View 1 RepliesI am facing an amazing problem in ASP.NET. I have a website with many sub directories. The sub directories have aspx and aspx.cs files but do not contain web.config files. I am using the web.config file of the parent directory for storing config items for the respective code files in sub directories. But when i m trying to read the web.config using ConfigurationManager.AppSettings[] with absolutely the correct keys, there's no value being returned. Most amazing fact is, this same code works fine in dev enviroment but not in staging.

Currently, I work on an ASP.NET project which is hosted under version control and is used on several developer machines, tester machine and production environment.
In three cases, configuration (Web.config) may be different. For example, developer and tester environments use testing SQL Server, whereas in production environment, another SQL Server is accessed, so the connection string is different in those cases.
We want to keep three versions of Web.config in subversion. But modifying each of three files every time we need to add, remove or change a common setting is annoying: it would be nice to have a common, master Web.config, which will be inherited by each of the three Web.config files.
How to set up an ASP.NET project which will use a master configuration file and different slave configuration files on different machines, thus sharing the same project/source code/configuration files in subversion?
We are experiencing some strange behaviour on one of our ASP.NET web servers (Windows 2003 64-bit). After some activity, two third-party controls are unable to run correctly. One is log4net (it does not write error messages out) and the other is a menu control (it displays eval message instead of picking up its license). The one common thread is that both controls pick up their config from external config files (linked to from web.config).
Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this or experienced this in any way. Is it related to file/folder rights? The server has been running fine for a while and just started exhibiting this behaviour. Perhaps it occurs around the time the worker processes are recycled.

Following the first site, it had worked but when I´ve moved the pages and files to other folders and set the web.config file on this folder, now it won´t work at all!!!
The file is an *.swf object. I did put the asapi.dll to map the extension on the website root, I´ve put the
[Code]....
on the web.config new folder and on the web.config website´s root.
It won´t work!!! I can access the file directly!!! on the web.config of the folder that contains the file, there is a <deny users="*" /> line.
I just upgraded to VS 2010 and MVC 2.0 and I noticed the web.config has two additional files attached to it? Are these files used to specify debug and release specific settings, so you don't clutter up the main web.config?
Does it even make sense to place a connection string in the root web.config file if I have have a local and remote one in the debug and release web.configs respectively.
whats a good way to be able to keep 2 connection strings to SQL server in the web .comfig and have the app pick the correct one when its in the prod and dev servers?
i think i saw once some cool ways to keep variables like app settings holding two sets of values just like i am trying to do with my connection string to SQL... but i diont remmeber where i saw it..

I have an ASP.Net web site (ASPX and ASMX pages) with a single web.config file. We have a development version and a production version. Over time, the web.config files for development and production have diverged substantially. What is the best practice for keeping both versions of web.config in source control (we use Tortoise SVN but I don't think that matters)?
It seems like I could add the production web.config file with a name like "web.config.prod", and then when we turnover all the files we would just add the step of deleting the existing web.config and renaming web.config.prod to web.config. This seems hackish, although I'm sure it would work. Is there not some mechanism for dealing with this built in to Visual Studio? It seems like this would be a common issue, but I haven't found any questions (with answers) about this.
I am having an issue with caching of a web application while deployment to a webserver. the application require full trust level to be assigned but i am having partial trust level. How can i handle it. I am using Microsoft enterprise lib caching. site is displaying an error if FullTrust used nad for medium code doesn't work.

Do anyone of you know how to handle XXX.X IIS HTTP errors in a web.config file? I tried doing the following:

I am workin on a web projects which has arround 25000 xml files. Some where in application we need to compare some part of a xml file with all 25000 xml files. Although it is working but takin arround 25 minutes to compare. how can i reduce this time and can compare files in less time.

I managed to use the rehosted WF designer and create images on-the-fly on the server, but imagining how large the workflow diagrams can very quickly become, I wanted to give a better user experience by using some ajax control for displaying images that would support zoom & pan functionality.
I happened to come across the website of seadragon, which seems to be just an amazing piece of work that I could use. There is just one disadvantage - in order to use their library for generating deep zoom versions of images I have to use the file structure on a server. Because of the temporary nature of the images I am using (workflow diagrams with progress indicators), it is important to not only be able to create such images but also to get rid of them after some time.
Now the question is how can I best ensure that the temporary image files and the folder hierarchy can be created on a server (ASP.NET web app), and later cleaned up. I was thinking of using the cache functionality and by the expiration of the cache item delete the corresponding image folder hierarchy, or simply in the Application_Start and Application_End of Global.asax delete the content of the whole temporary folder, but I'm not really sure whether this is a good idea and whether there are some security restrictions or file-system-related troubles. What do you think ?
I'm testing a very simple aspx page on Visual Studio's own ASP.NET Development Server(the local server). On the webpage there is a FileUpload control which can upload jpg file up to 2MB without problems. On uploading bigger files, the browser immidiately show "The web page cannot be displayed". It does not show any exception which really puzzles me. "The web page cannot be displayed" is normally caused by network problem, but in this case it's a local server and it can handle smaller jpg file fine. Whta's the problem here?

View 2 RepliesI am using PageMethods to send a few parameters to a webmethod in my codebehind. The method runs a stored procedure and uses the results to build a string that I am returning from the method.
Everything works fine until I try to include too many records in my results..
Once the results I am trying to return hit about 70K, the pagemethod times out even though it is taking about 1 second to process the results.
Is there a buffer limit or limit on the size or results returned from a pagemethod and if so, where can this be set or changed?
Is there a setting in the web.config somewhere to handle pagemethod buffer size?
I have two webconfig files, on in the root directory and one in the other directory. I dont know how to access or specify for the particular pages or APIs those are in the folder.Root webconfig file used by another section and the 2nd one accessed by another api. I have no idea about that

View 2 RepliesI am currently trying to publish a web application in TestRelease mode and when I do, the following dll is compiled and put into the bin folder.Microsoft.VisualStudio.Settings.dll.I do not get this dll when I comple in release or debug mode so wondered if there is a setting I can change so this dll does not appear in the bin folder when I compile in TestRelease or TestDebug mode ?When I get that dll in the bin folder and try to deploy the application to our test server, I receive the following message: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.Settings.dll' or one of its dependencies.Any suggestions on why that dll appears in the bin folder and how I can prevent it from being deployed when I pusblish through visual studio ?

Then If the domain ever changes I can just change one line of code and not worry about links breaking. I'm not quite sure however how to use this when I register my header and footer user controls.

For some reason ConfigurationMangager is not able to find the appsettings.In NUNIT I would just make sure to add a copy of the webconfig file to the test project so that it is available when running in that context. However this is not working for me.
