Design - Add Dynamic Content To .net Webforms Application?

Dec 2, 2010

i am working on a asp.net webforms app, and i have to create 'dynamic order lines'That is : you select a product and a quantity, and the amount is calculated.

To visualize: this is on one 'line', so forst product dropdown, next to it the quantity textbox and next to that the amount label.

Then you click 'add another product', and another 'line' is added with a product dropdown, quantity textbox and amount label.

So you can click add and add and add....

Now i was thinking how to implement that, and i came up with two choises:

'add html client side' and 'add user control server side'

The first looks more fancy of course, but i also have to create some server side code to generate the lines again, when the user says 'go' but after validation i have to warn the user for example the amount was over credit or the quantity was to high. Then i get the 'client side' added html, and i have to reproduce that in my code behind, am i right?

On the other hand (add user control server side), i have to create a new user control on 'and another product' postback, which might look easier in the beginning because it's all strong typed, and the client side (jquery / javascript) isn't?

And one more thing: there is a possibility (they are not sure yet) that this functionality is wrapped within a 'section', with an address box and call it an order. And then: the user can add that 'section' also multiple times, so he can create multiple orders in one page, so i have to create multiple sections for an order, and within that order have the possibility to add another product. It looks like it will be hard to do this client side, especially with generating id's?

C# - Content Page Dynamic Content Comes Out At The Top Of The HTML Output

Feb 25, 2011

I'm very new to ASP.net. I have a c# content page, in which I want to inset this code half way down within the HTML:

<%
HttpResponse r = Response;
r.Write(HttpContext.Current.Request.ServerVariables["SERVER_NAME"]);
%>

But when I view the page, this content comes out first, before even the tag.

how to get this code inline instead?

Architecture :: Design An Application To Fetch Data From Different Application Databases

Nov 10, 2010

I need to develop an application, which will get records (orders) from one application and process them. The updates to this records (order updates) will be sent back to the source application for end customer reference. I'm planning to achieve this data synchronization at the database level using triggers and stored procedures to insert database between the 2 databases.

But, the issue is I have to deploy this application in 3 different customer sites and I have to change the database names (cannot use the same database name) in each deployment manually. Because of this deployment issue, I was thinking of handling this within the asp.net application where I can store the db name in the database and then build the query within the application, but I dont want to do it as building queries like that doesnt look very professional.

Web Forms :: Content Pages Disabled In Design View?

Nov 5, 2010

I don't know if this is a basic question or not as I'm brand new to master pages.

I am using VS2010 and an automatically generated asp.net (C#) website. It created the site.master for me which I then edited to give the look for my site.

For some reason I can't drag and drop controls from the toolbox onto each of my content pages. I know I can add them in code but they then don't get added to the designer.cs file and of course if I add them manually they'll get overwritten at the next build.

As I say, I don't know if this is normal behaviour or not but I need to know how to add controls to my automatically generated ContentPlaceHolder with it's associated aspx file with Content tags.

Aspx With Dynamic Base Page Does Not Show Up In Design Tab Of VS?

Jul 30, 2010

I noticed a behaviour in Visual Studio that the design tab for aspx page does not work if I use a dynamic master page using a base page. I dynamically set the master page to implement theming. It shows a master page error and says "The page has controls that require a Master Page reference, but none is specified".

Is there any solution? Or any work around?

I currently set the base/master page to a default master page in the page for myself and work on the page. Once I complete the page, I remove the master page attribute. I wanted to know if some better method is available.

Dynamic Javascript Reference Gives The Message Could Not Open In Design View?

Feb 21, 2011

I've inherited some code (not mine- I swear!) which uses a session variable in the header of the HTML to determine which javascript file to link to.i.e.

<SCRIPT language="javascript" src="../JavaScript/<%=Session("jsFileName")%>.js"></SCRIPT>

It does work, except that it won't let me change to design view. It gives the message

"Could not open in design view. Quote Values differently inside a '<%... "value" ...%>' block."

Anyone got any suggestions as to a workaround, that doesn't involve a huge rewrite.

C# Website Inside Webforms Application?

Aug 24, 2010

We've inherited this ASP.NET website. We've already converted it to a web application for different reasons that doesn't matter right now.

But there are 2 folders with 2 .aspx pages inside that does some really ugly stuff (creates a new aspx file with its corresponding code behind and save it inside one of those folders).

So when the proyect was a simple website, that worked, because the created pages on runtime were compiled at request. This is not applicable to a web application.

We don't have time to re-code those ugly pages and do it as it should. So, is there a way to have those 2 pages (and the generated-at-runtime ones) excluded from the project and inside a website that is compiled at request?

C# - How To Handle NHibernate Sessions In WebForms Application

Jul 16, 2010

I see there are 2 possible scenarios as to the session handling:

Open one single ISession per request. Open it at request start and close it at request end.Open one ISession per conceptual "unit of work". Many sessions are created for a request.

The approach #1 is the one I'm doing now. I'm a little bit worried about it because, although it works, it's a little bit difficult to debug. For instance, I have an object not being saved (even though I ordered it to) and I'm having trouble debugging since there's a LOT of things happening during a complete request life-cycle.

The approach #2 seems to be the standard best-practice (not sure about ASP.NET) and I'm sure it's pretty easier to debug. The problem I see is about inter-session communication. For instance: My Page class holds a reference to the User, which is a persistent object. Many of the operations receive the user as parameter. As the user belongs to a different session, I can't pass it as a parameter.

I'm biased to #2, but I don't know if it's the best practice, nor how to deal with cross-session object.

.net - Best WCF Application Design?

Oct 4, 2010

I am working with a financial application and am looking for the best solution for designing my application.

We have 100's of stored procedures where most/all of our business logic sits. We have WCF web services projects built using Web Service Software Factory (http://servicefactory.codeplex.com/). We have stored procedures built for nearly everything (tables, dropdowns, etc..) and each of these stored procs have their own webservice exposed to be called by the web application. Each web service is a very simple method that calls the stored procedure with the exact paramaters of the web service. I am not too sure if this is the best design and would like to ask for suggestions and alternatives to the design. Does anyone else have a similar environment ? How is it implemented on your end ?

Website - Webforms Physical Site Structure With Dynamic Site Map

Feb 2, 2010

I am having a little difficulty trying to wrap my head around site structures. I have quite a large asp.net site, for which: Admins can see a user list, Each user can have many accounts, and for each account can have many items. I can picture this as a breadcrumb trail of editing a particular item. User List > Mr Bob > Accounts > BOB77 > Items > Item32 > Edit

User List = All the users Mr Bob = A user the administrator has selected from the User List Accounts = A list of the user's accounts 12BOB = The administrator has selected the account named 12BOB Items = A list of the items an account contains Item32 = The item that the administrator selected Edit = The action that the administrator wants to do. I can picture how this would look like if it was using ASP.NET MVC with the URL, but I am unsure how to map this out using Webforms, and in the physical filesystem.

This is what I have thought up about how I am guessing the physical structure would look like. Will this have to use session variables to achieve what I am trying to do?

/Users/User/Edit.aspx <- for editing a user
/Users/User/View.aspx <- for viewing a user
/Users/User/Accounts/Default.aspx <- for viewing all accounts
/Users/User/Accounts/Account/View.aspx <- for viewing an account
/Users/User/Accounts/Account/Edit.aspx <- for editing an account
/Users/User/Accounts/Account/Items/Default.aspx <- for viewing all items in an account
/Users/User/Accounts/Account/Items/Item/Edit.aspx <- for editing an item

Where can I read more about this kind of setup in a web application? Or, can someone point me in the direction of an available project that has this kind of layout?

Design: ORM And Application Layers

Nov 4, 2010

While designing (and then implementing) a layered application:

Is it correct to use the same ORM objects accross all layers? (which would go against encapsulation).

Or the presentation, business and data layer should each have their own objects? (which would lead to lots of code repetition).

e.g. (just to illustrate the question): if one uses Linq to SQL in the Data Layer and Visual Studio's O/R designer to generate the ORM objects, are those objects supposed to be used in the Business and Presentation Layers as well.

i.e.: Are the objects associated with the entities that the application handles a crosscutting issue?

Asp.net - To Prevent A Single User Account Logging On Multiple Times In A Webforms Application

Dec 16, 2010

I am looking at how best to prevent a single user account logging on multiple times in a webforms application. I know that MembershipUser.IsOnline exists, but I've read a few forum and blog entries suggesting that this can be unreliable, particularly in scenarios where a user closes a browser (without logging out) and attempts to logon with a different machine or browser.I looked at implementing a last past the post type system; when a user logs on older users are simply kicked off. It seems that FormsAuthentication.Signout() only works for the current user.

Design Multi-section Application?

Feb 8, 2011

Each user is able to view the sections. There is ton of code to enable/disable section permissions for each user. Is there a better option available in VS 2010? I'm not too familiar with MVC and not sure if it would work in this scenario - each section should be available when the users login.

Application Design - Update Data?

Mar 9, 2010

I've got a web application with 3 layers: front, business and data. I'm using linqToSql for retrieving my data from the db. On the front end, I'd like to show the data that's being pulled from the database. In online examples all code is shown in the same layer. I'm wondering if it's good design to put a reference to the linqtosql classes in my front end so I can bind the results to my gridview, or whether I should use a different way. Since the user should be able to update the data, the easiest thing would be to use the gridview, connect it to the linq2sql datasource and bind it that way, but that would totally defeat my 3-layer structure.
