Dll - How To Slow The First Time After Building A Class Library

Jun 10, 2010

I've got a web app solution containing a class library project.

Whenever I rebuild the class library and then refresh the page, it takes ages the first time, and is then quick again subsequently.

It's almost as if the newly rebuilt dll is having to 'bed in' to the app.

Configuration :: Slow Load Time After Updating Class In App_Code?

Dec 20, 2010

We have an asp.net website running on IIS 6 Windows 2003. When ever we upload a class file to the App_Code folder our whole site goes down temporarily until, what I assume, compilation is complete. Has anyone else experienced this? Any other file we upload it does not do this only our class files.

Building COM Interop Library Using 4.0 Framework / VS2010?

Feb 7, 2011

A client of mine is only proficient in development for ASP Classic. They have recently acquired an account for a site originally written in ASP.NET. They are rolling the site into something they can actively maintain, but the site originally included an image handler that took dynamically changing data regarding water levels and outputs an image containing a graphical representation of that data. The requirement is to develop a COM interop library that can be registered on the server and called with CreateObject to generate the same image's byte array for output using Response.BinaryWrite. The COM interop library must be registered at the remote site on a Windows 2000 Server, and I can't make any assumptions about their having access to regasm/gacutil to accomplish that task.

The Difficulty

I've built the class library by creating a Class Library project in Visual Studio 2010, choosing "COM Class" from the template, and inserting my code to generate a class with a single public method to return a byte array when given an integer (well, enumerator, but all the same). Unfortunately, even on my own development machine after building the library and registering (regasm) and caching the assembly (gacutil), I can't make a call through Classic ASP to instantiate the object, receiving instead an "ActiveX component can't create object" error. And, of course, at the server site, the DLL can't be registered, the response being "Required module was not found."

Resources I've Used

I've already had a look through the following articles and haven't turned up the answers I need:

(basic steps) Walkthrough: Creating COM Objects with Visual Basic Build and Deploy a .NET COM Assembly .NET COM+ Interop Component with Classic ASP

What I Need

Essentially what I need is a bit of hand-holding on a kind of step by step of what it's going to take to meet the requirements and create a COM+ interop module correctly in VS2010. Creating the actual class object itself isn't terribly difficult. However, none of the articles I've looked through really discuss project options or build procedures with VS2010 or the .NET 4.0 Framework, nor have any of them really discussed if there are special considerations for deploying to older systems like Windows Server 2000 and the actual registration of the library on a system with only, say, regsvr32 on hand. Unfortunately, most of the information I find centers on ASP.NET 2.0 and supporting older applications while still in the middle of transitioning from ASP Classic to the new technology.

Web Forms :: Way To Control Null When Inheriting From Class Library Class

Sep 16, 2010

I have this Control directive in a usercontrol (i've changed the namespace and class name):

<%@ Control Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" Inherits="Namespace.Path.To.ClassName" %>
<asp:TextBox runat="server" ID="txtComment" TextMode="MultiLine" ValidationGroup="comment" />
ClassName is a class that lives in a class library and this is the class:
namespace Namespace.Path.To
{
public class ClassName : System.Web.UI.UserControl
{
protected System.Web.UI.WebControls.TextBox txtComment;
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
HttpContext.Current.Response.Write(txtComment == null);
HttpContext.Current.Response.End();

C# - How To Inherit A Page Class From A Class Library

Mar 16, 2011

I might be asking a dumb question, but I have a client for whom I need to build many websites (10+) (asp.net 3.5) which will all the pages on each site will have the same codebehind, but the sites will launching in different regions and whilst following the same template, will have different content.I have built and launched site 1, and sites 2, 3 & 4 is nearly live, but it occurs to me that as all the sites are basically the same, the code is going to get more complicated to update as it will be duplicated, so if I need to do a bug fix on one site, I'll need to do the fix on all websites (and this is going to get complicated.)

I was wondering if it possible to somehow create a class library of all the current aspx.cs files, reference this dll in each website and then inherit these classes into the .aspx.cs files. So default.aspx in each site would still have a CodeFile of "Default.aspx.cs", but Default.aspx.cs would inherit the corresponing class from the dll:

using WebPagesClass;
public partial class _Default : WebPagesClass._Default
{ }

The reason for doing it like this is that if I need to change any code on a specific website (for minor changes in languages for instance), I can override the page functions and change the parts required. For all other pages which have not cha, I can just copy from a single website.Is this vaguely possible? If not anyone one got any killer suggestions of how to manage so many websites from a single codebase?

Building And Using A Utility Class For Forum?

Jan 6, 2011

I think this may be a question for the architecture forum, but it feels a bit newb to me, so here goes.

I'm trying to write a utility class to use throughout my C# ASP.NET websites. I am having trouble getting intellisense to see the methods in my class. What I'm doing is creating a static class and putting it in a namesapce and with a using directive, importing that class into the code-behind of my web form. But it's not working. I would also like to minimize the visibility of the code i.e. use the least accessible access modifier necessary for use in my util class.

Ways To Reduce Application Building/debugging Time?

Oct 2, 2010

My new office project is based on an MVP design and is in VB.NET (.NET 3.5), using multiple libraries (like EntLib, internal corporate framework, etc.). The number of DLLs used as references is so huge (almost 50) that when I try to build/debug the application in VS2008, it takes almost 3-4 minutes to get the website running successfully.Wanted to know if there are any settings/areas which upon some modifications can help me reduce the build time? and what exactly can be the major reasons behind this long loading duration?

C# - Comments Slow Down The Execution Time Of Webpages?

Nov 5, 2010

This might be a pretty strange question in the eyes of some of you out here, but I really wonder if comments in my code will slow down the execution time of the pages I make.I have some Classes / WebControls that required alot of comments to make everything clear and quickly readable to other people that will have to deal with my code and now wonder how ASP.Net deals with my comments. Will comments be stripped from my code at compile time or how is this all done?I should be more specific: I mean comments in my code-behind in C#.

Class Library Can't Be Found?

Apr 19, 2010

I have a web Application and have created a seperate class library project.I am trying to use the Class Library by referencing it in the Web Application. I am doing this by right clicking the web application and clicking 'Add Reference...'. I then browse to my Class library and click ok. This gets added to a Bin folder in my web application.The problem is I can't actually get any of the objects that are in the Clas Library. I have tried adding a using statement to the top of the page. It tells me that the object could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

C# - Telerik RadAjaxManager Loads Controls Slow The First Time?

Mar 15, 2011

So I have a RadPanelBar, and within that a RadTreeView. On a node click event I want so update some control.. for now I am just trying to update a textbox. It works fine except that the first time I click on a child node it takes a very long time to update the control.. Just a simple text change. I set a break point in my function and I noticed that it is taking long to fire the OnNodeClick event.. If I click a parent node in the tree view it loads fine on the first click. Also, after the first time I've clicked it.. it loads quickly.. If I refresh the page, it is slow on the first click again.. Is there something I am missing.. Is the structure of my HTML inappropriate for these AJAX calls? I feel like this is a really simple example that should work..

<asp:Content ID="BodyContent" runat="server" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainContent">
<telerik:RadAjaxManagerProxy ID="RadAjaxManagerProxy1" runat="server">
<AjaxSettings>
<telerik:AjaxSetting AjaxControlID="IncidentReportPanel">

[Code]....

EDIT: I updated my code according to this article, [URL] , and the problem persisted... again it only happens the first time..

EDIT: Just to clarify, by updating according to that article, I mean that I removed all the tables and relative widths and replaced them with css positioning and fixed widths.. the problem only happens the first time.. and it only happens sometimes.. quite a few times i thought i solved the problem as it would start responding quickly.. but then after I change my .aspx and change it back (even to the exact same thing when it was working quickly).. I get the same problem..

EDIT: So, I removed the AJAX component.. and setup the control so that it does a PostBack.. and it still takes long to hit my break point.. so it seems that its not an AJAX issue... but for some reason my events are taking long to fire..

EDIT: So I followed the advice on this post and I used the webservices to do my binding and handle everything from the client side code.. All seemed to be ok until I decided that I wanted to return nodes from my webservice that could also be expanded.. So in my webservice I set the ExpandMode of my RadTreeNodeData object to Webservice.. and it renders the data correctly when I expand the child nodes.. However now I see the same problem from before where some calls take 20-30 seconds.. It takes 20-30 seconds to even hit the break point in my webservice.. Should I use the OnClientNodeExpand event instead?

C# - Consume Web Service In App From A Class Library?

Feb 16, 2011

My team and I have a asp.net web forms application and are using several class libraries. In one of those libraries, we are trying to consume a web service. The web reference was added in the web app project and the appropriate references have been added. The app compiles. When attempting to consume said web service in the class library, the credentials don't seem to work, and the call fails. However, if we take the web service call out of the class library, and consume it within the web app, it works.
