C# - What's The Best Way To Handle Web.config File Versions

Apr 14, 2010

I have an ASP.Net web site (ASPX and ASMX pages) with a single web.config file. We have a development version and a production version. Over time, the web.config files for development and production have diverged substantially. What is the best practice for keeping both versions of web.config in source control (we use Tortoise SVN but I don't think that matters)?

It seems like I could add the production web.config file with a name like "web.config.prod", and then when we turnover all the files we would just add the step of deleting the existing web.config and renaming web.config.prod to web.config. This seems hackish, although I'm sure it would work. Is there not some mechanism for dealing with this built in to Visual Studio? It seems like this would be a common issue, but I haven't found any questions (with answers) about this.

Is Normal That None Of The .net Framework Versions Contain A Machine.config File

Mar 30, 2011

I am trying to tune IIS to reduce contention, and following many articles on the .net I am trying to locate this in the file to no result:

<system.web>
...
<httpRuntime minFreeThreads="8" minLocalRequestFreeThreads="4" ... />
....
<processModel maxWorkerThreads="20" maxIoThreads="20" ... />
....
</.system.web>

Is it normal that none of the .net framework versions contain a machine.config file that contains the above settings?

How To Handle 403.9 HTTP Errors In The Web.config File

Nov 23, 2010

Do anyone of you know how to handle XXX.X IIS HTTP errors in a web.config file? I tried doing the following:

<customErrors mode="On" defaultRedirect="error.aspx">
<error statusCode="403" redirect="error403.aspx" />
<!--NOTE: The following does not work-->
<error statusCode="403.9" redirect="error403.9.aspx" />
<!--ENDNOTE-->
<error statusCode="404" redirect="error404.aspx" />
</customErrors>

But obviously that didn't worked, because the web.config file expects an integer as the statusCode value.

Conflict On IIS 7.5 With Web.config When Mixing Different Versions

Nov 30, 2010

I am setting up a new website on new web servers that are running IIS 7.5, which is new to me. I have ran into a problem when deploying an ASP.NET app that is using the 4.0 framework. I get error messages about conflicts with the web.config file associated with the Default Web Site. The asp.net app defined in the default website is using the 2.0 framework currently. My 4.0 framework app is defined as an application under the default website. Both are using different Application Pools. I tried adding this to my 4.0 apps config file

<location path="." inheritInChildApplications="false">

How do I get around this web.config conflict issue? Update for error message: There is a duplicate 'system.web.extensions/scripting/scriptResourceHandler' section defined. The config file for the 4.0 app does not even have this section. The default website app does have this.

How To Migrate Web.config Files To New Versions Of Framework

May 27, 2010

I've migrated two ASP.NET MVC 1 solutions to MVC 2 and therefore kept my web.config almost the same, just changed the necessary stuff in it as documented in Release notes.Although I created a few new test MVC 2 webapss from scratch, until now I haven't really checked out the default new web.config. As I created a new empty MVC 2 Web App today and opened the web.config, I discovered it's much smaller. There's almost no modules, no handlers, etc.

Configuration :: How To Merge A Distribution Web.config File And An Existing Web.config File

Mar 30, 2010

I'm preparing to deploy a ASP.NET web application. The target server has already a previous version of my web application with parameters specified on the web.config file.

In the new version of this web application, the web.config file contains new sections I would like they appear into the target web.config file on the server.

However I can't find the way to merge the new web.config sections into the existing web.config file ?

Does I have to do it programmatically, or is there a tool to merge the both files during installation ? (I'm using Web Setup Project).

How To Create A Common Web.config File And A Bunch Of Specific Web.config Files

Feb 16, 2011

Currently, I work on an ASP.NET project which is hosted under version control and is used on several developer machines, tester machine and production environment.

In three cases, configuration (Web.config) may be different. For example, developer and tester environments use testing SQL Server, whereas in production environment, another SQL Server is accessed, so the connection string is different in those cases.

We want to keep three versions of Web.config in subversion. But modifying each of three files every time we need to add, remove or change a common setting is annoying: it would be nice to have a common, master Web.config, which will be inherited by each of the three Web.config files.

How to set up an ASP.NET project which will use a master configuration file and different slave configuration files on different machines, thus sharing the same project/source code/configuration files in subversion?

How To Determine Which Parent Config File Is Locking A Web.config Setting

Mar 15, 2011

When I open my ASP.NET site in IIS and try to open the .NET Trust Levels, I get an error message:

.NET Trust Levels There was an error while performing this operation.

Details:
Filename: ?C:inetpubwwwrootmyappweb.config
Line number: 445

Error: This configuration section cannot be used at this path. This happens when the section is locked at a parent level. Locking is either by default (overrideModeDefault="Deny"),or set explicitly by a location tag with overrideMode="Deny" or the legacy allowOverride="false".

I've checked a few places, but I haven't found anything that seems like it would be locking that setting. Is there a systematic way of determining where that setting is locked?

I'm using IIS 7.5 and .NET 3.5 sp1.

b) How does machine.config file know about web.config? Is there any link mentioned inside the machine.config file for that?

AJAX :: PageMethods Results Size Limit / Is There A Setting In The Web.config Somewhere To Handle Pagemethod Buffer Size

Mar 24, 2010

I am using PageMethods to send a few parameters to a webmethod in my codebehind. The method runs a stored procedure and uses the results to build a string that I am returning from the method.

Everything works fine until I try to include too many records in my results..

Once the results I am trying to return hit about 70K, the pagemethod times out even though it is taking about 1 second to process the results.

Is there a buffer limit or limit on the size or results returned from a pagemethod and if so, where can this be set or changed?

Is there a setting in the web.config somewhere to handle pagemethod buffer size?

C# - Releasing File Handle On Image?

Jan 17, 2011

I am saving an image file, then using Image namespace to resize the image.

The problem is that from the point of when image is saved to the system, to the point where image resizing is handled, the file handle seem not to get released right away, giving me error "A generic error occurred in GDI+"

Here is my code:

I am using asyncfileupload ajax control, C# in VS 2008

string filename = System.IO.Path.GetFileName(AsyncFileUpload1.FileName);
AsyncFileUpload1.SaveAs(Server.MapPath("./") + "abc.jpeg");

//File handle seems not get released right away here.

System.Drawing.Image FullsizeImage = System.Drawing.Image.FromFile(Server.MapPath("./") + "abc.jpeg");
System.Drawing.Image NewImage = FullsizeImage.GetThumbnailImage(60, 60, null, IntPtr.Zero);
NewImage.Save(Server.MapPath("./") + "abc.jpeg");

For this to work though I have to have a virtual directory called SampleApplication pointing to the folder my web.config file is under.

Is there a way to just specify the path to the file and not have to have a virtual dir?

I tried with

aspnet_regiis -pe "connectionStrings" -location "c:FoldercontainingWebConfigFile"

but i get the error: " path attribute must be a relative virtual path". And cannot contain any of ":" "" etc...

Web Forms :: To Handle The Validation To Check The File Size?

Oct 26, 2010

In my application the user uploads three files ( Resume, Cover Letter, Selection Creteria).

I want users not to upload more then 4 MB files, so In my web.confing file I have allowed max of 5 MB. <httpRuntime maxRequestLength="5000"/>. I did this so that I can validate the file and give user a message that they are trying to upload more then 4 MB file.

It all works fine if the user is only uploading resume. But if the user uploads all three files of size 4MB then my validation does not work and it goes to connection time out.

How can i handle the validation to check the file size of all 3 files?
