Windows - Pass Requests To URLs Without Extension To .NET On IIS6?
Mar 30, 2011
I want my ASP.NET HTTP handler to be invoked when a user opens an URL of this format:http://mySite/getStuff?id="actualId"In order to do that on IIS5.1 I had to open the IIS management console and map .* extension onto ASP.NET ISAPI handler so that the request is processed using ASP.NET in the first place.Turns out IIS6 console won't accept .* as a valid extension.I know there's such thing as URL rewrite, but I feel it's an overkill for such simple case. Are there some easier ways to pass all requests to URLs that don't have an extension to ASP.NET?

I have a site on domain1. I need to open a ModalDialog with a Page on domain2. My Domain2 is protected not to allow anonymous access so i get a login window like:
My problem is, for this one functionality, i want users to be able to see that ASPX, through the ModalDialog, without authenticating.
I tried using the ftp way:(URL)
and i get a javascript error.
My site is hosted in IIS6, Windows Server 2003 and i have full access to the server.

I am having an issue with IIS6 and intergrated windows authentication that is driving me nuts, and I am hoping one of you guys can point me in the right direction.
I have written an ASP.net 3.5 application, and have installed it on a Windows 2003 R2 SP2. I have turned on intergrated windows authentication on, turned off anonymous access. using local host on the server itself I have no problems, it works, picks up the NTlogin.
However when I go to a clients machine (logged in as one of the users of the domain) and try to access the website
http://10.1.1.22/ I get asked for a username and password. If i enter a valid user name and password then I have no probelms. The NTlogin is picked up, application works.
But my issue is why does it come up with a username and password at all? shouldn't it just know this user is already in the domain, just go straight through to iis? how can i get rid of this? I have read multiple forums about server delegation etc... metabase.xml... nothing seems to work

not sure if this is the correct place to ask this question, but I have deployed my asp.net application onto windows server 2008 r2, I can get the website to half work, but some code in it that detects the current lan id CurrentUserIDtextBox.Text = Context.User.Identity.Namedoes not work. this then causes problems later in the application for searching active directoy. All that is returned is spaces. I suspect this is something to do with setting the Integrated Windows Authentication as checked. In IIS5 I had this checked with Annonymous Access unchecked. In IIS6 I cannot find where this is set. I found an authentication icon which has Annonymous Authentication as Enabled, ASP.NET Impersonation and Forms Authentication as Disabled.Should there be an option for Integrated Windows Authentication?

I have experienced some troubles when using the IIS server at my workstation with Windows 7. This is a development machine and I don't need to use it as a production server or anything, but for some tests it's quite usefull to see what happens when a lot of requests comes concurrently (in this case even in the same session).
I have learned that with my edition of Windows 7, the limit of requests is 10, but I thought it only means the limit of requests that can be served at any point of time. What I am experiencing instead, is that after firing 10 requests one by one, if the first one didn't complete before the last one was fired, it never completes. The whole IIS is dead, no further requests are put in the worker process queue (there are already 10 requests there hanging so it kinda makes sense) and the only way to go on is to restart.
Is this a standard behavior that cannot be changed on Windows 7 and does firing 10 requests really have to kill IIS (or at least the current worker process) ? Is there some way to change the configuration to fix it (without compromising the setup by creating bunch of worker processes etc.) ?

I've been asked to upgrade a few applications and I'm planning on merging all of them into one asp.net application. I'm fine with this decision and have spoken with fellow workers and they also think it's the best option to go with.
The application will be accessed from a small group of users which belong to a larger domain. I'm currently planning on using Windows authentication and only allow this small set of users to access the asp.net application. Also there must be some role management, so that only certain users can view certain functionality.
I really don't want to have many different windows groups; so I want to avoid having to assign different windows groups to different folders and control permissions in the web.config.
What I'd like to do is:
- Assign one windows group to the small group of users who will access the page.
- Create a custom membership provider and control the user who accesses the application. Depending on the user I will then assign his current set of roles.
- Add an application setting to the web.config, with the name of the current administrator, so if he logs in, he will be assigned all roles, and will be able to create and assign roles to other users.

I have a small project I am working on using web developer express, and I am trying to get windows authentication to work with my intranet website project. This website is only to be accessed inside my LAN and not from the internet at all, so I figured windows authentication would be best. What happens when I turn it on (and I've tested this from multiple browsers: IE8, Firefox, Chrome, Safari) is that the website asks the user to log in (via pop up textbox). Not only does it request the user to log in (which I don't think it should, since the login is based on windows authentication and I am on a windows machine already logged into the internal domain) but it requests the user to login multiple times, sometimes I get asked to log in and type in the same username/password combination 12 different times. It seems to me that the asp page is requesting permission to view each individual element and requires authentication to load one object (like an image or text box).
I am severely annoyed. :( I just wanted authentication to work smoothly without any login requests, or at the mostone request.

I am stuck with the database row level security model that my predecessor has implemented on this project. I am trying to make an extension method for my linq to sql classes to make it easier to filter rows of data in my linq queries. The problem I am facing is that I need to somehow tell it how to access the primary key value of the object in the where clause. I get errors about DynamicInvoke(object[]) cant be converted to SQL. Here is a sample of what I am working with:
[Code]....
How do I do this?

I have a really weird problem that I've been investigating for at least one week now. I deliver a website hosting both ASP classic and .NET 3.5 content in IIS6 on a Windows 2003 server environment with MySQL db backend. The solution has been installed on several servers (some hosted in WMWare) with no problems. On one specific server, also hosted in WMWare, the user experience great performance issues on the website. The problems are most seen when using database resources and is not limited to either .net or asp classic, but I am still not sure that the problem is only related to database calls.
Following components are involved:
IIS6 .NET FW 3.5 MyODBC 3.51 / 5.1 MySQL 4.x
Code executed on the server using all resources above runs smoothly when the IIS is not involved. The website shows times up to 2 minutes to execute code that takes 2 seconds outside the IIS. The exact same code is executed. Using profiling tools, I've seen that the great loss comes within calls to unmanaged code, for example when System.Data.ODBC namespace to calls into myodbc.dll.
The tricky part is: If at least one console user is logged in to the server, the performace problems are not seen anymore. When the user logs out, the problem appears again.I have tried to reinstall all components above, tried different versions of MyODBC, tried different website authentication methods, tried to run website under administrator privilegies, installed various MS KB's with no success.

NOTE:
origianlurl is the full url of the first searched page, and relativeUrl is a url found within the searched page (it can be a full www.site.com or a /contactus.html)

what I want to do is, upon clicking a button on test.html, I want the getitem.aspx page to open in a new dialog and allow entry on a text box. After clicking the OK button on getitem.aspx, this dialog should close and the entry should be passed back to the html page. The issue is that the getitem.aspx has several buttons that trigger postback - but I only want the item from the text box to be sent back to test.html upon clicking of the OK button and not any other buttons.

which requires SSL. In the IIS manager properties for the folder, under "Authentication and access control", Anonymous Access is disabled and "Authenticated Access" is set to "Integrated Windows authentication."
When I connect to the site in Chrome, I receive two login boxes. The first is from mysite.com/alpha:443, and the second is from mysite.com/alpha:80. Firefox appears to re-send my credentials for the second box so it is never shown.

I've set up a web app on IIS6 with a "{controller}.mvc/..."-mapping. Everything is running fine - except for the root-path (http://www.myapp.com). The additional routes.MapRoute for "Root" is applied in global.asax (as in the MS-example "Listing 2 - Global.asax (modified with extensions)").In VS2010 debugging mode everything (including the root) works - as well as in the "published" app (on Win7 IIS 7.5). I've copied the whole published app to the IIS6.

I have a fully dynamic application that uses UrlRewriting.Net that works perfectly within the visual studio environment. As you can see from the rules within the web.config file below, UrlRewriting.Net rewrites the destination as "~/index.aspx?URLPath=$1&URLString=$2", basically index.aspx searches the database for the page properties and builds the page based on the parameters passed. There are no physical files for the website, only index.aspx with all pages and its webparts build dynamically on the fly.
The application is compiled as ASP.NET 3.5 and runs on a Windows Server 2003 x64 standard edition.
To my knowledge the configuration you see in the web.config below should work in iis6, however does not
. Does the installment of UrlRewriting.Net require configuration in iis6 as well?

I've recently upgraded VS 2008 to VS 2010. On our server we have IIS6 installed and we can not change that in near future. Even though we will develop new applications to be deployed on IIS7 but if situation demands we may need to develop an application using .net 4.0 and to be deployed on IIS6, then in this case I wanted to know whether IIS6 supports .net 4.0 application or not?
If I can deploy, then do I need to take care of any configuration or any other setting I should change before deploying it?

I added the following lines to Application_Start method in global.asax:
var provider = new TestVirtualPathProvider();
HostingEnvironment.RegisterVirtualPathProvider(provider);
Yet the 'TestVirtualPathProvider' is never used when deploying this application in IIS6 (it does in the ASP.NET Development Server).
Edit: the default path provider has always done its job correctly and served (non-embedded) views correctly. The problem is simply that I want to use my own path provider to provide embedded views. So, initially, I already had the following wildcard mapping configured:
Any possible reasons why this does not work in IIS6? Are there any other factors (handlers for example) wich might influence the used VirtualPathProvider?
