Interpret The Results Of The ANTS Memory Profiler?
Dec 20, 2010
I've been profiling my ASP.NET application with ANTS Memory Profiler 6, and have seen indications of memory leaks. However, I don't know whether or not the growths I'm seeing are supposed to be there or not (for instance, System.String grows a lot each snapshot. Should it?)I don't understand the whole memory processso I don't know if I am interpreting the results correctly or not. How do I interpret the results of the ANTS Memory Profiler?

I have a memory issue on my websites and am trying to get to the bottom of it. I have downloaded the 14 day trial of ANTS Memory Profiler and have been playing with it to get a grip of what it's telling me. In the memory options on the timeline, I can see Bytes in All Heaps and Private Bytes etc but I am not sure which ones I should be focusing on to see where the memory spikes and doesn't go back down.I am profiling a ASP.NET website using ASP.NET 2.0.

Is there any application similar to CLR Profiler that I could use for my web applications?
Or maybe I can just use CLR Profiler for IIS also? But I do not know how to indicate which web application I wan observe.

I have a update panel combined with gridview with sorting and paging.
I go into task manager to monitor the memory usage of the worker process (w3wp)
What I do is just click on the sort buttons rapidly.
With each click the memory of the process increases with about 2 mb
So I go from 30 mb memory usage to about 90. Then it stops at remains there, no memory is freed up. I am not using caching or session/application state.
What can be causing this, is there a setting in IIS to reduce the mem usage?
I also used .net profiler to examine my app memory usage: 4 mb, so what is the other 86 used for??? Even though it repots 4mb, in task manager it says 90 mb, so this leads me to believe that the rest is namanaged memory which must be used by IIS in some way.

I have a personal logs entry for a website. This enables the user to enter logs/notes, etc. The information is stored in a column of a database with HTML coding; <br />, <b>, etc.I need to export this to a PDF using a Crystal reports. I have a crystal report configured already, and it's displaying the information as standard text; the <br /> and <b> are displayed as such without the proper formatting. How do I configured my Crystal Report to correct interpret the HTML codes for formatting within the report?

I am creating a web app in ASP.NET with VB code behind. I would like it so that a user can input a url ("[URL]") and then when the user presses the GO button, I want the system to interprete the [URL] page (without navigating to it), look in the HTML source, and store all data that is present within the URL's <p></p> tags...is this possible?
I have noticed a similar thing present on [URL]. When you submit an article to [URL], it automatically looks at the URL's <meta name="description" content="" /> in the URL HTML file. I would like to do a similar thing, but instead extract all text between all <p></p> tags.

I am building an asp.net application, using II6 on windows server 2003 (vps hosting).
I am confronted with an error I didn't receive on my development machine (windows 7, iis 7.5, 64 bit).
When my wcf service tries launching my query running against a local sql server this is the error I receive:
Memory gates checking failed because the free memory (43732992 bytes) is less than 5% of total memory. As a result, the service will not be available for incoming requests. To resolve this, either reduce the load on the machine or adjust the value of minFreeMemoryPercentageToActivateService on the serviceHostingEnvironment config element.

I have both VS 2005 and 2008 installed on my machine. 2005 is fine. For 2008, literally any asp.net project I try to create gets this eror. I try stepping into the code, and the error occurs apparently before anything that I can trap is loaded. There is no information written to the event log. I have tried this with a "Hello World" webpage with nothing else going on. Seems unique to my Windows Server 2003 machine.

I am maintaining C# .NET code written by somebody else, I get following exception few times,Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corruptThe code structure where I get the above exception is somethign like this,- it is using ref variables in following sequence,Variable-1 and variable-2 are local variables in App1, - App1: func1() which passes these variables reference to func2(), - App1: func2() passes same variables reference via .net remoting to another application (App2).-App2: does the same passes same received reference to another call 2 times.- The execption is occured while returning from App2.
(App1:func1(ref Var1, ref Var2) --> App1:func2(ref Var1, ref Var2) <---App1 .net remoting to App2--> App2:func3(ref Var1, ref Var2)--> App2:func4(ref Var1, ref Var2)-->variables getting updated and function returned to original caller)
My doubts are ,1. Is passing reference variables in such chain is correct? will it cause such exeption? Does .net support ref variable call directly?

I have a GridView tied to an XmlDataSource to take advantage of the edit/update/delete capabilities GridView inherently offers. XmlDataSource offers no update event handling so that must be performed manually. I have no problem with this. My problem is how/where can I catch this update event to perform my custom handling.

I have a memory leak somewhere that I cant find. Every few days my server will crash, and just before that I log a ton of SQL errors stating that it is "out of memory".
I cant find it anywhere, all of my connections are being disposed like so:
[Code]....
Then I call the connection from my pages like so:[Code]....
That is all pretty straight forward. The connection is disposed because it is implementing the USING clause. I am opening the connection in my connection manager class, and not where it is being utilized?Or, could the problem be in the below method I am using to populate a SqlDataReader:[Code]....
Now, at first it appears as though this could be the problem because the Connection isn't part of a USING clause, however doesn't the 'Data.CommandBehavior.CloseConnection' pretty much do the same thing. This makes sure that the connection is closed when the reader is closed, right? Here is how I call that above reader from my login page code behind:[Code]....
So the DataReader will get closed even without the .Close() because it is in the USING, and the connection should get closed because I specified it in the ExecuteReader paramters right?

We installed a web site on a developer's system (me, actually) which web site has been installed on six or seven Server 2003 systems. As the subject says, my system is XP, running IIS 5.1. The problem is that the Session object seems to be missing. Certainly, the stuff we store in there, one perfectly normal string, can't be found by any of the pieces of the website that want it. (It get's stored in the login script. It's the name the user logged in with.)We've tried both SQLServer and StateServer with the same results. When using SQL, the SQL Profiler shows activity against the SQLState database (TempSessions table). So something is being stored, but nobody can find it. (And I can't see from the SQL Profiler just what's being stored. The SessionItemShort field is being updated, but I can't tell with what.)

I'm trying to run a trace with Sql Server Profiler against an Asp.NET Website Application running in Visual Studio development server.
However, whenever the trace is running, all db requests from the web application fails giving me the error message:
"Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding."
If I stop the trace, the web application works again.

I'm trying to run the performance wizard on an ASP.Net website. However, whenever I try to start it I get the following error.
"The website contains unexpected information or you do not have permission to access the metabase. You must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer to access the IIS matabase. Therefore, you cannot create or open a local IIS website. If you have Read, Write, and Modify Permissions for the folder where the files are located, you can create a file system website that points to the folder in order to proceed"
I am an Administrator on my machine. Tried googling but came up with nothing. Anyone run it before and know how to deal with it?

Is it safe to assume that the thread count of 107 means, that web application needed at a peek a maximum of 107 concurrent threads to handle incoming requests?

I think I have a problem that I never noticed before. I was just recently (as in tonight) shown the SQL Server Profiler. I noticed that on a video that I watched there profiler did not move unless there was a query to the database, thus making it easy to see what exactly was going on. When I opened mine for the first time and ran it I am getting 9 logs every say 5 seconds. They consist of;
Audit Logout
RPC:Completed
Audit Login
RPC:Completed
RPC:Completed
SQL: BatchStarting
SQL: BatchCompleted
SQL: BatchStarting
SQL: BatchCompleted
Does anyone know if this is normal or my database just working way to hard?
I just restarted the server and checked databases for active connections now that I know nothing is running, and found the one database that is causing the problem... ReportServer has 4 connections after my restart. Should I leave this alone? Is it normal to have this reporting constantly going on?
