View 3 RepliesI am using Visual studio 2010 express and I have a details view databinded to an sql database table. When I use the Insert option on the view it causes an error due to it trying to insert a null into the primary key field. If the Insert function does not create a new primary key entry how is it created?
View 9 RepliesI have a column in my database which contains null value. Now after retrieving value from database i want to store that value in my txtbox. I am getting
[DBTableFieldIsNullException: Field 'Title' is NULL] exception.
I have a form and stored procedure that inserts the data from the form. It works fine except that if a field isn't filled in it doesn't insert a NULL into sql it inserts "".
I've tried a few different ways but none seem to insert NULL, the one below still inserts "", can anyone point me in the right direction.
Here is the required part of the code, if you require more just let me know.

So if I enter nothing into address1 field it should write NULL to screen but it always writes NOT NULL.
My database includes a table with sever filds which are defined as (varchar(1),null), I tried using DBNull.Value, null, ' ' but cannot get a null inserted in that field of the database,

i have some problem in passing null value to an integer datatype in sql. Here is my code:-
[Code]....
The if statement within query is where i am having problem!
I have an integer field in my sql database and I have an xsd set up with all the CRUD operations. I need to put the value in a variable into the this integer field. Sometimes the value is 'nothing'. I have option strict on so there's no conversions going on by itself. If I hard code 'nothing' into the insert query, it works fine. Here's what happens otherwise:
1) If I put a variable into the query, when I assign 'nothing' to the variable, it becomes 0 so it puts a 0 into my database.
2) If I use an iif( ) statement, it also converts 'nothing' to 0
I don't seem to have any way to get a nothing in there if I don't specifically write 'nothing'.
I receive the error message below, I think because the database field in question is null (I realize I probably should not allow null values, but I can't even display the page to allow the user to enter a value---and I would prefer not to enter a default value in SQL).
How do I avoid this error message? If the column is null (and it is supposed to be an integer), do I need to change the value to something like "0" in the code behind---or is there any easier way to do this right in aspx page (see source of error message below)? Either way, I'm not sure how to do either (I can't get any such lines of code to work here). Object cannot be cast from DBNull to other types.

I have an sproc which selects data out of my table. The column can return integer or NULLs.
I get the 'failed to enable constraints error' when databinding. If I go to my tableadapter and select my column there is a NullValue property which has 'Throw Exception, Null, Empty'. If I try and unset the exception option it tells me only strings are allowed this. However the 'AllowDBNull' option is set to TRUE.
What is the alternative and will this be fixed in 2010?
I have a AdvWebGrid where the 7th coloumn is DynEdit where user will enter the value.Now I have to take the enetered value and insert into the Sql tablel. For example i have 7 records in the grid the user will enter some comments for the first three record and save.Now i have to insert/update the first three comments in the table.
View 2 Repliesint no = int.Parse(hidden_field.Value.TrimStart()); it cause the error: input format was not in correct format. how to fix it?
View 5 Repliesi have atable:
STDNo nvarchar(6) //student number primary
CID nvarchar(7) //course ID primary
DNo int //Department Number primary
H1 int allow null // Home work 1
H2 int allow null
H3 int allow null
H4 int allow null
H5 int allow null
Q1 int allow null //Quize 1
Q2 int allow null
Q3 int allow null
Q4 int allow null
Q5 int allow null
HE1 int allow null
HE2 int allow null
FExam int allow null // Final Exam
and stored procedure like this:
ALTER procedure [dbo].[AddMonthlyMarks]
(
@STDNo nvarchar(6),
@CID nvarchar(7),
@Dno int =isnull,
@H1 int,
@H2 int,..........................
the Data key name of grid is STDNo the problem is that the instructor this month will add only homework1(h1) for specific student number or to all students and rest of home works and quezies will not entered (Null), to the next month he will enter home work 2 ,etc... i get an error and i think that the null values for others home works in grid make this error caution: in table i check allow null property,the data type is integer How i can convert this null values to integer?
i'm trying to sort a datatable using the typical select method*. The problem comes because the field is string defined but it's containing integer values.
With sql the problem will be solved just using something like:
select * from table order by to_number(field);
but of course it's not working properly with the method commented above (select method).

I have a GridView that records can be added to.There are only 2 fields in the table that the records come from which are date field and an integer field.The date field is fine "as is".The problem is that you can't format the integer field.I have tried every way that I can think off.The last 2 ways that I have tried have used String.Format because I am using EVal and with Eval you can supply anoptional second parameter to specify a format for the returned string.I have tried in both html and code behind , html gives an error message but the code behind (code behindthe RowDataBound method) doesn't give an error message:In the html looks like:
<ItemTemplate>
<%# Eval(("inFrmDate").ToString(), String.Format("{G}")) %>
</ItemTemplate>
[code]...
I have a DetailsView on the page and I have made one of the fields a TemplateField. In the EditItemTemplate and InsertItemTemplate I have a DropdownList that is databound to a table in my Sql Server database. I wanted to add an initial value to the DropdownList
namely "- select -" .
I set the AppendDataBoundItems property to true and added the initial value as a ListItem.Markup of the DropdownList
<asp:DropDownList ID="DropDownList_HP" runat="server"
AppendDataBoundItems="True" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource_HP" [code]...
This works fine for new input. The problem is however that the database already has records that were entered through a Windows Application and many of these records has a null value in this field and exceptions are thrown when I tried to open these records
and the system tried to set the SelectedValue of the DropdownList.After some more searching I found this help
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms366709.aspx
So I changed the ListItem in the DropDownList markup to the following:
<asp:DropDownList ID="DropDownList_RefHospDV4" runat="server"
AppendDataBoundItems="True" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource_RefHosp" [code]...
This now solved the problem of opening a record where the value is null in the database, BUT now the RequiredFieldValidator is not validating anymore to make sure that a databound item is selected for this field and not the initial value "- select -". So basically now it is not checking anymore to see if valid input has been entered for the DropDownList and it accepts "- select -" thus it acts as if the field is not a required field anymore.
In short what is required is that I want to make sure that the user enters a valid selection in the DropDownList, but it must also cater for old records that do not have this field entered yet so that those old records can be opened in the DetailsView .Opening Old records (with null in that field):When these old records are opened in the DetailsView the DropDownlist should show "- select -" when the value in the database is null.
Saving records (old or new records):When saving the record in Insert mode or Update mode the RequiredFieldValidator should show that a valid input is not selected if the DropDownList is still on "- select -".
I have a form with many form fields and controls, with some offering an "other" if a value does not meet the needs for the user. How can I bind the sql insert so that it will take the ddl selection along with the txt field selection for the "other" value? Even if the txt field is empty it should not be a big deal since the ddl would provide something other than null. Since the column in the db does not allow nulls. I'm using asp.net (vb) 3.5 sp1
View 3 RepliesIn Microsoft Access Database Form, I have a series of five fields. I would like to set up a field that is equal to the first field unless that field is null or 0. Then I want the field to be equal to the second field unless that field is null or 0, continuing the same way through the five fields. Being a newb, I have no idea how.
View 1 Replieshere is my code for selectiong some records from db table
string strSql = "select * from mtblNBD where SentTo=@SentTo and InternalStatus Is NULL order by DeadLine desc";
SqlCommand com = new SqlCommand(strSql, con);
com.Parameters.Add("@SentTo", SqlDbType.NVarChar, 50).Value = (string)Session["uname"];
here I am using parameters for SenTo field but not for NULL so it is ok... or should I use parameters for this field where value is NULL , if yes then how can I use parameter for this
I remember being told that you can add some syntax to the end of a statement that will do something if the field is null. Pretty vague, but I cant seem to find anything about it via google.
I definitely isnt how to set a field to be nullable. I know that.
Here is an example of what I want.
int? field1 = 0;
field1 = int.parse(string2); (where string2 is a passed value, that could be null)
I thought there was something you could put at ?? if it is a null, such as:
field1 = int.parse(string2) ??;
Or do I have to check every if every string2 is null before making that statement.

Cannot insert the value NULL into column?
I am trying to insert null in a database column depending on a gridview datakeys value (if being "" insert null into database)However, I am getting a space ' ' inside the database column.
string sbcId = gvTest.DataKeys[gr.RowIndex]["myColumn"].ToString();
insgnp.Parameters.Add(new OleDbParameter("EMPID", (sbcId==""?DBNull.Value.ToString():sbcId)));
Actually i have a table with 7 columns
1) Title varchar(100)
2)Description varchar(300)
3)ProfilePicture varbinary(max)
4) Image1 varbinary (max)
5)Image2 varbinary(max)
6)Image3 varbinary(max)
7)Image4 varbinary(max)
Image1,2,3,4 are not a mandatory fields so, when i inserted, i check it if it is not there then i insert null value, Now problem is when i retrive them if there is a row contain image1,2 are image content and 3,4 are null values dataset also filling as it is in database but when i checking like
[code]....
it shows error like
Unable to cast object of type 'System.DBNull' to type 'System.Byte[]'.
In the below code when I remove the optional end date and click save it should just take the value as blank, but it doesn't
when I remove the date and click save it saves but still shows the same date as before...when I make it to null it should remain null...how do i do that
#region Save Package
protected void btnBack_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
this.Response.Redirect("/?id=Promotion.PackageList");
}
