How To Handle Errors During Async Postbacks

Jan 5, 2010

We have an ASP.NET page which uses an update panel for partial page postbacks. On the server side, the postback performs some database work and updates several UI elements. The database code is all contained in several transactions, so the state will still be consistent if an exception is thrown. We're working on some error handling code now, and my first thought was to log the exception thrown, reload the last consistent UI state, and show some sort of modal popup or other ui element with a brief error message for the user (this is an intranet page, so we're automatically notified of the bug, and the users know where to find us.

Multiple Async Postbacks At The Same Time?

Dec 11, 2010

Say I have 2 UpdatePanels on the page and each UpdatePanel has a one server Button each. When I click on the first button and then the second button and look in Firebug, I see that the 2nd async postback is not triggered until the first one completes.

Is this working as expected? My understanding was with AJAX postbacks, the event handlers for the buttons trigger simultaneously.

AJAX :: Nested Updatepanels And Async Postbacks?

Mar 23, 2011

I'm trying to get something like this to work

[Code]....

What I'm looking for is to disable the submit button if any of the inner updatepanels are in postback mode. I would also like some way to block that particular panel. I guess for the outer updatepanel, updatemode should be set to conditional, and usechildrenastriggers should be false. What's really bugging me is how to block the panel while a postback is occurring.

In all my tests thus far, the outer updatepanel's updateprogress is triggered, which blocks the whole page.

AJAX :: Events Don't Fire In Async Postbacks

Feb 16, 2010

So I have a page with an UpdatePanel and some controls in there. When I explicitly type/copy+paste the page's address into the address bar, let VS navigate there for me, or follow a link to the page, all of the AJAX works fine. But if I refresh this page, the JS on the page initiates the async postback, but the appropriate event is never called on the server (although Page_Load is) and the client never recieves the markup sent back by the server. This issue seems to be limited to Firefox 3.6 (Gecko build 1/15/2010)(doesn't happen in IE8). I have yet to try on other versions of Firefox.

Ajax - Telerik Rad Combo And Async Postbacks In C#?

Jul 26, 2010

I have a very typical set up, an ajax update panel is updated when a drop list of offices changes. Each form could have it's own values, for instance each store will have it's own list of employees. Here is where the fun begins. The form can be changed by the drop down (new office) or validated and submitted.

On drop down change, I create a new instance of the same rad combo, bind it to the current data, confirm that the correct data is bound. Then on the return trip I see selected the default user from the previous user. This is a composite control, and firebug shows me that the value for the "text box" that simulates the combo still has the old value. I'm suspecting onViewStateLoaded, but turning viewstate off for the Telerik didn't . II don;t need it anyway, cuz I have to put the selected value in another hidden to make a cross page post on submit.

Async Postbacks Happening When SupportsPartialRendering Is Set To False?

Sep 9, 2010

We're getting a confusing error on two of our pages in our ASP.NET application. Both pages originaly had tags to reload the page every so often if a user sat on it for a while, but opted to remove those in favor of some AJAX flavoring. Specifically, we created timer controls on the page and wired the timer's tick event as a trigger for an update panel to reload a portion of the page. The page(s) also have scriptmanagers on them as we don't have one on the master page. This largely works great except we're getting a lot of these errors:

"The page is performing an async postback but the ScriptManager.SupportsPartialRendering property is set to false."

It is my understanding that if the .NET framework detects a browser doesn't support partial rendering it will set the ScriptManager.SupportsPartialRendering value to false and we're NOT overriding this in any fashion. Therefore, the pages shouldn't be by performing async postbacks if that value is false, but based on the error the postbacks are still happening and the page is throwing an exception.

Curiously, the user agent always seems to be GoogleBot or "Mozilla/4.0 (Windows 98; US) Opera 10.00 [en]".

AJAX :: Script To Prevent Multiple Async And Synchronous Postbacks?

Jan 12, 2010

I am having a problem with users clicking submitting pages multiple times. What is happening is a user will click a link, if nothing happens in .025 seconds they click another link or menu item, etc. I handle users clicking the back button and the impatient user winds up getting directed to my "Dont click the back button" page even though they dont click the back button.

I need to prevent mutiple submits by disabling all submit controls on my pages. I dont have a single submit button, i have pages with menus, gridviews, yada yada that all need to get turned off.
I have pages that use update panels and pages that dont. All my pages inherit from a BasePage class. I would like to solve this problem by implementing the solution in my BasePage class.

I did a little research and found this little script that works for synchronous postbacks:

AJAX :: Cannot Select Object In Update Panel After A Number Of Async PostBacks

Jan 9, 2011

I am trying to create a simple web application that uses a barcode scanner to read the barcode and then insert the information into a database. I have been able to get the barcode scanner to read the barcode and place the information into a textbox.

Then using javascript when the enter key is triggered on the scanner it then clicks the button to do a AsyncPostBack on the updatepanel then using scriptManager.RegisterStartupScript I then focus on the text box and then select the text in it ready for a new barcode to be entered.

The problem that I am having is that I can get it to post back 26 times then it will go to error (with no information). If I then add additional controls to the page I can only get it to post back 10 times. Below is my code... I have been pulling my hair out for the last two days.

Security :: Postbacks With Authentication Causing Errors?

Jan 28, 2010

After adding personalization and authentication to my site, I was getting pitched out of my application( which is on a hosted server), and sent back to the log in screen . I disabled authentication to see if I could figure out what was going on. I found that

I was getting a system error:

Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that <machineKey> configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster.

This error has been reported elsewhere [URL] so I made the following change to my web.config

<pages theme="Theme1" enableViewStateMac="false" enableEventValidation="false" viewStateEncryptionMode="Never">

This seems to have worked to a point, because with authentication DISABLED, I no longer get the error. But when I RE_ENABLE authentication, I get pitched out randomly back to the login screen. Time out is not an issue. It only happens when I move very quickly through screens that are doing a lot of postbacks.

This is the authentication stuff from my web.config

<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms name=".ASPXAUTH"
loginUrl="~/Login/Login.aspx"
protection="All"
timeout="3000"
path="/"
requireSSL="false"
slidingExpiration="true"
cookieless="UseDeviceProfile" />
</authentication>
<authorization>
<deny users="?"/>
</authorization>

I tried AutoDetect on cookieless as well. No change. I would appreciate ideas on how to troubleshoot this problem.

C# - Best Practice To Handle Exception In The Async Call?

Nov 11, 2010

For example, I am using wenclient.DownloadfileAsync to download a file asynchronously.

In the DownloadFileCompleted event handler, I can check if I have any exception or not by using AsyncCompletedEventArgs.Error property.

If I re-throw this exception, however my executable is stopping running immediately.

I am wondering how to handle this kind of exeception? How to pass this exception back to the
calling thread?

AJAX :: How To Handle Async Exception Thrown In Module

May 11, 2010

i'm using asp.net 2.0 form with ajax. i have an ihhtpmodule which can thrown an exception at Application_EndRequest step. my problem is that if this happen in an async postback (i mean a postback of an update panel) i can't manage the exception (with manage i mean set a custom error message server-side) becouse it's too late for the error handler of the ScriptManager.

(the alert will print a message as:

Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerParserErrorException: The message received from the server could not be parsed. Common causes for this error are when the response is modified by calls to Response.Write(), response filters, HttpModules, or server trace is enabled.

Details: Error parsing near 'MyButt" />

|<html>
<head>)

at the moment my idea is to clear the response in the module and find a way to use the scriptmanager to send the correctly response of an error/exception. it's this possible? or samebody has another option of how to manage this case? note:i can't edit the aspx to manage this client client side with custom javascript

C# - Handle Errors On Certain Pages Differently?

Mar 28, 2011

I have an Application_Error handler in my Global.asax file. However, I load many pages using an XHR request and would rather these "sub pages" return javascript or a real 500 code for my main app to process, rather than an error page.

Is it possible to handle errors on certain pages in a different way? Can a master page handle its own errors in a page extending it without bubbling it up to Global.asax?

ADO.NET :: Closing Sql Connection Properly And Handle Errors?

This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached. I did fix this with resetting my pooling and setting a pooling max =100 Anyway now Im starting to rethink how I open connections, dealing with errors and proper closing of connections Would you say this code below is a good way of opening, closing connections (even when errors occurred)

Dim Connection As SqlConnection
Dim myConn As String = (ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("MyConnString").ConnectionString)
Connection = New SqlConnection(myConn)
Try
Dim DBCommand As SqlCommand
Dim dt As New DataTable()
Dim myDataSet As New DataSet
Connection.Open()
DBCommand = New SqlCommand("GetAllCategories_", Connection)
DBCommand.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
DBCommand.Parameters.Add("@HomePageID", SqlDbType.Int).Value = HiddenChosenVirtualMainID.Value
Dim mySqlAdapter As New SqlDataAdapter(DBCommand)
mySqlAdapter.Fill(dt)
SecondLevelChildDatalist.DataSource = dt
SecondLevelChildDatalist.DataBind()
Catch ex As Exception
'Error goes here
SqlConnection.ClearAllPools()

'close the connction

AJAX :: How To Handle Errors / Exceptions During Postback

Mar 27, 2010

I really want to switch over to ajax, but i can't seem to get my error handlling perfect. If i can't handle errors correctly, I just can't use it. What I really want to happen is to do a full refresh of the Top Frame. How I normally do this is by a similar call to Response.Write(<script>top.location.href = ""</script>). I was currently doing this in Global.asax. This becomes a problem when I error out in an AJAX postback. I've also noticed that There is an AsycPostbackErrorHandler you can attach to the ScriptManager. This is all find an dandy, but it will still hit my Global.asax Application_Error Event.

I am honestly just not sure how to handle this.

As I said, the result I want is....To Reload the Top Frame with some Error Message...whether I have to do some weird redirection or whatever. My problem lies specifically with the Global.asax file.

Handle Errors At Application Or Server Level?

Sep 28, 2010

When setting up asp.net error handlers for things like 404 errors, it is more 'efficient' to do this in IIS, or handle it in the Global.asax Application_Error event? I know the latter will be called, and I want to log this information in a database, but should I then just return without any redirect and let IIS do the redirect, or would it be better to do a response.redirect inside application_error once we've logged it?

C# - Handle All Errors/messages In One Place On Page?

May 7, 2010

On my site I put things in Web user controls. For example, I will have a NewsItem Control, an Article Control, a ContactForm control.These will appear in various places on my site.

What I'm looking for is a way for these controls to pass messages up to the Page that they exist on.

I don't want to tightly couple them, so I think I will have to do this with Events/Delegates. I'm a little unclear as to how I would implement this, though.

A couple of examples:

1: A contact form is submitted. After it's submitted, instead of replacing itself with a "Your mail has been sent" which limits the placement of that message, I'd like to just notify the page that the control is on with a Status message and perhaps a suggested behaviour. So, a message would include the text to render as well as an enum like DisplayAs.Popup or DisplayAs.Success

2: An Article Control queries the database for an Article object. Database returns an Exception. Custom Exception is passed to the page along with the DisplayAs.Error enum. The page handles this error and displays it wherever the errors go.

I'm trying to accomplish something similar to the ValidationSummary Control, except that I want the page to be able to display the messages as the enum feels fit.

Again, I don't want to tightly bind or rely a control existing on the Page. I want the controls to raise these events, but the page can ignore them if it wants.I'd love a code sample just to get me started.

I know this is a more involved question, so I'll wait longer before voting/choosing the answers.

Httpresponse - How To Handle Errors When Using C# To Create A Zipfile For Download

Oct 29, 2010

I'm working on a functionality in my asp.net web site that enables the user to download some files as a zip file. I'm using the DotNetZip library to generate the zip file.

My code looks like this:

protected void OkbtnZipExport_OnClickEvent(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
var selectedDocumentIds = GetSelectedDocIds();
string archiveName = String.Format("archive-{0}.zip", DateTime.Now.ToString("yyyy-MMM-dd-HHmmss"));
AddResponseDataForZipFile(Response, archiveName);
try
{
string errorMessage = Utils.ExportToZip(selectedDocumentIds, arkivdelSearchControl.GetbraArkivConnection(), Response.OutputStream);
if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(errorMessage)).......

Now, if anything goes wrong, say the Utils.ExportToZip method fails, I want to present an error message to the user and not the download dialog. Do I have to remove some data from the Response object in order to cancel the download operation?

ADO.NET :: Handle Errors In Data Access Layer Code?

I want to ensure I am actually connecting to the datasource, so, I am wanting to use a try/catch block within my data access layer class methods. What I am not sure how to handle is a case where the connectionstate is not open. The method should ideally return a datatable. If an error is thrown would I just return an empty datatable? That is my first thought. My other thought is to return an object and pass a datatable if the connection succeeds or the exception if the connection fails.
