Store Website Configuration Data?
Jun 18, 2010
We have a platform for web applications. The idea is that different clients can have their data hosted and displayed on their own site which sits on top of this platform. Each site has a configuration which determines which panels relevant to the client appear on which pages.
The system was originally designed to keep all the configuration data for each site in a database. When the site is loaded all the configuration data is loaded into a SiteConfiguration object, and the clients panels are generated based on the content of this object. This works, but I find it very difficult to work with to apply change requests or add new sites because there is so much data to sift through and it's difficult maintain a mental model of the site and its configuration.
Recently I've been tasked with developing a subset of some of the sites to be generated as PDF documents for printing. I decided to take a different approach to how I would define the configuration in that instead of storing configuration data in the database, I wrote XML files to contain the data. I find it much easier to work with because instead of reading meaningless rows of data which are related to other meaningless rows of data, I have meaningful documents with semantic, readable information with the relationships defined by visually understandable element nesting.
So now with these 2 approaches to storing site configuration data, I'd like to get the opinions of people more experienced in dealing with this issue on dealing with these two approaches. What is the best way of storing site configuration data? Is there a better way than the two ways I outlined here?
note: StackOverflow is telling me the question appears to be subjective and is likely to be closed. I'm not trying to be subjective. I'd like to know how best to approach this issue next time and if people with industry experience on this could provide some input.

I want to make a 2nd website and am using a copy of the site files from my 1st site built for me, I added them via FTP to the hosting company. I realise when I edit the new site via the CMS it is editing both sites plus when I try to change anything to the CSS file I get the following error -
C:inetpubvhosts*****mysite******httpdocsapp_themessiteStyleSheet.css
So my questions are what do I need to change to be able to deploy a new site with the files I have to make a new site?I also don't understand where the password is coming from, I can see the User ID comes from the database. in the Asp.net connection strings are the following:
site Data Source=sql7.hostinguk.net;Initial Catalog=***;User ID=***;Password=*** - Where is this password coming from?
membership Data Source=sql7.hostinguk.net;User ID=***;Password=***;persist security info=False;initial catalog=***;

I have a website using .Net framework 2 on a dedicated server who's display periodically corrupts - typically after heavy traffic numbers to the server. I can correct the problem simply by uploading a batch of user-controls to the server, or recycling the memory pool.
Has anyone else seen this type of effect before, where the display of data-driven elements of a website corrupt?
Corrupt image first.

My question relates to the performance implications of reading application configuration data from an XML file.I am building an application that lists information from a database and needs to know how to display the lists, depending on the types of data returned.This is difficult to explain, but basically I would like to have an XML config file that lists the types and describes how to display them. This will allow me to change the display methods without re-compiling the application.
My question is really around performance. Given that my application will need to use this data many times during each page load...Should I be reading directly from the XML file and parse it each time I need it?
Or should I cache the XML object and parse it each time I need it?Or should I parse the XML once, generate some sort of object and cache that object?My guess is option 3, but I'm basically fishing for best practice around this.

I'm starting to consider creating a class library that I want to make generic so others can use it. While planning it out, I came to thinking about the various configuration settings that I would need. Since the idea is to make it open/shared, I wanted to make things as easy on the end user as possible. What's the best way to setup configuration settings without making use of web.config/app.config?

I'm trying to run a website (site2) that I've placed inside a folder (dir-site2) of another website (site1). The default file of site2 displays fine in every browser on my local computer, as in when I type http://localhost:45912/www.site1.com/dir-site2/default.aspx. But when I upload everything to my host's server and type this
http://www.site1.com/dir-site2/default.aspx I get a server "can't access" error message. I can't display any file that is inside the subdirectory, dir-site2.

I'm creating an Excel file in C# on my asp.net web site. Then, I want to save this file somewhere within the web server's files, and send that file to the browser for the user to download. I've got it working on my local system in the dev environment, but I'm not getting the file addressing right. How can I store a file in "~ParentFolderSubFolderfile.ext". Then send that file to the browser for user download.
String outputFile = Utilities.writeToExcelFile("", MapPath(@"~ReportFilesTempFilesDropShipData.xls"), table);
DownloadFile(outputFile);
public void DownloadFile(string fname)
{
string path = fname;
string name = Path.GetFileName(path);
string ext = Path.GetExtension(path);
string type = "";
// set known types based on file extension
if (ext != null)
{
switch (ext.ToLower())
{
case ".htm":
case ".html":
case ".aspx":
case ".asp":
type = "text/HTML";
break;
case ".xls":
case ".xlsx":
case ".csv":
type = "Application/x-msexcel";
break;
case ".pdf":
type = "Application/pdf";
break;
case ".txt":
type = "text/plain";
break;
case ".doc":
case ".docx":
case ".rtf":
type = "Application/msword";
break;
}
}
Response.AppendHeader("content-disposition",
"attachment; filename=" + name);
if (type != "")
Response.ContentType = type;
Response.WriteFile(path);
Response.End();
}
Again, this works fine on my local pc, but when I move it to the server I get an error for accessing the path. And the path listed in the error code is NOT where I want the file to go.

I use Web Forms and Asp.Net with MS SQL.
For my Web Site I need store these codes belove, maybe others in future:
Google Analytic Code
Some JavaScript codes
HTML Footer and Header for my template.
I need a solution which could be centralized, use CACHE, easy to update:
01 Use a DATABASE with a Table (configure table) which for every records (VARCHAR) would allow storing of these spinets of code as string.
02 Use simple Text Files in a specific folder, so I can include these files in my code. I could update codes using FTP and NotePad (Here I am concern about cache).
03 Use Web.Conf file.
04 Use Text File and a Class wich would manage storing in cache the content of these file.

I'm looking for a way I can store username and password credentials in a web.config file & use these values to re-direct to another web service, once these are authenticated.
The process is as follows:
* User logs into our website with required credentials
* There is a link on our website which invokes a new webservice
* The webservice is a paid for subscribed service (which requires authentication)
* Usually, there is a web form for this type of web service but since we need to steam-line the process from initial application logon, the logon page is not required.
* So when the link on our website is clicked, the new webservice is invoked. Authentication should be done by using the credentials in the web.config file and user is redirected to webservice (avoiding logon page)
Could someone tell me using pseudocode or a small asp.net code example how we could achieve this process?
The key goal is to avoid user going into the Logon page and redirecting directly to the URL for usage of the webservice.
