just wanted to know what are the requirements to learn asp.net i mean i know that you need to know any .net language ( i am for C#). But do u need to also know xhtml, CSS and all other stuff.

I have a project using ASP.NET Forms Authentication and the Microsoft SQL Membership Provider. The website is DONE. I use this provider everywhere. (Register, Login, Forgot Password, etc...) Until now, my website users have not needed complex passwords. The users' passwords were really just pins. The user could select anything for a password in the past. I had almost no restrictions for this website because none of the data is private or personal. However I have received new requirements.
Here are the new password requirements:
Passwords must be at least 8 characters in length. Passwords must be created using 3 of the following 4 character types:
Uppercase
Lowercase
Numeric
Punctuation
Do not use your name or User ID in the password. Do not use old passwords again later. Passwords must be changed at least every 60 days. Passwords may not contain your User ID or any part of your full name. Password history retention will prohibit use of the last 24 passwords. Passwords may be changed by users only once in any 6-day period.
I realize I am going to have to modify all of the following pages: Register, Login, Forgot Password, etc... fortunately I stopped using the default controls a long time ago.
My first thought was that I need to write a Custom Membership Provider. I don't know how to make the standard provider to do most of this. I could write code to do.
Do I modify the aspnet_membership table? Should I add my own table aspnet_something? Can the user profile table be used for this problem? Do I need my own MembershipUser class?
I'm sure but for an individual at home writing web sites I assume I just want Visual Studio 2010 beta 2 and NOT team foundation server, right? What are the minimum system requirements to run this (no doubt beast)? I have a Lenovo laptop running ultimate Vista - and the hardware is Duo Core 2.5 Ghz, and 4 gig of Ram, is that enough of a machine? Last, I own VS 2005, how does the licensing work for 2010, do I pay now, later, what?

Does the client require the .NET framework to be installed to run an ASP.NET application that is using the report viewer control? It is my understanding that all ASP.NET web applications can be run from any machine and that the .NET framework only needs to be installed on the server where IIS is running. Is this correct?

View 6 RepliesIs it ok to do multiple records update with the following requirements and be safe that the operation will not get timed out? A user requiring me to do the following using a web form:
I. Display a list of accounts in a GridView for multiple records insertion with no client side validation. Each account will accept new reading and posted date values.
II. Once the user presses the submit button, the following steps will be performed for each record at server side:
1. Check if new input data is for new or old period. A checkbox is to be selected in the form.
2. Check if new data has existing related records. Else this is first time insertion; get consumption result and save to db.
3. If records found, get previous reading and date.
4. Check if new reading and date is greater than previous reading/date else should inform the user.
5. Get new consumption = new reading - previous reading and some other operation.
6. A join select statement will be used to get the lowest and highest values (consumption) for current account.
7. Compare the new consumption result with previous consumption to give a status indication for new reading as either high, low or normal to be saved into the db. (# 6 values will be used here)
8. If everything goes ok, save new data into 3 different tables.
9. Display the GridView with new data.
The SQL server and the hosted page are in two different servers.
We are trying to implment some forms written in ASP.NET 2.0 and I'm trying to understand what Windows server version requirements are needed when contacting a web hosting provider etc? I see there are many versions from 1.0, 2.0, 3.5 and 4.0 which appears to be the latest version, well as far as I can see. Therefore if we sign up for hosting services and the provider only have only version 4 will this be backward compatible to support our ASP.NET 2.0 forms?

please correct me if I am missing any other elements required to connect to a remote DB Server or Local one. If any provider is needed how do you deploy it at production server?

View 3 RepliesI'm going to be working on an application where I would like to provide an option to sync some things with quickbooks (i.e. add customer or invoice in web app, click button sync to quickbooks). I'm having trouble finding a good tutorial or sample code to use asp.net (preferably in vb.net but I can convert it) to exchange the information. I have the quickbooks sdk and the web connector installed, but I'm not sure where to start. I wanted to try to learn how the quickbooks part would work before I got to far into the app and find out the data structure was wrong.
View 7 RepliesI'm trying to implement a small server/client web service to understand the fundamentals of WCF. I've created both the client and the server and so far have them communicating with each other through a very simple getter method. I've added in a database to the server and have a LINQ to SQL connection (I'm not sure if that's the proper terminology).
What I would like to know is, where can I learn the fundamentals now, for example: returning the number of rows into the client console window and using the basic CRUD functions from the client to update the database? I don't want to go to deep to soon, as I would like a bit of a foundation to work off before it starts to get really complex.
Few months I've started learning ASP.NET MVC 1.0. Although hard in the beginning, now I've made huge progress so that I'm working on something serious I can show to my colleagues. But, now MVC 2 is almost out there. Now I would like to know if MVC 1.0 and MVC 2 are profoundly different. In fact, I wonder if I need (first) to finish what I am into or (secondly) I need to stop everything and learn first MVC 2. basically the asp.net 2.0 c# web app is quite complicated with some logic in sproc, some in the javascript via json data processing, some in user controls and some in the code behind. not to mention some libraries here and there to make it merrier. i have literally no idea how to even begin to break things down to smaller chunks to do any testing.
