Iis - Auto-Start .NET Applications?
Sep 4, 2010
As mentioned here. http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2009/09/15/auto-start-asp-net-applications-vs-2010-and-net-4-0-series.aspx.Is there another way to do this? By just modifying the application's web.config file?

I have worked mostly with PHP when creating web sites driven by dynamic content. However I am wanting to start writting more applications in ASP. So I have a copule of questions that I can't seem to find the exact answers I need.1) I'll be creating a website for a company and then later be adding an online ordering system for them - would I best be served by writting the entire site in MVC2 since I will be getting into an online ordering system?2) Does it make sense to create my own shopping cart system - or are there free packages out there in ASP.NET that I should be utilizing instead of rolling my own? I3)I am currently working in Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 - this is using the .NET 4.0 framework - I thought it better to use this instead of my older Visual Studio 2005 Professional - if I can't afford the full package of VS 2010 once its released - will theexpress editions support all I need? 4)If I am building in 2010 will I have a problem getting the site hosted since that framework is still in Beta? And can you suggest a good web host to use for .NET hosting - I usually work with GoDaddy for all my hosting needs - but I'm not sure if anyonehas experience in how quickly they will update to the newest frameworks etc , or if I should be hosting somewhere else.

I have some scheduled jobs that need to be run in the Application_Start but as far as I know, this method only get triggered after the first request. Is there anyway I can just auto startup the application after I stop and start the connection in IIS or stop/start/restart the site?

What is the right approach when users (authenticated domain admins) should be able to start batch jobs (usually exe files) from an IIS (7.x) aspx (c#) page? This is an intranet site. The batch jobs have to run on the web server as Domain Admins. The website pool is executed by network service or some similar restricted account in AD.
Approaches I can think of (and their disadvantages):
1. Start exe file with System.Diagnostics.Process.Start with another account. This feature is disabled in IIS 7.x, how do I allow it?
2. Create a sheduled task and call scheduled task-api. This unmanaged dll is giving VS compiler warnings because it's unsafe to call from managed code.
3. I suppose there's a better approach, because the previous suggestions doesn't appear safe or robust.

suddenly, with my Visual Studio 2008 I can no longer debugging my web applications (ASP.NET 3.5). I obtain this error: Unable to start debugging on the web server. Click Help for more information. Auto-attach to process [8360] w3wp.exe' on machine 'DELL' failed. The weird thing is that I haven't done special changes to my IIS.

I've been worked with web services so far, and I'm interested in expanding my services to console applications as well so I started digging up with WCF but I'm conserned that I won't be able to use the HttpContext collection that I've been used to do with web services one important thing which is to generate a random value from HttpContext.Current.Request.ServerVariables["ALL_HTTP"] that I need to reckon if it's the same or at least near what machine that is calling my service. How can I overcome this problem?
I need to know what machine is calling to count the number of attempts to login into my system for example. So must do it inside of the svc code otherwise if I let the client inform what ip address or what computer he is using, anyone could forge this argument and surpass by another machine. May be I'm approaching this matter wrongly. And I should count the number of attempts per state session, but how is it done?

I am trying to register the route collection in .net based on each session. The code I have works fine, you goto website/username and it loads the correct sub pages, but you have to restart the application to goto website/username2 to load those sub pages. But when the application is restarted the second one works, but then not the first one. Is there some way to create a different route collection per session not per application using system.web.routing.

Our corporate intranet is designed so that each web application is a child application in the primary application.. Everything has worked fine with Visual Studio 2008 and even in 2010 running the website locally works great, the output directory for the child apps is ..in and the ProjectName.dll copies to that directory.. When I do a publish however it does not and I have to manually copy the dll from the bin folder in the project folder to the parent bin folder, this isn't hard of course but more of a pain in the butt each time I need to publish something. I made sure the output directory is correct for both debug and release yet on publish is just copies it to the child bin and not the parent bin as needed.

I have a "database explorer" page that is desgined to be pointed to an unknown database and allow users to browse the data, so it basically uses the SQL system tables to develop its queries and pull in data to tables using auto-generate columns. The problem that I have is that I would like certain types of columns to have certain formats and I'm wondering the best way to go about it. I could format the column in code in the RowDataBound event I assume, but I'm wondering if there some better standard way to do this? Is there a setting of any kind that I can use? For example I want all of the datetime fields to be formated for short date, like {0:d}, I want decimal fields to have 4 decimal places, etc.

I have a simple online web system where it possible for the visitors to "play around" with the system. They can like create categories and products and so forth. Everything they create are stored into a database.
What I want is to be able to reset this database with my default values (table data) every n hours.
So for example if we have a bunch of users that have played with the system and created new things. Then I want to be able to make some kode that deletes all data in the tables in this database and fill it with default data. The default data can come from a backup file, or another database with same tables structure or whatever.
I want this task to be done every day at 12 pm or every n hour.
Is this possible (by forexample scheduled webservice tasks or just something as long as it is simple).

I would like to start a System.Threading.Timer in my application when it launches (maybe deploy is the correct word). I have seen that you can use Application_Start() but this is only fired once the first request comes to the application. I need the timer to start as soon as the application is running so that it can check for work to process even if a user is not interacting with the site. How can I get the application to start the timer once it is up and running?

I am running Visual Studio 2010 (as Admin), IIS 7 on Windows 7 x64. I am able to run the ASP.NET web site in IIS 7 without debugging just fine, but when I press F5 to debug it, I get: Unable to start debugging on the web server. Could not start ASP.NET debugging. More information may be available by starting the project without debugging. Unfortunately the help link is not helping me much and leads down a heck of a large tree of things. I checked the following:
Security requirements — I don't recall having to do anything special before. The worker process in IIS7 is w3wp.exe. It says that if it's running as ASPNET or NETWORK SERVICE I must have Administrator privileges to debug it. How do I find out if I need to change something here? Web site Property Pages > Start Options > Debuggers > ASP.NET is checked. Use custom server is set to the URL of the site (which works fine without debugging). Debugging is enabled in web.config. Application is using ASP.NET 3.5 (I want to move to 4.0 eventually but I have some migration to deal with). Application pool: Classing .NET AppPool (also tried DefaultAppPool). Surely it shouldn't be that hard to install IIS, VS, create a web site, and start testing it?

In our ASP.NET application we perform some initializations upon the Application Start event. When the application is started in visual Studio 2010 with 'Debug->Start new instance' the ASP.NET Development server does not start new, and my Application's Start event is not fired. My workaround is to manually stop the development server - is there a setting to force this automatically?

i am working on a web application that now requires a CMS.
Could you suggest me a product that grant integration with my existing application.
The latter is implemented using .Net framework 3.5 Linq to sql and SQL Server 2008
I may consider even not open source product (affordable price)
i want to create a Master page and allow the application's users to modify the content.
Ideally give them the ability to add controls such as image sliders (but this is not the main scope)
Main objective is the ability to modify the content usually text. Bu more is always better.

HiMy web site uses 2 unmanaged DLLs (gsl.dll, cblas.dll). I put these dll's in the bin folder along with some other managed dll's. On my development system everything is fine when using the built-in dev server in Visual Studio 2010. However, when I run the site through my dev system's IIS instead of the Visual Studio server I get the following error:'C:<absolute path to bin folder>ingsl.dll': Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED))

We have several web applications that create a shopping cart, save it to a database, then redirect to a centralized web application to process and accept payment for the shopping cart. Right now, we are using GUIDs for the shopping cart IDs and passing those GUIDs in the querystring to the payment application. We are using GUIDs so that a user cannot easily guess the shopping cart ID of another user and simply plug that ID into the URL.
Now, using GUIDs in the database is bad for indexing and using GUIDs in the URL does not truly prevent a user from accessing another cart. However, using passing integers around would make it too easy.
What is the best and most secure way to pass the IDs from the individual applications to the centralized payment application?
I know that some people may say, "Who cares if someone else wants to pay for someone else's shopping cart?" However, we have the same concern when passing IDs to the page that displays the receipt and that page includes the customer's name.
