Long Text Is Truncated When Passed To Web Service
Jan 20, 2011
I have got an external application(Serena Business Mashups), SBM is a business management tool and we are using as a defect tracker.
it has got a web service to do database operations.
I need to update a field on this system using their web service, the data I need to update is a long(110000 chars) string.
so when I invoke the update method, the data gets updated but it is truncated. I have pasted my web config setting below. So is there a limitation which I do not know?
I am using asp.net web services, not WCF.
<system.serviceModel>
<bindings>
<basicHttpBinding>
<binding name="aewebservices71" closeTimeout="01:00:00" openTimeout="01:00:00"
receiveTimeout="01:00:00" sendTimeout="01:00:00" allowCookies="false"
bypassProxyOnLocal="false" hostNameComparisonMode="StrongWildcard"
maxBufferSize="2147483647" maxBufferPoolSize="524288" maxReceivedMessageSize="2147483647"
messageEncoding="Text" textEncoding="utf-8" transferMode="Buffered".....

I have a service. I have an existing class of business objects. What I would like to know is how can I pass a class through WCF from the business object assembly without having to create a new class in my WCF site while appending or tags?

I'm looking into building an ASP.NET MVC application that exposes (other than the usual HTML pages) JSON and XML REST services, as well as Web Sockets. In a perfect world, I would be able to use the same URLs for the Web Sockets interface as I do for the other services (and determine which data to return by what the user agent requests) but, knowing that IIS wasn't built for persistent connections, I need to know if there's a way that I can accept (and possibly even handshake) the Web Sockets connection and then pass the connection off to another service running on the server. I do have a workaround in mind if this isn't possible that basically involves using ASP.NET to check for the Web Sockets connection upgrade headers, and responding with a HTTP/1.1 302 Found that points to a different host that has my Web Sockets service configured to directly listen to the appopriate endpoint(s).

I would like to makea windows service. whenever the user of my ASP.NET application has to do a time-consuming task, the IIS would give the task to the service which will return a token(a temporary name for the task) and in the background the service would do the task. At anytime, the user would see the status of his/her task which would be either pending in queue, processing, or completed. The service would do a fixed number of jobs in parallel, and would keep a queue for the next-incoming tasks. In addition there would be a WinForms application for system administrator that would allow adding special ADMIn tasks such as "Clean orphaned files" or "archive data of inactive users".
Can you point me to something that can jump start me on this as a whole concept - I know I can google for windows services and I am able to do it myself from scratch but time is of the Essence so maybe you know of something that is already there and i can use block to build out of.

I have a long-running WCF service that I need to call, but I would like to do is to open modal window (modal popup extender) that simply shows progress and stops the user from interacting on the page until the service returns. What I was trying to do was the following:
1. Click button to activate the process which calls a method in my code-behind.
2. This method opens my modal panel with some pretty animation.
3. I call my WCF service asychronously so that the UI will refresh.
4. Service ends which calls my delegate I setup.
5. My delegate method would then refresh the page with results, and dismiss the model popup.

I would think that this would work pretty seamlessly, but I am having trouble getting the text from a textBox control in an accordion pane's content to pass into the paypal web payments https post.
If I put an amount in the querystring in my codebehind isntead of passing the text string and click the button in the accordion pane, it works perfectly on the paypal page. But for some reason, I am getting a null return in the text string when I try to make the amount in the querystring whatever the text in the textbox is.
I have tried putting the accordion in an update panel and got the same results....
Am I missing something the get the text from the textbox?
Here is my accordian pane:
<cc1:AccordionPane ID="AccordionPane1" runat="server">
<Header>
<a href="" onclick="return false;" style="color:#FFFFFF; font-weight:bold;">Donor</a>
</Header>
<Content>
<b>$150-299</b>
<asp:BulletedList ID="BulletedList2" runat="server" Font-Size="Small">
<asp:ListItem>Program Listing</asp:ListItem>
<asp:ListItem>10% Off other productions</asp:ListItem>
</asp:BulletedList>
<div style="text-align:center;">
<asp:TextBox ID="donorAmt" runat="server" Width="100" Height="15px"></asp:TextBox> <asp:LinkButton ID="LinkButton1" runat="server" Text="Make Payment Online" OnClick="LinkButton1_Click" />
<cc1:TextBoxWatermarkExtender ID="TextBoxWatermarkExtender1" runat="server" TargetControlID="donorAmt" WatermarkText="Your Amount" WatermarkCssClass="accTextWM" />
</div>
</Content>
</cc1:AccordionPane>
Here is how I am getting the text string in codeBehind:
Protected Sub LinkButton1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)
Dim amt As String = donorAmt.Text
Response.Redirect("https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_donations&business=XXXXXX@XXXXX.org&amount=" & amt & "&no_note=0&item_name=ALT Donor Level Annual Membership&sra=1¬ify_url=http://XXXXX.com/IPN.aspx&no_shipping=0&return=http://www.XXXXXX.com/donate/thanks.aspx&rm=2")
End Sub
Note: Some of the paypal string has been removed for privacy

Wondering if there is a performance difference between letting a long running process hang in asp.net vs running the process via a windows service. I have done this once before and the windows service was much quicker and didnt bog down my system, whereas the asp.net request seemed to wreak havoc.

Frameworks like Node.js, Tornado, and Twisted let developers create server-push applications that supports large number of concurrent hanging requests (10k+). From what I understand, they all achieve this by not creating threads to service each hanging request.
Can AsyncController be used to service large number of inactive concurrent requests?If so, are there any reasonably large ASP.NET MVC websites using this approach to create long-poll applications?

I have a web application where users are permitted to submit their resumes. When the form is submitted, the data is inserted into a new record in an SQL table. One of the fields in the form allows them to copy and paste their entire resume text into a TextBox control, which is inside the InsertItemTemplate of a FormView. This particular control is bound to a column in the SQL table that's of datatype nvarchar(MAX). It works, but there are no line breaks and when viewed the resume is just one long continuous block of text. How can I change this so that line breaks are preserved? Do I need to use something like a "cute editor" control? And finally, how do I protect against malicious code? The insert query is parameterized, and the FormView refers to an insert method in a TableAdapter in my dataset.

I have a long text in SQL and passing it to a gridview. I am trying to make the gridview result display in a multiline scroll. I have tried the following code but to no avail. Additionally, the text in the gridview result is not in the same format as where it came from, eg. Word. That is the format such as bullet points and multiple spaces are removed. So what is left is a lenghty long string.

I have an aplication in asp.net MVC and using telerik grid for displaying the record. Now one of my field has some large text about 1000 character due to which the text is getting extended vertically and layout is not looking good.
Is there any way to show some specific number of character in the column and show the whole text in a tool tip on mouse hover or any other way to show the complete text for that column.

In my website, there is a page called "SMS Log"It contains a GridView, in which there are 5 columns:
1) SMS sent time
2) SMS Text
3) Recipients
4) status
5) Button (view detail) since, "SMS Text" is large and "Recipients" are more than 1.
So Gridview looks very conjusted, also it does not look good.Is there any other control I can use other than Gridview to show above 5 columns in a well organized way.

I've developed a web application to accept video file uploads and then pass them to a backend service on an external server. The application runs without error on the visual studio debugging webserver, but once on a production iis 6 or 7 server, yields a timeout error at about a consistent amount of time into handling a large upload. Specifically, it errors in the middle of transferring the video file to the external server, once the application has successfully received it from the client. I'm aware of several timeouts to be configured related to the problem, and have done so. The application's web config has been tested with one or both of the following settings
<system.web>
<httpRuntime executionTimeout="9999999" maxRequestLength="2048000" />
</system.web>
and
<configuration>
<location path="default.aspx"> (the page at issue that's timing out)
<system.web>
<httpRuntime executionTimeout="9999999" maxRequestLength="2048000" />
</system.web>
</location>
</configuration>
And within the initialization of the webrequest made to the external server to send the video received from the client browser:
HttpWebRequest httpWebRequest = (HttpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(url);
httpWebRequest.ContentType = "multipart/form-data; boundary=" + boundary;
httpWebRequest.Method = "POST";
httpWebRequest.Timeout = System.Threading.Timeout.Infinite;
So with the execution time limits on both the webform as a whole and the connection made to the external server, I'm at a loss for what timeout is left unconfigured, or how to determine such, when I continue to get the following error: Unexpected error executing Brightcove Upload:...........................

I am working on a website hosted with GoDaddy, SQL Server 2005. I have a table in my SQL Server database with a full-text index. On my website, a user can type in search terms and the terms are then passed to a stored procedure in the database which performs the search. The first search takes about 45 seconds to get results. Subsequent searches return results immediately. I found a description of this problem in a Microsoft knowledgebase article:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/915850/en-usGoDaddy tech support says I need to purchase a dedicated server to make the changes suggested in this article.Surely there is some other solution. Does anyone know how to avoid this delay without changing the server configuration?

in my case, It is the windows service which in running the long running insert/update on a table and I need to cancel the operation from my ASP.NET application. In the above link Burnsys suggests that one should kill the Sql server session. Is that really only way and a goood practice to do this? Also, in the same poset can use SqlCommand.Cancel to cancel. However, I am not sure how can I cancel the command from the windows service from ASP.NET application.

I have an application I am trying to write that generates a text file conforming to a file specification, and the file could contain thousands of lines. This part is easy. The more challenging part for me is the user interface. It needs to be a web interface with various options to affect what data gets on the file; this part is no problem. The process for generating the file, though, could take a little time depending on the amount of data , and I would think the web page would time out.
What options do I have for the UI? Could I create some sort of service that the page calls and runs in the background? When the process errors or is finished, I'm thinking there could be an email sent out, or even messages displayed on the page.
