Nov 22, 2010So I am working on an MVC project to put to work the studying I have been doing. I am wrestling with the concept of Database Table relationships and foreign keys. I am working on a simple ecommerce site (displays products, shopping cart, user accounts..etc).
I have the following tables to start out with:
1) Products
2) Categories
I setup the Products and Categories tables to have a ProductId and CategoryId respectively. In my MySQL db, I created a FK on the Products Table to relate to the CategoryId field on the Categories table (I am not sure this was correct to begin).
My expectations for the way the database would handle the table relationship: I didn't want the DB to do anything with the products table if I deleted a category out of the Categories table, or vise versa. The only thing would be that the category field in a Product would be blank (or default) if their category was removed.
Finally, do I have to do anything in my entity classes such as in the Products class, add the ProductId to the Category.ProductId?
Eventually, when I Orders and Users to the project, I can see a relationship where each user -> many orders -> each order has many products -> and each product is in one category.
But I am having a hard time understanding how or if I should be setting up a Foreign key relationship in the two current tables of Products and Categories and if so how to setup my entity class in relation to that FK.

Saving Div Layout / Tables With Content Via C# Or JavaScript?
Mar 16, 2011I have some JavaScript that on button click takes a the text from the textarea and places it into a div.
What I would like to do preferably via C# is save that content (somehow) to a textdoc maybe? or straight into the database (unsure as it could contain alot). So unfimilar with JavaScript hence my preference for C but if JavaScript could do the job it would be nice to have the client side run the script.
Atm all I want to do is save the divs somehow then later I will learn how to retrieve them.
The JavaScript I have atm for creating the div:

I try to minimize <% %> code placing "{" symbol on the same line as it's condition (java-style). Html layout looks more clear to me after that.
Do you apply C# formatting rules to <% %> html injections "}" should be on a new line or manage layout in different way?

This layout should work fine with first row columns should have width of 70 and 30% resp
and second row should have width of 50 and 50 resp. But the output what i see different.
what could be the problem and how to fix it. I couple of solutions for it
1. defining width at column level will work
2. defining a blank row with four columns above or below.

AJAX :: Html Editor Inside A FormView Loses The Layout (css Mistake?)
Mar 5, 2010This is my mistake: If I put an AJAX Editor INSIDE a FormView it loses the layout (I see all the icons button disordered and the Editor without background). If I simultaneously put an Editor inside a FormView and externally in the page both works fine and I see both in the right way. I repeat: with another Editor in the page the Editor inside the FormView works fine!!
I think it may depend on the css, so I have tried to modify the "DesignPanelCssPath" and the "DocumentCssPath" of the Editor inside the FormView, but nothing has changed.
Forms Data Controls :: Change Grid View From Table To Other HTML Layout?
Aug 24, 2010You'll have to excuse my ignorance, I'm coming at this from a front-end perspective, and don't really know how to deal with data views in ASP.NET.
Basically, I'm trying to change the layout of some repeated data from a straight table, to something more design-heavy. It's the same data, just re-organised slightly. The current ASP.NET code looks like this:

However, I want to replace all of this, such that each 'row' of data renders like this:

How is this done? Can I just edit the code above, or would I need to do something more advanced in terms of not using a data grid and using some other control instead? Is it something that can be done in just a .aspx file or would it need to be done in C# and compiled?
WebMatrix :: Razor 3, _PageStart Doesn't Display Layout?
Mar 4, 2011I can not get the _PageStart.cshtml to work for my layout senario. I would prefer to use _PageStart to define a layout for all files in each folder. Each folder represents a different app feature that will contain different layouts.
Until I find a work about I had to copy and past the Layout ="~/folder/_PageStart.cshtml into each page of the folder to get the different layouts to work.
_PageStart isn't being recognized at all as the folders page start. Is there a web config setting missing? The docs aren't fully extensive yet for all Razor related info and I couldn't find anyone discussing this problem via search results.
In order to keep close to code once and separation I need to use the _PageStart.cshtml method rather than code a line in each page in the folder.
On win7 using both webmatrix and vs2010 web engines. Neither recognizes _PageStart.cshtml but hard coding into each file works.

I have tried the repeater, but having issues with paging since its linked to a SQLDatasource.
I have done a search on "Paging Repeater" and all examples are setup with XML and other datasources and im not able to figure out how to modify that to work with my SQLDatasource.

IE6 displays the layout just fine, but Firefox for some reason shows the whole thing in a small panel at the top of the page, with a scrollbar.

Start To Create HTML Website With 2 Tables Read From Csv Files
May 25, 2010I want to design a website which displays on loading two tables each with it's respective data from a csv file. Then every minute the website automatically refreshes. This problem seems so simple! But yet the solution eludes me.
All of the files will be contained in 1 directory, not on a server but on a local machine. Such as sitting on the desktop. I understand if I use javascript I have to use ADO, and I'm still trying to work out how to use ASP. I am new with both languages. So far the only restriction is that I can't use PHP. So the jist so far as I can think right now is:
1. read the file
2. place the file into an array by splitting at the commas
3. write the array into td's ?????
4. then print all this out into a div ????
I have googled my heart out and can't seem to find what I'm looking for. or even piece together what I'm looking for. Everything with javascript and ADO's leads me to dead ends, I can't find anything on ASP that is helpful. Could someone write up some sample code for a resource? Or have a better solution?

I am using ADO.Entity framework to create the model.I want to perform following operations.
1.Applying 1:1 association between the tables.
2.To show the information EmpID,Name,Designation,Address,Phone for all the existing records in tables on View.
3.On Selecting the Edit link want to show EmpID,Name,Designation,Address,Phone for the corresponding EmpId in EditView and then perform updation of the records in 2 tables both in Employee_master,Employee_Detail on Save.

I have a ChartController with the following code:

Now I need a view. The view that VS2010 creates via the PTP_AthleteExerciseResult model looks like just what I need. But I get the following error:
The model item passed into the dictionary is of type 'System.Data.Entity.Infrastructure.DbQuery`1[PersonalTrainerPro.Models.PTP_Exercise]',
but this dictionary requires a model item of type 'System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable`1[PersonalTrainerPro.Models.PTP_AthleteExerciseResult]'.
I'm not sure why it is passing PersonalTrainerPro.Models.PTP_Exercise, which is one of my automatically generated models derived from the database in the edmx and I have no idea how to set it up to pass IEnumerable instead of DbQuery. I actually have no idea what it means or even if I'm heading in the right direction.

Feb 4, 2011Is there a standard method for calculating fixed width values for tables in HTML? Right now, I'm working on formatting tables on a web page to be a fixed width, I have a table that's within another table, when testing the page in IE I notice that the alignment of the colon is off as the second picture below illustrates. My intention is to make sure the colons are properly aligned as they are in Firefox and was just curious if the misalignment was due to the settings in the HTML or if it has more to do with how the browser renders the page.

I know it's ugly, just a note, this is an ASP.Net generated webpage and I'm setting the attributes of the HTML elements pro-grammatically from the code behind. I sorta inherited this and my employer wants to keep major changes to a minimum. UPDATE 2: When I adjust the inner table width I can get it to align in IE when set to 1377px. For Firefox, the sweet spot for alignment is 1260px.
