Postback Before Page Fully Loaded Cause Dropdownlist To Have The Wrong SelectedValue?
Oct 18, 2010
We were having occasional reports where the value of a set of DropDownBoxs in a GridView would be reset to the first value item in the list.
We finally tracked it down to a timing issue where a user would click Save before the page finished rendering/loading the data, and we are able to repro it on the production server but not locally because the page loads too quickly.
How would we go about detecting this on the server side to know the data returned is invalid or otherwise stop from setting data that the user didn't set?

When user cliick on the control before page fully loaded it goes to error page.
Following is the trace.
Execution Error
Invalid postback or callback argument. Event validation is enabled using <pages enableEventValidation="true"/> in configuration or <%@ Page EnableEventValidation="true" %> in a page. For security purposes, this feature verifies that arguments to postback or callback events originate from the server control that originally rendered them. If the data is valid and expected, use the ClientScriptManager.RegisterForEventValidation method in order to register the postback or callback data for validation.

In page-init, view state and some other components don't get loaded. Which are they?
Why do they loaded in Page-Load only? What does the need of Page-Init then ?

Have a GridView in an UpdatePanel, all works fine. Click the Submit() button which updates the database on postback, then the GridView is bound in code and I register an alert:
ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(this.UpdatePanel1, typeof(string), "dopopup", "alert('Operation successful!');", true);
Calling UpdatePanel1.Update() causes the popup to appear. All fine but what I am noticing is that the alert occurs just before the page has fully updated and is causing a few minor layout issues that are resolved when the alert button is closed (by clicking OK). Is there a way to generate an alert after a full UpdatePanel refresh, so something like:
ScriptManager.RegisterFullyLoadedScript(this.UpdatePanel1, typeof(string), "dopopup", "alert('Operation successful!');", true);
I tried a simple wait() in the code like this:
ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(this.UpdatePanel1, typeof(string), "dopopup", "wait(100);alert('Operation successful!');", true);
But this didn't work.

I have this problem in loading contents of the site where there's a certain time that those elements that supposed to be hidden are shown for a while before the page is completely loaded.
Everything below the dropdown is supposed to be hidden and they show atleast a second that is very noticeable, that I still have the time to have a screen shot. Below is when the content is completely loaded.
Everything inside the content is inside an UpdatePanel, and I am using a jqTransform to transform the form elements. I know that jqTransform is called after all elements is loaded, but I just don't understand why it is showing the hidden elements before the page is completely loaded.
Is there any work around this one that I will only show directly the completely loaded page instead of showing the hidden elements before hiding them?
FYI: Elements hidden will be shown according to the value selected on the dropdown. If the element is hidden before the jqTransform is called, once I show them back, it is unusable or cut off.

I am struggling a little creating a basic redirect page in ASP.Net but ensure the HTML is loaded first.I tried putting Response.Redirect in the page load event but that fires before the HTML is fully loaded. Been trying to use a timer but just not doing anything.I need the HTML to load before the redirect occurs is I have a statcounter script installed to log the visit before it redirects of my site.

I am using if (document.getElementById('<%= MainImg.ClientID %>').complete) {
hideLoadDiv();
}
to hide a div which indicates the image is not loaded yet,but it hides before the image has finished loading and is shown, while the browser is giving me a message that the page is still transferring data from the server :S
Is there another function I can use to make sure that the image is fully loaded?

I have a WebForms page that has two DropDownList controls on it that both contain a range of temperatures from 60-80 degrees, one for heating the other for cooling. They are declared in the .aspx as:
<asp:DropDownList ID="heating" runat="server" />
<asp:DropDownList ID="cooling" runat="server" />
The values for each list are populated in the code-behind using:
for(int i = 60; i <= 80; i++)
{
var listItem = new ListItem(i + " degrees", i.ToString());
heating.Items.Add(listItem);
cooling.Items.Add(listItem);
}
When I try to set the selected value for each DropDownList using the values in an object containing data loaded from the database using:heating.SelectedValue = myHome.avgHeatingTemp.ToString();
cooling.SelectedValue = myHome.avgCoolingTemp.ToString();
The SelectedValue for both lists is set first to the value in myHome.avgHeatingTemp, then to the value in myHome.avgCoolingTemp. Heres what the values are for each variable after each step of the process of setting the SelectedValues:
Initial State
heating.SelectedValue: 60
cooling.SelectedValue: 60 [code]....

I have officially wasted about two days trying to figure out what the heck was going on with my asp.net page. I actually thought it was an issue with my updatepanel code, but after reading another post I was able to reproduce the same results. [URL]
I just manually added the following control to the page (no code behind for the listbox) and it is nested in an ajax tabcontrainer inside an updatepanel. If you set item 20 as selected the page flickers when loading that tab. I tried the css mentioned (style="overflow:hidden") on the tabcontainer,tab panel, update panel and dropdownlist, but no luck. Crazy select item 19 no flicker, 20 (which is actually the 21st item) and it does flicker. This is driving me insane. And yes this only occurs in FireFox ( running 3.6).

There are two dropdowns in my ASP.NET form. The second dropdown is dependent on the first dropdown - the second onedoes not have the item selected in the first one. My problems is that the selectedValue for the second dropdown is always empty after load event. I tried to set the selectedIndex to be 0 before access selectedValue property in the page load event, but it is still empty. What I want is to get the first item of the second dropdown as the default value.

I have a weird thing happening. I have two identical databases installed on one virtual machine but under two different instances of SQLServer. For some reason, periodically when saving from one it will save to the other instead. Using debug, I have verified that the connection string is correct and when the item saves, it still saves to the wrong database.I use session variable, and am of the belief that it might have something to do with it...and t hat when I go from one to the other it is still getting the connection string form the other for some reason.To make sure that it isn't a problem, I make sure that I completely close out one database before opening the other in a new IE window.I assume that when I completely close out an internet explorer window that it abandons all session states. Is that true?

In my default.aspx page I have a PlaceHolder control within an UpdatePanel. In this placeholder control I will dynamically load a web user control, which is just a form with a submit button. On this user control, I have the form within an update panel and I have the "Submit" button's Click Event added to the triggers.
When I submit the form, the UpdatePanel on the web user control nor the update panel on the default.aspx page are capturing the post back, thus causing a full post back which refreshes my page.
how to capture this post so its rendered in Ajax and not a full post back?

I binded the dropdown from the table Languages, now it shows all the languages:
ViewData("Languages") =
New SelectList(objLang,
"SysLanguageID",
"LanguageName")
Now when I click the edit then the dropdown should show the selectedvalue based on the languageId that is in stored in the Preferences table under the user.If i give the third parameter as the selectedvalue it is showing the selected value but it is not showing the other languages.

On an aspx page I have a dropdownlist and a button.
I select a value from the dropdownlist and click the button.
In the button event handler I have the statment: DropDownList1.SelectedValue;
This value is showing up as the first item in the list regardless of what item is actually selected.
Same result with .SelectedItem.Value and .Text
Why? And how do I get the item actually selected?

I have a databound dropdownlist on a page, where in the page_load I set the selectedValue (inside a 'not isPostBack').
Although the page displays fine and shows the correct item as selected.. inside the page_load if I try and get the selectedValue() and display it to the screen, I always get null... selectedIndex is -1.
I have a button, which when clicked refers to this ddl's selectedValue, and here it pulls through the the expected result.. so how come I can't see it immediately after setting it, while still in page_load?
edit: the code..
ddl declaration
<asp:DropDownList runat="server" ID="dlCountryList" DataSourceID="dsCountryList"
DataValueField="countrylistid" DataTextField="description">
</asp:DropDownList>
and the page_load
Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
dlCountryList.SelectedValue = "GR"
Response.Write("*" + CStr(dlCountryList.SelectedIndex) + "*")
End Sub

I have a ASP.Net webform with a DropDownList control. This Dropdown gets it's values from a states table in an ObjectDatasource. The Dropdown contains states spelled out.
If I try to set the drop down to:
DropDownStates.SelectdValue = "Ohio"
I get an error that the value does not exist in the dropdown even though it does exist. But if I pad the value with the correct number of spaces to the right, it works like so:
DropDownStates.SelectdValue = "Ohio "
or
DropDownStates.SelectdValue = "Michigan "
How can I either define the dropdown without trailing spaces in the value of the dropwdown or set the SelectedValue with adding trailing spaces?
