Way To Migrate A Website From A Proprietary System
Aug 24, 2010
we are migrating a website from a proprietary system a new system built inSQL 2008. about 6,000 pieces of content with individual hard-coded aliases. How could we go about creating a match table to ensure these resolve with our new system (based on Intellgentsia URL rewriter)?

I have inherited an ASP.net website that was originally started back in 2007. I believe that a lot of the codebase was written in version 1.1, patched to 2.0 where necessary. The client is still not happy with some features and has requested changes to be made. In "peeling back the onion skin" I found that the codebase is rather outdated. I have asked and received approval to upgrade the entire application (website plus VB library) to ASP.net 3.5. Besides following the standard help instructions in VS 2008 and the advise of other posters on this site, can anyone direct me to specific resources to utilize in reviewing the 1.1/2.0 codebase and selecting the best 3.5 constructs that are most compatible? Do you favor the approach of converting the codebase in VS 2008, or do you start with a clean slate and copy/paste code where necessary? The original codebase uses Anthem and Free Textbox libraries. Do you favor upgrading these libraries to 3.5 where available, or are there other (free) libraries that will do a better job?

At the moment I have to migrate a web-application (ASP.NET 2.0 with Masterpages) from IE6 to IE7/IE8. Where can I find hints and guidelines for this topic? The webapplication looks fine in IE6 but completely awful in IE7 and IE8. In IE8 I cannot see the compatibility button.

We recently migrated from VS 2008 to VS 2010. The migration went fine, except for our web project. Before, in VS 2008, the site showed up as http://localhost/Website. Now, it appears as C:...Website. It appears that when we did the migration, VS started to treat it as a file system website.
I've tried removing the existing site and re-adding it as an existing website, but it still displays it as C:...Website. Is there any way to convert it back to show it as a http://localhost/website, and run through IIS, as opposed to the default ASP.NET Development Server?

I am currently creating a .NET based (website/system) solution for small IT companies and I am offering it in a self-hosted package, which means my clients are going to mainly install it on their own servers. How do I make sure my system is not being run except on one server per client and no body is illegally-copying it to other servers/machines?

The file system I'm publishing to is a not hosted by me, but by my university. IT here offers students their own web directory to host a website. My intention is to use it to host projects for classes and demo them for my professors. You can enter in a specific link in any browser to go to this website and view it as long as there is a file named 'index.html' in the directory with some presentable html code.
So here's the problem. I want my website to be written using ASP.NET and when I use VS2010 to publish my ASP.NET website to the 'File System,' I cannot simply open up my browser, type in the normal link, and have it display. It just shows up as a list of files in the directory and I can see all my source code for the web site

How can I use the enterprise library to create the data access layer? I am very beginner to Enterprise Library? How can I configure it for my website? Should I have to include the DLL? How it will take the connection string from the Web.Config file?

I've a solution which consists of a web project and a class library project. The web project solution directly references a wcf service. There is a 2nd wcf service, but it is the class library project which directly references it. I'm adding the class library (output) as reference to my web project.
Hence in my web project's web.config I now have two scf services configured. This process was easy since I had manually copied the app.config (system.serviceModel part) directly to the web.config, and then configured the web project to talk directly with another wcf service (directly, not through any dlls).
My web project needs to talk to a 3rd web service (asmx). Again I plan to bring this as a class library and include the dll into my web project. (This is a separate solution). When I took a look at this particular class lib project's app.config, I thought i just copy those necessary sections and merge it correspondingly with my current web.config.
So for the 3rd class lib project (which references the asmx service) I happened to notice that it had, under the bindings node, a node called basicHttpBinding, and next, a customBinding. Then further under the client node, there were two endpoint nodes which had the service attributes. (I don't understand why there should be two end points here first of all).
So I copied what came under the bindings node (from the 3rd class lib prj app.config) and appended it to the bindings node (in the web.config). I did a similar process for copying the end points too. But now when I try run the web site I get an exception which halts at the time of initializing the soap client (asmx service): it says something like its not able to determine the endpoint for this contract.
The web.config before I add the asmx web service looks like this:

I have recently developed a new vs2010 web application that I would like to add to my web site.
The existing website was developed using vs2008. The web site is hosted on a windows 2008 server running iis 7. My new web application sits below my main website i.e. mywebite mywebsite/mynewwebsite
I have set the application pools for the mynewwebsite to be asp.net v4.0, leaving the application pools for mywebsite as .net v2.0 If I try and open my new web application i.e. [URL] then I get 500. Internal server error. I assume that it is iis that is unhappy here. Do I have to rebuild the whole of my web site to be vs2010 using asp.net v4.0. If I do should I use ASP.Net v4.0 or ASP.net v4.0 Classic for my application pools, and should I have a separate and distinct application pool for each of my web applications ( I have 4 of these) Just to clarify my clients can log on the web site as

Currently we have a bunch of web sites (web site projects) that I think should be converted to web application projects. Everybody agrees.
But a number of custom BuildProviders are used to generate controls and unfortunately MSDN says that
Adding a customized BuildProvider class to the Web.config file works in an ASP.NET Web site but does not work in an ASP.NET Web application project
Are there some ways to migrate though without full discarding of custom BuildProviders mechanism?
