View 2 RepliesWe have an ASP.NET 3.5 Web application in which we have faced the below issue:
The application is working fine but suddently at one point application URL prompts for the authentication. When we (the support team) checked the server, we were able to identify that the access was denied for some of the main files (like web.config, default page). When we enabled the access the application started working fine.
I'm creating a web application using asp.net & WCF as 3 tier architecture, which is mostly looks like a social website. Users can register with the system and they can upload their profile images, documents, video clips etc. So, what i want to know is what is the best way to store those files? In the wcf side or web application side ?
Also I want to know that, if i choose web application side to store those files as set of folders, how it makes those folders shared and allow access to another different project (such as a desktop client need to upload files into that shared folder) ?
How to upload files from ASP.NET web application to any web server(linux)..
View 2 RepliesCurrently I have a large number of xls files that are being shared over a network share. These files are have a copyright on them and have logic embedded in them to manage sales information. Because of the copyright, I can't extract the logic out of them and build an application.
I would like to know if there is a way to develop or purchase a control/app that will allow these xl files to be hosted via a website.
the web server would provide an html front end to manipulate the the xl sheet that resides on the server.
Users need to have the ability to modify the file and then save back their changes to the xl sheet (on the server)
I really don't want to give the users the option to SAVE AS either. That will cause the xl sheets to become decentralized and remain on everyones computer.
I'm creating a web application where the users can upload and download files. In the past, I've usually done so by saving the files as binary in a sql database. I did this because, this way, I know which files belong to which users (based on an ID). How would I do this if I plan on saving the files on the HDD? I figure I would create a unique folder per user (and I would save their files there), but I'm wondering what the standard or better way of approaching this.
View 3 RepliesI need to add this feature to a web application: - load files - open a Windows Explorer windowTo load files I would like to have an interface similar to the ones seen in Web FTPs with two windows one with the folder where the fiels are located, and another with the fillder and files where the files will be upload
The second to open a window, is for a person who wants to see the attached documents related to a record.
Recently I was working on displaying workflow diagram images in our web application. I managed to use the rehosted WF designer and create images on-the-fly on the server, but imagining how large the workflow diagrams can very quickly become, I wanted to give a better user experience by using some ajax control for displaying images that would support zoom & pan functionality.
I happened to come across the website of seadragon, which seems to be just an amazing piece of work that I could use. There is just one disadvantage - in order to use their library for generating deep zoom versions of images I have to use the file structure on a server. Because of the temporary nature of the images I am using (workflow diagrams with progress indicators), it is important to not only be able to create such images but also to get rid of them after some time.
Now the question is how can I best ensure that the temporary image files and the folder hierarchy can be created on a server (ASP.NET web app), and later cleaned up. I was thinking of using the cache functionality and by the expiration of the cache item delete the corresponding image folder hierarchy, or simply in the Application_Start and Application_End of Global.asax delete the content of the whole temporary folder, but I'm not really sure whether this is a good idea and whether there are some security restrictions or file-system-related troubles. What do you think ?
I am building a website where i need a page where user can upload large video files, i have created WCF service with streaming but i am calling that WCF service from Button_Click event of web page.
I have used below mentioned article for WCF service creation
WCF Streaming
I have used streaming as it should be efficient and should not be buffered in memory of server.
Now questions
1) I am having doubts that the entire file is uploaded to the web server and then it is transferred to WCF Service server...if this is true then i am not getting advantage of streaming as well as iis and web server will be down very soon if user uploads large file or multiple user are uploading files con currently
2) Is there any other efficient way to do same operation with some other technique
EDIT :
If I am not calling WCF Service method from ASP .Net code in that case also it is transferring bytes to the web server which i have checked with HTTPFox
I have checked above thing with upload control and putting one button on UI whose click event is bound to one method in code behind.
So, still i am having that confusion that how data is transferred
Client Machine - Web Server (ASP .Net Application) - Service Server (WCF Service)
Client Machine - Service Server (WCF Service)
NOTE : If i am putting a debug point on button_click and uploading 10 kb file it hits that in less then 1 sec. but if i am uploading 50 mb file then it is taking time.
I placed code of calling WCF service inside that button_click event
We have a business application where users can upload documents and where admins later review them. These admins want to print these documents, preferably by just ticking checkboxes in the file list form and clicking a "print button".
My problem is how to append the different documents, which of course can be of different formats, and send them to a printer in one go. I am currently thinking of converting them into a common format (like xps of pdf, or even good old PostScript) and send that file out. I have not yet found any conversion tools though.
Has anyone had any experience in these matters, and if so, what were your conclusions? Are there any good conversion tools out there, or am I going in the wrong direction?
I have a folder in my application (UploadsFolder) in which I've been adding images I use for y application. Is it possible to add more images to this folder programmatically online?
View 3 RepliesWhy is visual studio locking my files even when application is not running? The files are not under any source control or readonly either. Before this it didn't allow me to edit the aspx.vb while debugging, though I can do that in other projects.
View 9 RepliesI have a number of XSLT files in my ASP.NET Web Application solution. Should these go in the App_Data folder?
The MSDN 'Project Folder Structure' article suggests that the App_Data folder is for 'data files'. As XSLT files are not strictly 'data files' then should they go elsewhere?
I do not want end users to be able to access the XSLT files from their browsers, so App_Data seems like an obvious location for this, but I am not sure.
We are working on a web application that creates more web applications. Each web application will have to get a Url Rewrite rule (URL REWRITE MODULE 2.0).As far as I know, there's no way to add such rules without modifying the web.config file (am I right??).So my plan was to work with multiple web.config partial files. One main .config file, and lots of .config files per application (every file will contain it's web application url rewrite rules). This way sounds a little bit messy, but I can't think of anything else, and suggestions will be welcomed.
View 1 RepliesWe are trying to compress JS and CSS files in our application which is Running IIS 7.5. Both JS and CSS files are getting compressed
But application is not able to load these compressed .JS and .CSS files it is still referring to old un compressed files.
Just for your info Compress JS and CSS Files are at C:inetpub empIIS Temporary Compressed FilesDefaultAppPool$^_gzip_C^.
Here are the setting which i have in AppHost.config file

View 7 RepliesI need to get data from a database and I need to spit out this data in html formatk using my command line app. For this I am planning to use some sort of template-engine. I was wondering if there is anything in .NET that can do this for me?
The best option would be if I could reuse the asp.net mvc template engine (razor) in my app, this way I should not need to reinvent the wheel.
i am having problem uploading files to the application. When i click on the upload button, it does not upload the already selected file.

View 4 RepliesI want to publish my web application as a single .dll file without all the source code and .aspx markup pages.
I am using VS 2010 with the "Web Deployment Project" add-in. In the compilation settings, I unchecked "make this site updatable" because I want the .aspx files to be compiled as well.
Publishing my web application using the publish feature in VS 2010 works fine, and a single .dll file is created in the "bin" directory.
But all the .aspx markup files are still copied to the web server! I've read that those files are merely marker files which can be deleted, but not in my case. They still contain the whole markup and when I delete them, my application won't run anymore.
It's like I had checked the "make this site updatable" option, but I haven't!

let me know that what is the advantages / benefits of using multiple web.config files in web application

View 2 RepliesMy ASP.NET application logs transactions (both inside AND outside of databases), and therefore needs read/write access to text files within various directories within the root of the website - in ADDITION to the normal database access.
In this scenario, how can I safely allow my ASP.NET application to write data to the web folders? I have a thread-safe DLL that performs the actual work, so I don't believe I need to worry about multiple sessions writing to the log files at the exact same time - assuming my DLL will only be running in a single instance/process that will be shared between numerous ASP.NET instances/processes/threads.
But I'm more concerned about file access permissions. I've heard that ASP.NET applications generally aren't allowed access to the webserver's local file system, and that this may even restrict my DLL from getting the correct file access. Can I grant my application file-access to the web-driectories?
