Dynamically Layout User Controls On A Page?
Feb 25, 2010
I am working on a page where user controls are dynamically added to the page and refreshed with a timer in an updatepanel.
Since I already coded dynamic user control loading into the page, I would also like to implement *some* form of dynamic layout method for those controls. I was thinking coordinate values.
I have used Top and Left properties on panels before to achieve this functionality in my windows forms applications but since this is a web application things are different.
I realize I can do the whole "absolute positioning layout model" override in Visual Studio but as far as I know this only benefits me at design time. Is there a way to programatically trigger that behavior?
I looked at the silverlight Canvas and how you can pass offset values in with your controls. Something like that would be great, but this isn't Silverlight, lol. I also considered a web method to return globs of html tags to fill the area between these controls.
This is a page that would be reused over and over from client to client so this is why I would like to get this dynamic layout working. It would save me much effort later on.

I've a page main.aspx. This page has a button 'Settings'. When it is clicked, I load another aspx page settigns.aspx in a popup. Now in the settings.aspx i allow the users to add controls dynamically. For example the user can create 5 textboxes. When he saves it there, I need to get that controls to main.aspx.
So i need to move all the controls from one page to another page. I'm not able to think of a solution with user controls.

I have a page that has customer information. I have a requirement to be able to add multiple points of contacts to a contact, so I want to dynamically be able to add a block of label/text boxes with a save/delete button attached like so for each PoC:
How best to do this? I could put a div on the page with a runat="server" and add controls I guess? Not really sure how I lay them out that way correctly though.

Ihave the following code and would like to be able to control the layout of the textboxes and labels so they arent just in a long column. Right now everything works and controls are added, but they are added in 1 column which if you chose 32 from the dropdown the page becomes very long.. so would like to maybe wrap them across 3 columns so that each has at least 10 per column.

I'm adding a serires of asp:literal and asp:textbox controls to a panel in code as below (the eventual aim being to add only some of the controls depending on the user):

How can I control how the panel is rendered, preferably without having to create a custom control?

It's simple to create both user control from the two world : ASP.NET+Razor or MVC 3.0.But i do not known how to consume the user control FROM the razor"_layout.chtml" page.I want to put such thing within the layout page: <uc:MyTag Prop1="" Prop2="" />So i need to declare this directive at top of the layout file : <%@ Register TagPrefix="uc" TagName="MyTag" Src="Controls/Mytag.ascx" %>

I am using ASP.Net 2.0 with Ajax.
I am working on a pretty heavy page in an application and the scenario is:
There is a Tab control in the page, having four tabs. These tabs individually consist of different user controls and other asp controls. Most of these usercontrols in turn consist of other user controls. Every user control contains huge javaScript functions which validate them, populate controls and call web services.
What I am trying to achieve is to load only the Tab and its user controls on the page load and when the user clicks on a specific tab, load its contents (User controls) dynamically. Once that is done, I am setting the tab's postback to false to prevent loading it again once loaded.
I tried to achieve this by making the user controls in the other tabs - visible="false" in the markup and loading them from server side on some specific event. But that causes the javaScript functions in those user controls to give errors ('Object expected') when I go to that tab.
If I set the user controls in the other tabs to visible true, then no matter what; the page life cycle goes to each registered control and loads every subsequent control in that web user control which makes the main page slow (on loading and every postback).
The position of the Tab and the inner user controls is fixed. Although I am taking care that no data is populated unnecessarily on the page and user controls on hidden tabs, I dont want the tabs to get loaded altogether unless requested. If I load them on runtime, their corresponding javaScripts start giving errors.. note that I am not generating the controls on runtime, they exist in the page design. I just dont want to load them dynamically

I'm developing an ASP.NET application with C# and Ajax.I have a page that holds user controls loaded dynamically. I need to pass some data (integer values and some strings) to the user control that has been loaded dynamically.Now I use Session to pass these values, but I think I can use another way; something like VIEWSTATE or hidden input.What do you recommend me?The fact that I load the controls dynamically is important because controls are loaded on every postback, and I can't store any value on controls.

I am learning ASP .net (I have several years experience designing windows applications). When I add controls to a new blank web page, I do not seem to be able to control where on the page these controls sit. They default to being jammed up against one another from left to right in the top left corner. Am I missing something? Is something not working? If this is by design, what is the basic method for controlling how controls sit on the web page?

I have a user control which contains a number of child controls. I want to be able to change the layout of the control (i.e. change the markup surrounding the child controls) via a property of the user control, but I don't want to have to duplicate the child controls themselves. This precludes using, say, a MultiView with different versions of the layout in each view, since in that case I'd have to duplicate the controls. I'd also rather use markup than emit the code for the control directly (as you'd do in a server control).
To give a contrived example, say I have a label and a textbox. In one layout, I want the label and textbox to be contained by divs and laid out on top of each other. In an alternate layout, I want them to be contained side by side in a table.
Should I just go ahead and duplicate the controls between each view? It seems like a violation of the DRY principle, but I'm not sure if I have much choice. A partial solution would be making the views of a multiview into naming containers so that I could at least save myself the time of having to prefix the duplicate control IDs with something to make them unique.

I have a custom CRM package and I need to allow specific users have different layouts on selected screens. I do not want to support multiple software packages so I am thinking that I have some type of interface that allows a user to select what fields they want to input on a given screen. However, what is the easiest way to make this happen? I am thinking that I have some type of XML file that is read that a user can define.

I have tried to look for examples...everything I found was not making sense..poor explained and the codes where all in C#..so when converting it the examples dont even work..

I have a usercontrol (ascx) that I want to dynamically add to a page.
Neither the control nor the page has a namespace (thanks crappy vendor).
When I use the following, it tells me it cant find the "type or namespace"
StayTunedControl = (UserControler_StayTuned)LoadControl("~/UserControler/StayTuned.ascx");
Page.Controls.Add(StayTunedControl);
StayTunedControl.StayTunedID = Convert.ToInt32(IncludesStayTunedMeta.Value);
After some tweaking to the namespaces, etc, I am now at a point where the 3rd line above generates the following error:
'System.Web.UI.UserControl' does not contain a definition for 'StayTunedID'
I was hoping that casting StayTunedControl as type (UserControler_StayTuned) would fix this.

Hosting page:
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
LoadMyControl(Parameters); //Do it every page load to preserve it's state
}
protected void LoadMyControl(string parameters)
{
plchld.Controls.Clear();
Control userControl = LoadControl("TheUserControl.ascx");
userControl.ID = "userControl1";
plchld.Controls.Add(userControl);
}
Now inside this control, when a button is clicked I want to update ,let's say a Label on the hosting page.
What is the best way to do it? Custom event?

I have user control that inherits a base control class and these user controls are loaded using the LoadControl method, I can't seem to figure out how to raise events from user controls to the page that are dynamically loaded this way. Here is the delegate and event in the base user control class.
public delegate void SomeChangeEventHandler(object sender
, SomeChangeEventArgs e);
public event SomeChangeEventHandler SomeChangeEvent;
public virtual void OnSomeChanged(SomeChangeEventArgs e)
{
if (SomeChangeEvent != null)
{
SomeChangeEvent(this, e);
}
}

I have a user control that contains an image of a product along with some product details.
If the product image is landscape, I want to render the control one way, and if the product image is portrait, I want to render the control a second way.
Example HTML Layouts (drastically simplified):
<div><table><tr><td>
<p><strong>XXXXXX</strong></p>
</td></tr><table></div>
versus
<div><table><tr><td>
<p><em>XXXXXX</em></p>
</td></tr><table></div>
Right now, both layouts are rendered. How can I conditionally render one layout and not the other?

I have a user control I'm building that has a table layout with two sets of radio buttons, like:
how I could use a radiobuttonlist for each set of vertical buttons within this layout, unless I used a rowspan on each col, but that seems problematic from a layout perspective? I would rather use a RBL from a programming standpoint.
If I instead used a set of radiobuttons with a groupname for each, how do I get/set the selected button (for each set) from outside the UC?

I want to create a web page with a table on top and a scrollable panel. Similar layout to yahoo mail inbox page (list of inbox messages on top and the panel displaying details). Further more, the table displays general information list and the panel displays a list of detail records. when a user clicks a table row, the panel is going to jump to the specific detail row, similar to html anchors. Do you know how to implement this?

I am new to ASP.NET development and I am running into an issue using master/content pages. I have a master file that basically defines all of the layout for my site. The only thing that the content pages are supposed to display is some very basic text/images/html, made available by one ContentPlaceHolder control in the master file.
My problem is in the display. When I view the content page, none of the layout that should be inherited from the master page is displayed -- I end up with just a 'blank' page. What seems odd, is that if I look at the Design View in VS 2005, the content page appears to show the layout that is defined in the master. Here is a sample of the source for the master and one of the content pages...
Master Page: content_pages.master
<%@ Master Language="VB" CodeFile="content_pages.master.vb" Inherits="content_pages" %>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
