Javascript - Visually Format Remote Server XML Query Response?
Feb 9, 2011
I'll preface this by stating I am a rank amateur when it comes to web dev.
I have a web appliance that provides XML data when issued a query string such as:
[URL]
I created a simple form that allows users to modify values of this query and have the appropriate XML returned. Here is that form:
<form id= "report" action="https://mysite.com/api/reporting.ns?" name="report">
Username: <input name="username"><br />
Password: <input type="password" name="password"><br />
<input type="hidden" name="generate_report" value="SupportSession">
Start Date: <input name="start_date">
<input type="hidden" name="duration" value="0">
<input type="hidden" name="limit" value="all">
<input type="submit" value="Show Report">
What I have not been able to accomplish is formatting that XML response so it looks pretty.
I have created an XSLT that formats the XML nicely and have used javascript to transform the XML using the XSLT like this:
function loadXMLDoc(dname)
{
if (window.XMLHttpRequest)
{
xhttp=new XMLHttpRequest();
}
else
{
xhttp=new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");
}
xhttp.open("GET",dname,false);
xhttp.send("");
return xhttp.responseXML;
}
function displayResult()
{
xml=loadXMLDoc("Report.xml");
xsl=loadXMLDoc("Report.xsl");
// code for IE
if (window.ActiveXObject)
{
ex=xml.transformNode(xsl);
document.getElementById("content").innerHTML=ex;
}
// code for Mozilla, Firefox, Opera, etc.
else if (document.implementation && document.implementation.createDocument)
{
xsltProcessor=new XSLTProcessor();
xsltProcessor.importStylesheet(xsl);
resultDocument = xsltProcessor.transformToFragment(xml,document);
document.getElementById("content").appendChild(resultDocument);
}
}
Which works locally but I run up against the cross domain security problem as the web appliance is hardened and I am not able to place any code on it.
I have been searching this site and the web for a couple days looking for a method to accomplish this using other means [asp?] and have been largely unsuccessful. The main reason this is so is that I don't know asp so I'm not sure how to attack it.
I think creating the query string in a form, then loading the resulting xml response from the web appliance to a string and applying the XSLT that resides on the server to it might be an option but haven't been able to make it work; again because I'm not really sure what I'm doing.
Here is my XSLT:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">
<xsl:template match="/">
<div class="contentBox"> -->
[Code].....
Further information:
I found a way in asp to retrieve remote xml that works for URL's like http://site.com/file.xml but doesnt work for my URL. Maybe because it is a query? I've looked at way to encode/encapsulate my URL but haven't found anything that works.
[URL]

I'm using an .ashx handler to retrieve an image file... It queries a local database, which retrieves the URL of an image which is hosted on Amazon S3.
But I can't use context.response.write(AmazonS3URL) because it returns the error '...is not a virtual path'.
Can context.response.write only return files that are on the local machine? Or is there another function to call remote files?

I am planning to build a custom web application in ASP.NET 4.0 using WF 4.0, the user wants ability to modify workflows himself, for this we will be using a WPF client which the user can use and we will do workflow re-hosting, lots of blogs and guidance is available for this. But I am not sure how to the meet one requirement where the user wants to see/track a visual representation (diagram/image) of the workflow, depicting what stages are over, what is the current stage etc. This needs to be done on a web page.Possibly the same workflow with icons depicting status. This is something similar to the visual available for Visio workflows in SharePoint 2010. Even AgilePoint workflows provide such a view.

But when I open the CSV in Excel, it is showing in exponential format.
Something like this: 7E+18

I set up Entity Framework for my Table and Stored Procedure to return data. Created a Domain Class as well.
In Domain Class, I am returning Objects as collection.
On .Aspnet page when I drop a Control(Combo,Dropdown) I can set up the source for the controls visually if the source is table.
However, In domain class I have stored precedure object that return collection of data And I cant not set up visually from Designer, I am only available to write code behind. is it possibble that i can set up from desingner.

I have to provide a 508-compliant version of a page for the visually impaired and it isn't practical to just modify the page. Thus, I have created a new "reader-compatible" version of the page for the handicapped. The question is how I can tell if someone is using a reader rather than a standard browser? Is there a "header" or "useragent" value typically used by these non-standard browsers that I can look for?

I have a web service hosted on a web server, I invoke the web service using jquery ajax.
The service returns results successfully when invoked locally from the server, but it fails when invoked from a remote client machine (not in the same domain).
I see the request fail in the firebug returning error (401 UnAuthorized) and the response has the following error (Request format is unrecognized for URL unexpectedly ending in '/List').

I have a webservice that sends the response back in XML format.I'm able to connect and call the webservice adding an external web reference to the Visual Studio project.Then in my code behind:As New servicename_addedLabel1.Text = servicename_added.Functionexposed(param1, param2, etc)With that code I can get the response in a large label and unstructured data. If I "view source" I see the XML structured data.I have tried to create an XML document without success.My goal is to parse the response and write it to a database separating all the fields.

I have a simple webservice that I would like to upload a file to. The problem is that I need the response in json.
Form my experience in order to get a response in Json my request has to have a content-type of 'application/json'. But ofcourse this cannot be the case with a file upload since the content type will have to be 'multipart/form-data'.
In my Json i want to return a value showing whether successful and a filename.

I have created web pages using VS Web Developer that use a local Developer Edition of SQL server database on my PC with LINQ to SQL. When I deploy my website to a remote web host SQL server, I need for my web pages to be able to use the remote database instead of the local database. So, how do I get the Server Explorer to connect with a remote SQL Server database?

I am using Sql Server 2008 to connect to a Remote Server. Everything was working fine for the last couple of months, and i was successfully connecting to the remote server. Today it suddenly stopped connecting to the remote server. note that i did not alter any configuration settings. Did my isp block Sql Server. My ISP is using ISA SERVER? The error details are:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider) I am using Microsoft Firewall Client For ISA Server for opening ports. But today nothing is working.

I have a web page where I redirect the user to if I see that IP is not valid. I want that user's browser will get no response but kept into waiting state, but I also want that my server thread is not blocked for that request. So the idea was that server will response quickly but the user' browser will put into waiting loop to discourage the user. How can I achieve this easily? Is it possible without JavaScript?

I have a page that is used to add info from a gridview into a user's profile. I have explained my issues after all of the code. Here is the applicable code(s) involved:
Protected Sub AddToCart(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As CommandEventArgs)
For Each gvr In GridViewItems.Rows
Dim txtGiftAmt As TextBox = (CType(gvr.FindControl("txtGiftAmt"), TextBox))
If txtGiftAmt.Visible = True Then
Dim customPrice As String = txtGiftAmt.Text.ToString
'HERE is where I would like to set the new price variable value somehow
End If
Next
Dim scart As New ShoppingCart
scart.AddCartItem(e.CommandArgument.ToString())
Response.Redirect("~/ShoppingCart.aspx")
End Sub
This sub is called by the following button when clicked:
[Code]....
Here is the sub from the ShoppongCart Class named AddCartItem:
[Code]....
Here is the problem that I am having: I have one specific item that allows user's to define their own price (for this item only). By putting this price in a session variable seems to be the easiest way to handle this (at least for me), but the session variable's value always "lags behind". By this I mean that the first time the items is entered, it uses the default value of cartItem.ItemPrice. The second time the same item is added (with the intention of a different price), this new item's cartItem.ItemPrice is set
as the first session("customPrice").
Because the user is selecting his/her own price for this item, I am not worried about lack of security involved with using query string to pass this price, but I can't get the string passed to the ShoppingCart class correctly (shows up null). Is there a way to append this customPrice to the current page's query string before the Response.Redirect takes place? If I understand this correctly, the Response portion "posts back" to the current page before the Redirect sends us on our merry way, right?
