Error From Config File After Converting Website Project To Web Application?

Jun 22, 2010

I got this error in a project I did a while back. I think this was a web site project that i converted to a web app project. This was a while ago. This is an app I'm trying to run on my local machine. I'm not using IIS.

Does anyone know what this means?

Error 2

It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.

C# - Migrating From Website Project To Web Application Project In Visual Studio 2010 Causing All Controls To Throw Error?

Mar 29, 2011

I recently updated my VS2010 website project from .NET 3.5 to 4.0. Everything was working fine in the website project. Today I decided to migrate the website to a web application project as I have learned this is the best way to work in .NET. I split out all my class files into a separate class library and copied all my other content into my new project. Then I updated all the references and web.config.

When I build the class library, everything works great. The problem is happening when I try to build/debug the web application project. It is acting like all the controls are missing and it is also throwing a bunch of compile errors about the public properties I have in my master pages.

Control errors: "The name 'INSERT CONTROL NAME HERE' does not exist in the current context"

Master page errors:'System.Web.UI.MasterPage' does not contain a definition....

It is giving these errors for every single control and master page property in my entire solution.I notice when I add a new web.form to this project, it also adds a filename.aspx.designer.cs file in addition to the .aspx and .aspx.cs file. My existing files do not have these extra files since they were created in a different .NET version.

UPDATE: It seems I was missing the step where I need to right click on the new application folder and select "Convert to web application". I just did that and it seems to be a little bit better...

Now it is choking on Literals that are inside single quotes:

<div class='<asp:Literal ID="CssClassLiteral" runat="server"></asp:Literal>'>

It doesn't see this literal when it does the conversion... Is the above valid code or should I implement that functionality another way?

C# - Converting A Website Project Type To A Regular Project

Jun 20, 2010

I've created a new vs.net project and added all the files from an asp.net website project.

When I compile, it couldn't find a reference to a class.

In the AppCode the class was defined, but without a namespace.

So I added a namespace, and then on the default.aspx.cs (this is where the error was originating) I added the using statement.

The using statement was not picking up the namespace.

VS 2008 - Converting Between Web Project To A Website

Apr 27, 2010

I am not sure if I am using the correct terms. But it is possible to create an asp.net website at least three ways.

1) Where the form and code behind code are in the same file
2) Where the form and code behind code are in separate files, resulting in 2 files for each page (*.aspx, and *.aspx.vb)
3) Where you upon the site up as a project, but insert web pages. This approach results in three files per page (*.aspx, *.aspx.designer.vb, and *.aspx.vb)

My problem is I have a site which is done the third way and I would like to switch it to the second. Is there any automated way to do this, or do I have to do it page by page. What I can do is Open a new site with Create Website, insert a page, and then do some copy and paste.

Trying Create Unit Testing For An Existing Website Project (not Web Application Project)?

Mar 11, 2010

I'm trying create unit testing for an existing website project (not web application project). I cannot access my under test classes unless I use accessor. However, if I use accessor, I have problem to initiate an object with passing arguments. I only want to create unit tetsing for App_Code. After searching web, and I found that I'd better to create a web application project using my current existing website project. From solution explorer, add new project ->using existing website. My questions is: what impact will have for my current website to create the new project? Should I just convert my current website to web application? If do that, will it cuase problems on my website? I am new on asp.net, still learning..

So in the following code when I call base.OnLoad(e) I am getting errors in the base class because the variable myString is null. In fact all the variables for the Base class are null. I can do

Web Forms :: User Controls Registered In Web.config After Conversion Of Website Project To Web Ap

Aug 3, 2010

I've converted an old school website project to a web application project. I've always registered all of my user controls in the web configs for easier maintainability. After converting the project type. None of my user controls registered in my web config are recognized any longer. In the designer files, it looks like it's unable to resolve the actual control and it's defaulting to some <namespace>.<ControlName> that is totally wrong. I really don't want to have to go through and put Register tags in each page where a control is used. In my web config i'm registering my control as follows:

[Code]....

I'm using Visual Studio 2010. I've seen several article around the internet that allude to an issue back in VS2005. Scott Gu commented on several. I haven't seen anything specifically referring to issue in 2010. Has anyone else encountered this type of issue. I provided a really brief overview and i would be happy to go into more detail

Security :: Unable To Encrypt Web.config ConnectionStrings In Web Application Project

Nov 28, 2010

I'm all set on the server side with the RSA key pair installed. Where I'm hung up is trying to get the job done on the web.config file ... can't seem to get the aspnet_regiis command string right. I am using the command string provided by the web host (DiscountAsp.net). Most (all) of the examples I read use a website on the development machine. I actually registered my project in IIS and tried that but it didn't work. In any case I would rather not have to go to the hassle of registering a project in IIS anyway if I can avoid it.

Details:

My web application project is in a folder on my local machine:

D:Projects<project name>

This is most recent (failed) attempt to use aspnet_regiis:

C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv4.0.30319aspnet_regiis.exe -pe "connectionStrings" "D:Projects<project name>"

Is it possible to just do this manually by looking at the NetFrameworkConfigurationKey_xxxxx.xml file and entering the values? Seems like it should be do-able except I'm not sure how to parse the xml file for the correct values.

On a related note, when I add the following code to web.config it "announces" that "The keyContainerName attribute is not allowed". Ditto useMachineContainer

[Code]....

C# - Post Build Copy Config File To Another Project?

Feb 13, 2010

I have a solution which contains a website and various class libraries. The exists on the file system like so:

C:Projects MyWebsitedevMyWebsite.sln
C:ProjectsCoreMyClassLibrary1.csproj
C:ProjectsCoreMyClassLibrary2.csproj

I want to move the App.config file from MyClassLibrary1 project to the bin of the MyClassLibrary2. I want to do this on post build in VS or MSBuild using relative paths if possible. This way anybody checking out the projects will not have to modify any paths if they choose to locate the project in a different location.

I have already tried the following approaches but to no avail.

copy /Y "$(ProjectDir)App.config"
$(ProjectDir).. MyClassLibrary2$(OutDir) MyClassLibrary2.dll.config"

Setting Up Dev Environment / Publish The Project Without Manually Changing The Web.config File?

Feb 15, 2011

I'm working on different windows machines and virtual windows machines on a mac. I have a project wich uses SQL server and AD for autentication.

Right now I have to be connected to VPN so that the asp.net web application can connect to AD using LDAP string to autentivate users, I also have the SQL server on the other side of the VPN connection.

Is there any way to setup my enviroment so that I can work locally without the AD, and on a local SQL server and be able to publish the project without manually changing the web.config file?

DataSource Controls :: Cannot Evaluate Expression Error After Converting VS 2003 Web Application To VS 2008?

Jul 8, 2010

I recently converted a web application of ours to VS 2008 so that we could upgrade to .net 3.51 framework.

I have been making some changes to the layout, to take advantage of ajax and minimize the amout of data needing to be loaded and the number of postbacks processed.

The problem I am having is when I try to save the data.

The page postback calls a local Sub which reads the form data into local variables and then passes these variables to our assembly.

The primary assembly has 70 parameters which are used to populate one of the tables in our database.

So I have 70 local variables just for this call plus a variable reference to the output of the assembly which contains a property for each of the columns in the associated database record.

There are some additional assemblies called to update other tables so, in all there are 121 locally defined variables in this sub.

Bear in mind that this sub is called from the page load event which has 93 of it's own locally declared variables.

Here is what is happening, when I run the code I am using cdate() to convert the value of a text box to datetime and pass it to my assembly. When doing so it throws a conversion error.

So I created a local datetime variable and converted the value of the control to the datetime and passed the variable to the assembly.

No more error, but the proc did not save the data as it was supposed to.

What I noticed in debugging, on the locals tab, is that every local datetime variable displayed the following message:

Cannot evaluate expression because we are stopped in a place where garbage collection is impossible, possibly because the code of the current method may be optimized

I also noticed that on the watch window the same message would display if I attempted to reference any of the datetime controls on the form.

There are only 3 variables and 3 datetime controls that appear to be affected. the controls are all html input boxes. Every other variable and control on the form behaves normally and I can see their values while debugging, it is just these six that are exhibiting the problem, whats more is that they are not new controls to the form.

VS 2010 - Make Project In WebSite Or Web Application?

Sep 29, 2010

When I start a new ASP.NET project in Visual Studio 2010, I can either create a new ASP.NET Web Site or an ASP.NET Web Application. What's the difference between these two project types? Why would I choose one over the other?

note: this question is an exact duplicate of this one, but I'm asking specifically about Visual Studio 2010 (there are no answers targeted at VS 2010 in the original question). So are the answers of the other question still valid or are there any changes with VS2010 which results in different answers?

C# - Include Another Project Console Application Exe In A Website?

Mar 30, 2011

I've got two projects: a .Net 4.0 Console Application and an Asp.Net 4.0 Website (they are in the same solution). Now I'd like to include the console application (its .exe) in the web application, because I need to run it on the server when the user clicks on a certain button.

Now I would like to include it in a way that the console application will be updated whenever I recompile the solution, so it stays up to date.

So... how can I include my .exe in my web app?
