Detect The Encoding Of An Excel File?
Sep 30, 2010
using vb.net/asp.net 2005
I am opening and reading and I need to detect the encoding of the file that I am reading. There are different system users who will be using different encoding in their files so I have no control over this.
[Code]....
While the default encoding normally works there are special foreign language (non-English) characters that are not being read correctly, instead there are garbage characters in their place that I see "myString" above. Good foreign characters are visible in the file but the result in myString are unreadable garbage characters that are not valid.
I have researched this and it has been suggested to determine the encoding of the file and then use that encoding, but I have not been able to find out how to to do this.
so in a nutshell: how can I use vb.net to detect the encoding of an excel file?

I am using the ReportViewer control in Local mode on a web form in an ASP.NET application, and everything is working well. However, I need some expert with something. My app generates certain reports that cannot be exported to Excel. Therefore I would like to either
(1) preferably NOT display the "Excel" option in the Export dropdown list.
(2) detect when the user clicks the Export linkbutton, and then use code to determine what type of export is being done (Excel, PDF, etc).

I have written a web mailer that can send and receive emails and display them on a webpage.I have a problem displaying special characters though. Like Russian, and Greek and chinese.I am using openpop.net and I can get the encoding of the incoming email as one of my variables.Thing is, how do I display it? Do I set the content encoding of the whole page to what that specific email encoding is?I've got it UTF-8 at the moment and I get garbage.

I'm developing a small ASP.NET Mvc project in Mono 2.4, Ubuntu 10.10. There is an array of objects, each one of them corresponds to a certain xml file. Reading of the xmls is performed with XmlTextReader. That does not work because xml files have rare "cp866nav" encoding, which is not supported by XmlTextReader ("System.ArgumentException: Encoding name 'cp866nav' not supported"). But it works fine if encoding in xml header is changed to "cp866". I found a kind of solution which consists in initializing XmlTextReader with a StreamReader with a certain encoding instead of file name, like in the code below:
XmlTextReader reader = new XmlTextReader(new StreamReader(Server.MapPath(filename), Encoding.GetEncoding("cp866")));
The issue is that the directory which contains xml files is read only (I can not change it), so I get "System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path '' is denied.". Rather strange, because XmlTextReader initialized with a filename seems to read the files. Is there any solution, considering that program cannot modify or create files?

Im pulling out a text field from the database which has and 's in it for line breaks. Which I have left there for pupose of being able to edit the fields later on.
So when i try to display the text I need to replace them which I have done with:
[Code]....
Simple enough. Only when I run the page the source code I get for it is:
<br />
So it seems its not encoding the < as a encode but into the form <
Does anyone know how to stop this happen. Or a method around it?

I've been thrown into the middle of this project without knowing all the background. If you've got WTF questions, trust me, I have them too.
Here is the scenario: I've got a bunch of files residing on an IIS server. They have no file extension on them. Just naked files with names like "asda-2342-sd3rs-asd24-ut57" and so on. Nothing intuitive.
The problem is I need to serve up files on an ASP.NET (2.0) page and display the tiff files as tiff and the PDF files as PDF. Unfortunately I don't know which is which and I need to be able to display them appropriately in their respective formats.
For example, lets say that there are 2 files I need to display, one is tiff and one is PDF. The page should show up with a tiff image, and perhaps a link that would open up the PDF in a new tab/window.
The problem:
As these files are all extension-less I had to force IIS to just serve everything up as TIFF. But if I do this, the PDF files won't display. I could change IIS to force the MIME type to be PDF for unknown file extensions but I'd have the reverse problem.

Is this problem easier than I think or is it as nasty as I am expecting?

I'm developing a website that has modular section. I would like it that when a new aspx (and aspx.cs) file is placed in a subdirectory of the application that I can ask the class some information...The idea is that when the file is placed in the directory a new menu item is added to the menu. To do that I need to "ask the class" for its name, icon, description, etc. Is there a way to determine the class that is defined in codebehind file and to instantiate an instance of it?I know I could look for and parse a config file for each plugin but I would rather not have to go that route.

when I used a code of exporting gridview into excel this code worked for a new website which is without masterpage.
my code:
public override void VerifyRenderingInServerForm(Control control) { }
protected void BtnGenerateReport_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
Response.Clear();
Response.Buffer = true;
Response.AddHeader("content-disposition",
"attachment;filename=GridViewExport.xls");
Response.Charset = "";
Response.ContentType = "application/vnd.ms-excel";
StringWriter sw = new StringWriter();.....
Now the same code when I copy it in my project having masterpage . there is no compiler error but it is genereating excel file withno data in it but in fact there is data in the grid view at runtime.

I need to remove the password protection from an uploaded excel file. I have been doing this directly with the Excel assemblies (ASP.NET/C#) and then I tried with the ooxmlcrypto, both worked, but the problem is that I can not deploy either of those solution because of the dependencies.
I mean, my sysadmin does not want us installing Excel on the server and, as I have been searching for some alternatives, I can not find one.
My question is: is there a way to put the necessary dlls in the server without installing Excel or the Office suite?
I found this: Office 2007 Primary Interop Assemblies redistributable package but still, it requires a Microsoft Office Product.

My question is similar to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/194579/how-to-detect-when-a-user-has-successfully-finished-downloading-a-file-in-php but I have to do the same using IIS, ASP.NET and C#.
None of the methods in the HttpResponse class provide feedback if the data was sent or not, TransmitFile just does its job (or not) and does not provide any means of knowing the result.I was thinking of using the .Filter property but then again, the filter is based on the HttpResponseStream which does also not provide any feedback.

I'm trying to let the user download different documents where the data is stored in an SQL DB. In firefox, the filetype is correctly read, but not in IE. I'm trying to do this without having to set the ".pdf" or whatever extension the document has, because I haven't got that information. I only have the filetype.

My users like to upload password-protected Word documents into our custom document management system. I'd like to add a validation to check for the password and refuse the upload if it has a password.
Automating Word - with COM interop - is out of the question because this is a server side application.

I embed wmp, swf, and qt in a modalpopupextender. Some of the video files take a long time to load so a given player's window stays empty for too long. I think I should be able to have the player hidden initially and display an animated gif in the modalpopupextender and then when the video files completes loading I'd hide the gif and show the player (or simply manipulate the corresponding z-indexes).

I am using asp.net oledb to export information to excel file. I encounter problems when the information to export becomes too big, in this case the code I have given below, the excel file generated becomes an empty spreadsheet. If I changed the loop to 1123 for insertion of the rows. The generated excel file is fine, 1125 rows, and 4 columns shown. A test program in windows form is also working fine regardless of how many rows.
Code has been simplified, "information ..." in the sql insertion command represents 1803 characters.
ExcelObjConn = "Provider=Microsoft.Ace.OLEDB.12.0;" & _
"Data Source=" & fileName & ";Extended Properties=Excel 12.0 XML"
ExcelConnection = New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection(ExcelObjConn)
ExcelConnection.Open()
Try
SqlCommand = "CREATE TABLE ABC ([row1] text, [row2] text, [row3] text, [row4] text)"
ExcelCommand = New OleDb.OleDbCommand(SqlCommand, ExcelConnection)
ExcelCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
ExcelCommand.Dispose()
For i As Integer = 0 To 1124
SqlCommand = "Insert into ABC ([row1], [row2], [row3], [row4]) Values ('information...', 'information ...', 'information ...', 'information ...')"
ExcelCommand = New OleDb.OleDbCommand(SqlCommand, ExcelConnection)
ExcelCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
ExcelCommand.Dispose()
Next
Catch ex As Exception
Finally
If ExcelConnection IsNot Nothing Then
ExcelConnection.Close()
ExcelConnection.Dispose()
End If
End Try
I couldn't find a solution to my problem as well. What I did eventually was to run the process using another separate windows service. The code works perfectly fine running from a windows form or service program, but not asp.net, not sure why.

I have created an excel sheet from datatable using function. I want to read the excel sheet programatically using the below connectionstring. This string works fine for all other excel sheets but not for the one i created using the function. I guess it is because of excel version problem.
OleDbConnection conn= new OleDbConnection("Data Source='" + path +"';provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Extended Properties=Excel 8.0;";);
which i can create an excel sheet such that it is readable again using above query. I cannot use Microsoft InterOp library as it is not supported by my host. I have even changed different encoding formats. Still it doesnt work
