in IE I notice that the alignment of the colon is off as the second picture below illustrates. My intention is to make sure the colons are properly aligned as they are in Firefox and was just curious if the misalignment was due to the settings in the HTML or if it has more to do with how the browser renders the page.

Firefox:
Internet Explorer:

UPDATE: Sorry for not providing any reference code, here's a snippet of the particular section I'm working with.

<div style="width: 1600px; text-align: center; position: absolute; top: 10%; left: 0%;">
<span id="labelInstructions" style="font-size: xx-large;">PAGE TITLE <br><br></span>
<table style="width: 1000px;" align="Center" border="0">
<tbody>
<tr>
<td style="width: 1000px;"><label for="FileUpload1" style="font-size: x-large;">ENTER: </label><input name="FileUpload1" id="FileUpload1" size="70%" type="file"></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td style="width: 1000px;"><span id="fileUploadError" style="color: Red; font-size: medium;"><br><br></span></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td style="width: 1000px;">
<table style="width: 1260px;" border="0">
<tbody>
<tr>
<td style="font-size: x-large; width: 800px;" align="right" valign="top">FILE INSTRUCTIONS:</td>
<td style="font-size: x-large; width: 1800px;" align="left" valign="top">INSTRUCTION 1<br>INSTRUCTION 2<br></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td style="font-size: x-large; width: 800px;" align="right" valign="top">FILE EXAMPLE:</td>
<td style="font-size: x-large; width: 1800px;" align="left" valign="top">EXAMPLE 1<br>EXAMPLE 2<br><br></td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
</div>

I know it's ugly, just a note, this is an ASP.Net generated webpage and I'm setting the attributes of the HTML elements pro-grammatically from the code behind. I sorta inherited this and my employer wants to keep major changes to a minimum. UPDATE 2: When I adjust the inner table width I can get it to align in IE when set to 1377px. For Firefox, the sweet spot for alignment is 1260px.
