Feed The Language Culture Thread Into The Helper Class?
Feb 3, 2010
With asp.net MVC 2, I have been trying to get Matt Hawley's Localization helper to work in my web application, but I am getting stuck feeding a null into the Language string variable. I can't figure out why I am doing this.
namespace MvcLocalization
{
public abstract class LocalizedControllerBase : Controller
{
public String LanguageCode { get; private set; }
protected override void Initialize(System.Web.Routing.RequestContext requestContext)
{
LanguageCode = requestContext.RouteData.Values["languageCode"].ToString();
if ( !AppConfig.SupportedLanguages.Contains(LanguageCode) )
LanguageCode = AppConfig.DefaultLanguageCode;
System.Globalization.CultureInfo culture = System.Globalization.CultureInfo.CreateSpecificCulture(LanguageCode);
Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture = culture;
Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture = culture;
base.Execute(requestContext);
}
}
}

what is the result of setting the current thread's culture code?
I understand if I use the resource file it will pull label's/strings from the .resx file.
What else? Will it effect my date/money formatting also?

I am using MVC 3 with a few Resource Files. I made the resource files Public.
I am able to the localized values in the Views and in the Controllers.
They change correctly when the Thread Culture changes.
But in my Model Validation Classes the Resource strings I get are always the same.
They do not change when I change the Thread Culture.
I am on this for 2 days and not able to find the problem.

When I was localizing my web application I got one strange doubt.
In the first request i set current thread's current culture to user chosen culture. It worked fine for that particular request. But when i browsed for other page, server rendered content in default english culture. I think the reason meight be "http is stateless" means current request is served by a thread whose culture was set properly. Send request will be serverd another thread which does not about previous thread. So we should once again assign culture to this thread. Localization can be done by setting culture to a session variable.
So my question is what is the benifit that we get by setting culture to current thread. With setting to thread we can show the page in user desired language.

I'm using the following msdn article to use different languages in my web application:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/fw69ke6f(v=VS.80).aspx
I'm following the instructions step by step in VS 2010, and it creates the resource files exactly how it's supposed to. However, when I run the program it just doesn't apply it. I don't see the different values from the resource file.
If I leave my resource file name as sample.aspx.resx, it works. But when I change it to sample.aspx.en-us.resx, it doesn't work. I'm supplying culture from the aspx page's Culter and UICulture properties. I'm being very careful in choosing the correct file name, as that could be the issue, but it just doesn't work. I also tried changing the culture in the backend code this way:
Protected
Overrides
Sub InitializeCulture() [code]....
It still doesn't work.

Given a CultureInfo object or language tag (e.g. "en-US") string, is there a function that will give me the default DateTime string format (e.g. "mm/dd/yyyy") for that specific culture/language?

I have a class instance which is created by using Activator.CreateInstance() method. That class instance contains helper methods which are frequently used throughout the application. In order to avoid creating the instance multiple times, I'm just thinking about implementing an appropriate caching mechanism. The following consideration should be taken into account:
1) I can't use static class and methods.
2) There are around 6 instances (1 instance per class) per App Domain.

When is it appropriate to create a helper class for a sql server database using the asp.net framework? Basically I'm trying to create a minature wiki (with multiple pages) and storing all of the data/strings for a specific page into a table on it's own.

I need to use the standard ASP.NET membership database tables in plain winform projects, and I DO NOT WANT to add the ASP.NET dll, because my app must run with .NET Client framework, and not full framework. Does somebody knows of a helper class that links to ASP.NET tables in plain vanilla VB ot c# code? I mean with functions equivalent to CreateNewUser, CheckUserCredentials, isUserinRole, RoleList etc...

I have just added routing in a new asp.net 4 web forms application, and have got my route table set up ok and page requests are working fine. What I now want to do is use the Page.GetRouteUrl method whenever I need to generate one of my seo friendly Url's. I started to implement this across various pages then thought it might cut down on code a bit if I had a method in one of my own helper classes, that constructs this url (using the Page.GetRouteUrl method) as I might have several parameters that need to be specified against the Page.GetRouteUrl method each time.
However, within my helper class, it doesn't know what 'Page' is. I was thinking I could pass in 'Page' from the page that wants a routed url to be generated, but in some cases I want to construct one of these Url's in another class which doesn't know what 'Page' is, and in that scenario wouldn't be able to pass it in as a param (and therefore wouldn't be able to use the Page.GetRouteUrl within my helper class). What is the normal approach when wanting to use Page.GetRouteUrl within classes that don't have an instance of the Page object?

I'm working on a page with two sets of collapsable panels. using nHibernate) I get category objects with a list of items in them, and for each category generate a left panel and right panel. In both panels, there is a ListBox. Items are pre-populated to the left list box and the user can select and move items into the right list box (under the corresponding category.) As I've built and worked on it, I ended up with a lot of generic methods like buildPanel(side,categoryID) and then ended up with a lot of repeated if statements inside them to differentiate between the two sides
if type=PanelType.Left then
set these 5 id strings to access components
else
...
The code got messy, so I moved a lot of the logic and static builder strings for the component ids into a private helper class in order to make other parts of the main class easier to read and follow. The problem I see is that the private class is extremely dependant on specific structures in the parent class. There's a very minimal amount of encapsulation going on and I'm possibly making the logic harder to follow even if the individual components in the code are easier to read.
My question is: When you're using a private class like this, is it acceptable to have it tightly integrated with the parent class (since it's private and implemented in the same file), am I better to refactor again and find a way of either simplifying my original code to be as short as possible without the helper class (stick all category/panel functions in one spot and hide them in their own region when I'm not using them), or should I move towards putting more of the logic in the helper class and simply mapping my events directly to the subclass. After typing all this out, I'm leaning towards the last option, but I'm still torn/confused about the whole thing...

Is there a way to pass a reference of a page to a helper class? Scenario: [ASP.NET 2.0 Web Application] The page is a content page which has a MasterPage. The page calls a method in the helper class and passes the page byRef as an argument. The method in the helper class tries to find a control on the passed in page and set values. Problem: Only the MasterPage is being exposed and not the page I am trying to pass. Any recommendations on passing the page so that I can set the values of the controls within it?

I am using jQuery to call PageMethods. For certain operations, the current user credentials must be validated and for other operations, I need to call other static methods. Here is some sample code:
Sample #1
[WebMethod]
public static void PostComment(string comment)
{
UserAuth auth = new UserAuth();
if (auth.isAuthenticated)
{
//Post comment here...
}
}
Sample #2
[WebMethod]
public static string GetComment(int commentId)
{
commentDto comment = //get comment data from the database...
string friendlyDate = ConvertFriendlyDate(comment.commentDate);
return friendlyDate + " " + comment.text;
}
public static string ConvertFriendlyDate(DateTime commentDate)
{
string friendlyDate = //call static utility method to convert date to friendly format
return friendlyDate;
}
Will I be safe using these kinds of operations? Am I better to drop page methods and just call a separate ASPX page for my AJAX requests?

I'm having problems drawing the lines on what code goes where in the following case. What goes in the View, Controller and Model. It should be noted that this is my first MVC project.So I'm building a bilingual site where the user may select either English or Norwegian language. I want the user to be able to choose language with a link at the top of the page. The link for the selected language at any time is emphasized with a certain CSS class.
The user setting with the selected language at any time is stored in a cookie at the client. When a request is done, the cookie is parsed and the settings are objectified as a part of the Model the way I've implemented it as of now (please object if you find this weird, but this is not the main focus of this post). I.e. a super-class which all my models inherit from, has the UserSettings class with the Language property.Now, where do I write the code which translates the language property into a CSS class?Option A, the View: I envision some code which interprets the language and output one of two possible lines of code based on this. We'll have IF's in the View.
Option B, the Controller: Logic in the Action method sets a ViewData-property with the name of the CSS class for both the link to the Norwegian and the English language.
Option C, the Model: I create a new property in the Model doing the same thing as the code in Option B. Except now I get strongly-typed parameters in the View and intellisense. (But I do suspect you guys will not like this solution for separation-of-concerns-reasons)
Option D, the ViewModel* I create a new class which is a ViewModel for the Model with the same property as in Option C. Now I get better separation of concerns.Yes I know there's no ViewModel in MVC, but I also know some people implement it anyway.
So what do you say? A,B,C or D? Or maybe you've got an E?
