Masterpage - Accessing Pager Public Properties In Child Page
Sep 28, 2010
I'm embarrassed to ask this here because it's clearly been duplicated several times already on StackOverflow. I've read a lot of stuff including:
[URL]
I think I've done exactly what those article say, but it's not working for me.
Here's the top of my master page, named "MasterNoNews.master":
[code]....
In the first case, VS is telling me System.Web.Ui.MasterPage does not contain a definition for urrentUser. In the second case, VS says the type or namespace 'MasterNoNews' could not be found.

Can anyone give me an idea how to go about this? I've tried searching but most articles talk in the context of web controls...

In my application, I use nested master pages. In the main.master which is the top level, all encompossing master page, I have some properties. I want to set the value of this property from a user control embedded into the page which is using master page which is embedded into main.master. To clarify further, here's the hierarchy
main.master
content.master
some_page.aspx
myUserControl.ascx
The property is mpProperty1 which is in main.master. How do I access and set the value of this property from my user control?

I have a main MasterPage that, as intended, forms the entire layout of my site. It has a bunch of methods common to all pages that use the mastertype, such as EnsureLoggedIn and such.
I want to move on to using nested masterpages to open up better layout options in some of the pages, but I am running into an issue. I get the layout of the nested masterpages fine, but I cannot access any methods in the parent masterpage.
I know my explanation seems a little sparse; I'm not exactly sure how to word what I'm looking for, heh. But here's a short example:

Here's the scenario: A class based on System.Web.UI.Page has been created. A number of content pages derive from this class. All of these content pages use the same master page. The content pages define controls which need to access things on the master page (in code-behind). This is fine - no problem. In particular, each content page has its own data grid. The grid on each page has the same name, so that common code can reference it. In fact, some event handling for the grids on each content page is identical, so would like to factor that code to the base class. Interestingly, I can actually define the event handler entirely in the base class, with no stub in the content class at all, because the wire-up of event handlers uses the event-handler name defined in the grid, and that name happens to be found in the inherited base class. All good and dandy... very cool in fact. The problem comes when the code in the base class needs to access any of the common elements from the content page's master. Remember, the master is the same, and I know the type of the master. I would like to do something like this in the base-class code:
((myMasterType)this.Master).PropertyofMaster=xxx;
The problem is, that myMasterType - the type of the master page the content pages are using - is not available at compile time, at least not from a class definition for a base page. I've found articles that claim that the class name of the master is available - and it is, but not from a separate class. I CAN see it and compile with the master's class name from, for example, the code behind of the various content pages. But the actually class simply isn't available, it seems, from a pure class (the base page class). Judging from other times this question has been asked, here are common misunderstandings offered as solutions: 1. Use a page directive to declare the master type. This is not even vaguely a part of the problem, as the issue is not code in the content page, but in a separate base class which content pages inherit from. That base class is a pure class -- no .ASPX file at all. 2. Pass a reference to the master object from the content page to the base class. This can be done, but is pointless, because I can already get it, using "this.Master" from the base class! But because the type of the master is not available at compile time from the base class, it can't be passed from the content page either - unless it is passed with type MasterPage, thus losing all the properties/methods publically defined in the specific master page class. 3. Move the base page class out of the App_Code folder because the app_code folder is compiled before the other classes, and thus before the master page class. Doesn't work -- put the master page class file right in the same folder with these content pages and their master page, and the master page class is still not available at compile time from within the class. Re-summarized: Base page inherited by content pages. Content pages all use a common master page. Want to access the public properties of that master page from the base page, at runtime. Barrier is that I can find no way from within the base class to cast the master page object to the actual master page subclass being used.

My UI layer calls my business layer which populates a DTO. I need to display properties from the DTO on my ASPX page. Should I create public variables on the code behind page for each of the DTO properties and reference like <%=PublicPropertyName%> OR is it ok to set the DTO instance to public and reference the properties directly like <%=dtoInstance.propertyName%>
Additionally, would it be better if I just created Literal and Label controls for every item on the ASPX page and just populate them from the code behind only?

what's the DIV equivalent to this command?
((Panel)this.Page.Master.FindControl("Panel1")).Style.Add("display", "none");
This works great with a panel but I can't find the variation for doing the same thing with a DIV who's ID I know.

masterpage with a contentPlacholder multiple pages which use this masterpage and implement a base-class (fooPage) fooPage has a certain property (fooProperty)
[Code]....
Obviously this is not going to work - but how can I achieve this?
I know the alternative: call a method from the masterPage in the contentPage with fooProperty as a parameter - but i would like to rather have a pull-system in this case...

I have a some javascript code that I only want to run in one child page but it needs to be in the head tag to function correctly.
<script type='text/javascript' src=[URL] ></script>
<script type='text/javascript' src=[URL]></script>
<script type='text/javascript' src='lightview/lightview.js'></script>
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="lightview/lightview.css" />
end code
Can anyone tell me how to do this? I cannot put it straight into the master page as it conflict with some other javascript code that I am running on a different page! And I cannot put it into the body of the child page because it does not function correctly.

accessing a table on a page's masterpage.
So I have a sitemaster page and I am getting header and footer controls from it. But for a perticular page I would like not to show the footer and just the header.
Therefore, I am trying to access the master page table control with id "footer".
What I have tried and they all didnt work. First I tried,
Dim ptrMaster As MasterPage = Page.Master
ptrMaster.FindControl("footer").Visible = False
This gives me a null pointer error.
Then I tried to put in a accessor method on the site.master (masterpage) itself.
Public Sub HideFooter()
Me.Controls("footer").Visible = False
End Sub
But the problem here is when I create a masterpage object on the page that I would like to not show the footer. I cant see the method. So if I do
Dim ptrMaster As MasterPage = Page.Master
ptrMaster.HideFooter()
HideFooter doesnt show up as a method.

I have a ASP.NET C# 3.5 web application, where I am changing the masterpage & theme for certain pages that have ASP.NET controls. The problem is that when the masterpage/theme is changed, the ASP.NET ImageButtons on the child page cease to function altogether and show up as normal images. The html source for that page would show a disabled="disabled" field added to the ImageButtons at runtime. All other controls including ASP.NET Buttons work fine, only ImageButtons are effected. I've changed masterpages in files many times and have not come across this problem, probably because I rarely use ImageButtons. I'm beginning to think it may be a bug in .NET itself, but it could be code related. I've also executed a javascript function after
load to set the disabled field to "enabled", which has no effect on the ImageButton but the source confirms it is enabled. The MasterPages / Child Pages are relatively straight forward and I've tried many different combinations to get it working. I'm changing the masterpage & theme via a function like:
public static void ChangeMaster(System.Web.UI.Page page)
{
page.MasterPageFile = "~/GX.Master";
page.Theme = null;
}

Senario: Masterpage with a UserControl and a child ASPX page
In the past when using this senario I've used an Interface as a way to pass a value from the UserControl (embedded in a master page) to the masterpage code behind then consume that value in the child aspx page.
My question is now that asp.net 4 have arrived is this still a good way to achieve this or is there another or perhaps better way to do it? I've read somewhere that perhaps "delegates" is perhaps another route to take.

I've got a composite control (class) that exposes an asp:Label through a get-property. Is is possible to set the Text property of the Label through aspx-code?
I'd like to do something like this:
<cfw:MyCompositeControl runat="server" Label.Text="Test" />
One solution is adding each property to the composite class (like a public LabelText), but I'd like to set any property of any child control. So as new features of child controls become available, I'd like to be able to use them on my composite control. So basically I would like to set any property of the exposed child control.

I have a problem i am trying to work out the best method with my limited skills. Im using vb.net(VS 2010) I am using a dll for an IFrame , which is call from code behind. On my site I havea masterpage which has two gridviews. ( GrdViewWebBureau is the one i am using for this query) GrdViewWebBureau is contained within an update panel and updated on a timer control trigger. GrdViewWebBureau updates the page with file counts and status from our clients. I can click on any one of the cells and the code behind is fired. What I am trying to do is put an IFrame on the master page and every time a user clicks on the grid, the Iframe is fired up.
I have tested the iframe and vb code behind from a dummy page and it works, however when the Iframe is on the master page it doeant work. What I am tryingh to achieve is that no matter what page a user is on the site, they will be able to click on the GrdViewWebBureau and the iframe will fire with the correct childpage. Each webPage may also have an Iframe as well, so i dont know if it is possible to make the IFrame global and just call that control ?? I have no idea if 1 this is possible with the code i have and 2, if i have the brains to understand the who what why and when.

I am just starting out with ASP.net and C#.
I have a master page that contains the main site navigation and a child master page that contains a secondary menu. I want to set the starting node on the secondary menu based on the selection on the main menu.
I can get the code to work when the menus are on the same page, but when I separate them into their respective master pages, I get an error saying "The name 'SiteMapDataSource2' does not exist in the current context".
I have tried playing around with the FindControl() method, but either it won't work or I'm not getting the syntax right. Most of the information I find is for a child page referencing the master page, but not the other way around.
How can I access the SiteMapDataSource2 control from the master page? If possible, can you include the exact syntax as I am still trying to get the hang of this.
Here is a basic representation of my code, with all of the uncessary stuff stripped out:
Master Page
[Code]....
Master Page Codebehind
[Code]....
Child Page
[Code]....

I have a MasterPage in my project which it contains a FormView and the FormView is databound with a Connection String to a SQL DataBase.
This FormView is selecting users information from Database, when the ContentPage is loading, Im trying to get the information from the FormView of MasterPage and load them in Content Page, but it is not working fine for me.
For Example:
In MasterPage I have a FormView such as follow:
Name: Amir
LastName:Zandi
Username:amirzandi
In ContentPage, I have a Label and I want to get the name from MasterPage and replace it with the text of the Label.
I am doing this at PageLoad of Content Page with the Following Code:
[code]...
At the page load of ContentPage, it says that it could not find the FormView1
but after I refresh the page, it works fine.
is there anyway for me to ask the FormView in MasterPage to DataBind and After that, it retrieves the Data from FormView and place them into the ContentPage.
I also tried: fv.databind() but it is not working.

I have a masterpage and 1 childpage. In master page there is a listbox to present a data when a child page button is clicked. Listbox name is x1 for example.
When i am in childpage's button click event: i do not see that x1 named listbox due to namespace i guess.
For example masterpage name is masterpage1. When we are in childpage in button click event.
To try masterpage1 objecttemp = new masterpage1()
button1_Click() (child pages button click event)
masterpage.x1.items.add("button 1 clicked"); it is not being able to reachable too.
Also i encountered another issue related to that. When in masterpage for example masterpages click event. (its a login panel and when user clicks login, i had wanted to add a text information to listbox). In child pages when user clicks to login button which belongs masterpage top panel. It does not seem like working. It may be related to asp page master child life cycle and i do not know good. I wanted to able to add a string to listbox that belongs and come from masterpage in child page. Is there any way to use a datacontrol in childpage that belongs to masterpage.

I have a MasterPage (MasterPage.master) with 2 child MasterPages (specialMaster.master and standardMaster.master). From the MasterPage.master I need to get at some of the controls in one of the children, specialMaster.master, say for example to hide certain

I have a button on a masterpage, which when clicked, calls a method that takes an EventHandler previously saved to the viewstate, this method is on the client page, and executes it:
protected void Save_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
this.SaveButtonEvent += (EventHandler)ViewState["saveEvent"];
if (this.SaveButtonEvent != null)
{
this.SaveButtonEvent(sender, e);
}
}
This then calls a very simple method on the client page:
protected void Button2_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
Label1.Text = TextBox2.Text;
}
However, the value of TextBox2 is incorrect, it is the value of the text box that was set when the page loaded (or if any other item on the pages changes it), the new value is not passed.
If I add a button to the client page, that calls the Button2_Click event directly, it get's the correct value.
Is the reason I am not getting the correct value of the text box because the Event is called from the master page?
I should add, that this button is created dynamically, and the event delegate will vary, which is why I have to set it at run time. I need a way to set the delegate on a click, and persist this until it is changed again.
