Unable To Grab Client ID Via JQuery?
Jul 21, 2010
for some reason when I alert this out I'm only getting the server-side Id, not the auto generated ASP.NET ID that would be created during runtime:
<form id="form1" runat="server">
p id="facebook-LoginButtonContainer"><asp:ImageButton id="btnFacebookLogin" runat="server" ImageUrl="images/facebookLoginBtn.jpg" /></p>
</div>
</form>
<script type="text/javascript">
var loginButtonID = '<%=btnFacebookLogin.ClientID %>';
alert(loginButtonID);
NOTE: the code above is inside an .aspx page that's wrapped inside an IFrame. I know that's probably some of the issue here maybe? If not then what?? I don't have a master page included this time either because it doesn't make sense as this page serves as the content for this IFrame. So it's just just a plain old .aspx inside an IFrame with a form that has runat="server"

I have the following jQuery code working as it is (passing the value of 'test") but what I want to do is to pass the value of the label control (lblNames). I'm using the label control to collect the uploaded file names.
jQuery:
$(document).ready(function () {
$("#btnUpload").click(function () {
$("#Notes", top.document).val('test');
});
});

I receive the following error, when trying to consume Wcf service:
"An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host". Consuming the service works fine when the host and the client are on the same machine. When I move the client to Hyper-V virtual machine (I didn't try it on a real computer) - it throws the error. Both firewalls are turned off Do you know what can cause such behaviour? Here are the details:
Both the client (hyper-v) and the service are on Windows server 2008 R2
Service url - http://wcftest/CalculatorService.svc (wcftest is the website and is mapped in the hosts file to localhost)

Are there any configuration settings which I'm missing?

I am having a problem with the Client Validation not firing when I have marked a nullable DateTime field as [Required] and the value of the field is null. (It is actually stopping ALL client validation on the page working - not just the DateTime field).
Interestingly enough, once a post back has been done and the error picked up on the server, the client validation starts working.
Also if you set the date to a none null value (see commented out line in the controller) it will also work
I have replicated this behaviour in a small test project (this is deliberately very Noddy - just enough to replicate the problem)
Am I doing something fundamentally wrong or am I looking at coding some sort of work around here? (I realise that a Required nullable field sounds like a bit of a oxymoron, but I wanted to present the user with a blank field which they must then fill, not one pre-populated with an arbitrary date value)

I am using VS2008, SP1. I am unable to put breakpoints in my client side javascript code. Wherever I try to put the breakpoint, I am getting the message: "This is not a valid location to put the breakpoint". I have the js intellisense working fine. I also unchecked the two "Disable Debugging" checkboxes on IE. Due to this problem, I am unable to debug the js in VS 2008.

I have googled and searched the forums for an answer to this but nothing seems to fit.
I have installed the SP1 release of SQL 2008 Report Viewer Distributable and the SP1 of 2005 as well. My report viewer control is pointing at version 9.0.0.0 in the page references and web.config.
The problem is when clicking on the print icon i get the ActiveX control install prompt, click install it disappears briefly and I then get the "Unable to load client print control error". This is happening on my development machine.
Under the C:WINDOWSDownloaded Program Files folder i have a control with the name {0D221D00-A6ED-477C-8A91-41F3B660A832} I have tried removing this and allowing the ActiveX to install again, but this has made no difference.
I have the "Unable to load print control" on two live web servers so want the control working on my development machine before i tackle the issue on the servers.

Anyone have any suggestions for 3rd party controls that work entirely client side?By this I mean the following using the example of an invoice:An invoice is a master, with children.I have to be able to select properties on the invoice and add lines to the invoice via a grid to obviously have the customer like my invoice editing window because they don't want to have to enter the basics and then save and then add the line items.In a classic asp.net/mvc.net model the server does the processing. This requires that you either store your data objects in the view state (in this case EF) or you store it in the session.Neither scales worth crap.What I'm looking to do is be able to create an entire form that interacts in javascript using jquery and never posts back to the server to be persistant. It may pull data from the server to update lists and do lookups etc. but it will never have to have the server hold information to be persistant while it's being built (and thus only when the user clicks save will it actually post the data back.In a perfect world what would happen is that the EF object would be converted to javascript and then used and bound, and updated. Once I'm done I'd post back the javascript object and it would be automatically converted to the EF equivalent class which I could then attach and save to the database.By doing this I can eliminate all persistant memory usage and indeed essentially ALL use of the Session or viewstate which would be super powerful.

I need to pass a customer id to get some data back for a customer from a webservice. I can't figure out how to get to the webservice, I have a breakpoint set in the webmethod but it's not being hit and the alert box is not popping up either. For a test I am just trying to show some value from the returned data in an alert box. Note I am just hard coding the customer id of 1001. The webmethod takes a parameter of string customerid.

Does some one know what's missing or how to debug this issue?

Currently users select a record in a gridview and click on the delete button. Delete button passes certain variables to identify the record, makes a SQL connection and then deletes the record by executing a stored procedure. This is way the delete button's code behind works. Now we need a confirmation box if a certain flag is False. If the users select YES then they should be able to delete any way otherwise clicking on Cancel should stop the operation. I don't want to use the onClientClick event of the button like many examples on Web show, instead I am using the jQuery, that uses the button ID and pops up a confirmation dialog. The issue I am having is even if the Cancel button on the confirmation dialog is clicked it still goes on to run the code behind, executes the stored procedure and deletes the record. The browser being used is IE 7.0, how do I stop the button from running the code behind in the button_click event if they select cancel?
I have tried return false, e.preventDefault();event.propagation, event.returnValue = false etc but can't stop it. Here is the jQuery, that goes to the webservice when clicked and determines whether to display the confirmation or not when another stored procedure returns the record count of 0 or more. Like I said it works fine in getting the flag value from the SQL but does not stop at the client level and continues on to the code behind of btnDelete.
$(function() {
$("#btnDelete]").click(function(e) {
$.ajax({
type: "POST",
contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8",
url: "WebServices/myServices.asmx/ConfirmDelete",
data: "{}",
dataType: "json",
error: function(req, msg, err) { alert(req, msg, err); },
success: function(msg) {
if (msg.d == 0 && !confirm("Do you wish to delete this record?")) {
event.preventDefault();
return false;
event.returnValue = false;
}
}
});
});
});

For a slick UI, I am deciding between using a client side library (JQuery or ExtJS) or go with the AJAX Control toolkit. I understand that the widgets supported by ExtJS rich library does not match what's there in the toolkit. What are the pros of cons of using one over the other?

Clicking 'Edit' for a row expands it (using JQuery) to reveal the full horror of all the associated editable objects. One of these is a list of documents associated with each row and needs to be JQuery-editable so the user could click 'edit' to open up the full row gui, then un/select checkboxes to de/associate documents and then hit 'Save' to persist everything.
Currently I'm using nested repeaters to store the initially-hidden fields - the repeater generates a hidden formfield containing a comma-separated list of IDs for the assoc documents. When it comes to populating the Edit gui I do a split operation on the delimited string and set/unset the checkboxes as required.
This is proving a nightmare from a maintainability perspective and in my frustrated wanderings of the web in search of a solution i noticed JQuery has some functionality to act as a client-side database. Does any one have any experience of this, and if so, would you recommend it? My custom JS to parse csv-strings and dynamically build the gui is starting to grind me down a bit.

Using MVC 3 RTM and MvcContrib/FluentHtml version 3.0.51.0, I can't get the jQuery client side validation to work. Server side validation works fine, and returns showing the correct validation summary, etc. But the form post always tries to hit the server-side post controller action when it should have stopped on the client side to display the validation error.
I tried replacing the MvcContrib ModelViewPage with the default Mvc ViewPage and it still didn't work.
Here's my code:
Web.config has:

Site.Master page has:

Currently, I am exploring options for sending data to the client. What I am hoping for is suggestions, or a pros and cons feedback.
What I am wanting to do is query the database then send this data to a web service ( or maybe wcf ). Once there, jquery ( or another JS library ) will utilize this data to fill a grid/tree/form depending. This all seems very very basic, but what concerns me is the amount of data that can be sent. I have seen some grids that have 16K records...and what worries me is that would be WAY too much data to send.
I was just wondering how these things are handled. My current thoughts are to do a 'onDemand' loading, but my inexperience has me second guessing. Also, I know this isn't directly related to jquery, but I notice there are a lot more examples with wcf rather than webmethod/web services.Is wcf better for these types of things?
