Stop View From Using Prefixes On Fields?
Aug 23, 2010
ASP.Net Html.TextBoxFor (and the other XxxxxFor editor helper methods) default to rendering a field prefix. How do I disable field prefixes so it simply renders the property name as the Name/ID?
Here's an example:
<%= Html.EditorFor(m => chart.Title) %>
is rendered as:
<input id="Chart_Title" name="Chart.Title" type="text" value="">
I would prefer it to be rendered as:
<input id="Title" name="Title" type="text" value="">

On my form I have a button that pops up a panel to select an option from. It does a postback to fill in a textbox with the selected data. The other controls such as other textboxes and dropdowns are reset. Any way to stop this? Or do I have to save the settings and set it back on the postback?

I dont know whether this simple task or not, but I tried to search in google but couldn't find anything.
I've a asp.net form and user enters some data in the text boxes provided. Whenever user submits the form, browser will save that form data. I don't want this form data to be saved in browser. How can I restrict the browser saving this form data without touching the browser settings?
Application is developed using asp.net and normal text boxes are used here.

Does ASP.NET always apply the "ct100$..." prefixes to element IDs, or in some cases does it optimize this away if the element is guaranteed unique anyways. Recently I have seen builds differing in the ID prefixes being applied, one having the prefixes and one not but both deriving from the same source. Can anyone provide any more detail this, and on the workings of INamingContainers and ID generation?

I'm implementing an AJAX autocomplete feature where the user types into a textbox and the webpage generates suggestions (pretty much like how Google's search box works). I got the AJAX part to work right, but for some reason, my database query does not.Let's say I want to find "Chicago". Using the following query does not find it.SELECT TOP 10 citynames FROM city WHERE CONTAINS(citynames, 'chi*')But using this query does.SELECT TOP 10 citynames FROM city WHERE CONTAINS(citynames, 'chicago')By the way, "citynames" is an ntext type field and I'm using SQL SERVER 2008.Does anyone know why my first query can't find "Chicago"? I've been staring at that query for hours, yet can't find anything wrong with it. Something wrong with the database maybe?

MVC generates the following code in my edit view for me but I don't want the user to see it, let alone try and change it. If I delete the code I get an error because a required value is missing. What is best practice when dealing with this?
<div
class="editor-label">
@Html.LabelFor(model => model.AthleteID)
</div>
<div
class="editor-field">
@Html.EditorFor(model => model.AthleteID)
@Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.AthleteID)
</div>

I do not know if this can be done but lets say have a model like the one below:
I am trying to do this:
<%= Html.RadioButtonFor(model => model.B.height)%> -----> Does not work. Height is not a property
But B is a collection. How do I get access to the fields in table B in the View?
***********************************************************
Table A
Qid
name
age
Table B
Wid
Qid
gender
height

How I can get the generated view code below to place the editor-field to the right of the editor-label, on the same row? I don't want to mess with the generated defaults, e.g. remove the divs, as I am still in very early dev and regenerate views quite often.
<div class="editor-label">
<%: Html.LabelFor(model => model.Suburb) %>
</div>
<div class="editor-field">
<%: Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.Suburb) %>
<%: Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.Suburb) %>
</div>

By picking MVC for developing our new site, I find myself in the midst of "best practices" being developed around me in apparent real time. Two weeks ago, NerdDinner was my guide but with the development of MVC 2, even it seems outdated. It's an thrilling experience and I feel privileged to be in close contact with intelligent programmers daily. Right now I've stumbled upon an issue I can't seem to get a straight answer on - from all the blogs anyway - and I'd like to get some insight from the community. It's about Editing (read: Edit action). The bulk of material out there, tutorials and blogs, deal with creating and view the model.
So while this question may not spell out a question, I hope to get some discussion going, contributing to my decision about the path of development I'm to take. My model represents a user with several fields like name, address and email. All the names, in fact, on field each for first name, last name and middle name. The Details view displays all these fields but you can change only one set of fields at a time, for instance, your names. The user expands a form while the other fields are still visible above and below. So the form that is posted back contains a subset of the fields representing the model. While this is appealing to us and our layout concerns, for various reasons, it is to be shunned by serious MVC-developers.
I've been reading about some patterns and best practices and it seems that this is not in key with the paradigm of viewmodel == view. Or have I got it wrong? Anyway, NerdDinner dictates using FormCollection och UpdateModel. All the null fields are happily ignored. Since then, the MVC-community has abandoned this approach to such a degree that a bug in MVC 2 was not discovered. UpdateModel does not work without a complete model in your formcollection. The view model pattern receiving most praise seems to be Dedicated view model that contains a custom view model entity and is the only one that my design issue could be made compatible with.
It entails a tedious amount of mapping, albeit lightened by the use of AutoMapper and the ideas of Jimmy Bogard, that may or may not be worthwhile. He also proposes a 1:1 relationship between view and view model. In keeping with these design paradigms, I am to create a view and associated view for each of my expanding sets of fields. The view models would each be nearly identical, differing only in the fields which are read-only, the views also containing much repeated markup. This seems absurd to me. In future I may want to be able to display two, more or all sets of fields open simultaneously.

i just noticed that if my controller has a parameter with a name that matches the name of a field in my view model, and the view emits the value of the model's field, the value emitted is that passed in the query string, not the one set by the controller. is this by design?
here is what i mean:
my view model:
public class MyViewModel
{
int id;
string name; [code]....
sending a request to "create?id=1234" emits "1234" in the hidden field instead of "1".

I am using hidden fields to save some preset data, but upon postback they appear to disappear.
Here's what my controller actions look like:
[Code]....
The view is coded like this:
[Code]....
But when the POST action receives the object back, some of the fields have become null. The FormCollection, however, contains all values. I realize I could just take everything from the formcollection but it's probably better practice to use the object, right?

I have a details veiw and when you open it there are far too many fields so it ends up disappearing off the screen. I would like to split the view into two columns, and I tried to add a DIV with css class halfaway down the details view but it dosen't like divs being there. Is there a way round it? You can do it with FormView but i prefer DetailsView

I'm trying to bind custom object to details view.

Is there any way to show enum property fields in details view ?
I put some example code below (I do not specify any rows mappings, they are generated dynamically because different kind of objects are bound to details view):

I have a sql data souce that returns several columns of data, and they are displayed in a DetailsView on a pretty simple vb.net page. I'm stuggling with one field though for the details view.
It's a template field, and if ClientType=1 (this value is determined else where on the page), then the label in the template field should have Text='<%# Bind("ClientName") %>', but if the ClientType = 0, then the label in the template field should have Text='<%# Bind("ClientTemporaryName") %>'
How do I tell the details view to set the text for ClientName to one or the other?

I have a relatively complex dataset (numerous tables, some with multiple records) generated from reading in an XML file. I need to connect said dataset fields to an ASP form. At the moment I'm assigning them manually, like so in the pageload:
txt_first_init.Text = formData.ds.Tables["phrmHdrKey"].Rows[0]["first_init"].ToString();
txt_last_name.Text = formData.ds.Tables["phrmHdrKey"].Rows[0]["last_name"].ToString();
ddl_pregnancy_flag.SelectedValue = formData.ds.Tables["pPhrm"].Rows[0]["pregnancy_flag"].ToString();
And conversely when it's time to submit.
formData.ds.Tables["phrmHdrKey"].Rows[0]["first_init"] = txt_first_init.Text;
formData.ds.Tables["phrmHdrKey"].Rows[0]["last_name"] = txt_last_name.Text;
formData.ds.Tables["pPhrm"].Rows[0]["pregnancy_flag"] = ddl_pregnancy_flag.SelectedValue.ToString();
I did some looking into binding the textboxes (and dropdownlists, and checkboxes, and and and...) directly, but it seemed to be too many formats to use.
So this works fine, but as the number of fields increases, those load and unload lists are going to get unwieldy.

I am using TempleteFields for all columns in my GridView. In that columns I am using only some fields for customization but not all.
Is there any performance issue with Databound Fields vs Templete Fields in a GridView...?
Do I need to replace the remaining columns with Databound Columns instead of TempletField columns...?

I am working on Crystal Reports 8.5 and SQL Server 2000 as backend. I have a stored procedure which has been added to the Crystal Report. So that fields are visible in the Fields object section from where i can drag and drop the fields on the report and display it. But now as they want more fields i have written two select statements for displaying required fields. But these newly added fields are not visible in the Fields object section in the Crystal Reports. I have done verify database, removed and again attached the SP but the problem is not solved.

I have a GridView, and I want Column1 to be equal to datatable data (filled by a SqlDataAdapter). Then I have two other fields by the SqlDataAdapter (first name, last name), and I want to have those two fields combined to form Column2. I have a TemplateField for my GridView that combines the first name and last name with Eval()'s, but the GridView places this combined field TemplateField and puts it as the first column.
How can I do this so that TemplateField can go in between fields that are databound?

I am not too clear about the IIS lifecycle, but my general understanding is:
Every couple of hours IIS resets itself. This is apparently done so as to fix up any memory leaks, resource deadlocks etc. etc. ie. It seems to be a cleanup operation.
Every couple more hours (I think I read 23 hours) the server just stops listening to inbound requests and runs Application_End. An external page request will restart the app.
Can I get a bit more reasoning to why these behaviors occur? Especially with regards to item #2... My server runs internal scheduling behaviors which completely died last night. The reason was that Application_End occurs and no customer requests were happening to start the IIS server again. This seems weird. Why not just clean up memory leaks etc. and then keep IIS running exactly as it was?
