MVC :: Does [HandleError] Attribute In MVC Replaces The Traditional Try Catch Exception Handling

Feb 3, 2010

Does [HandleError] attribute in MVC replaces the traditional try catch exception handling?

As I have seen codes in controllers where the top line of code is [HandleError] also I have not seen much of try catch in the code of the application I am working on.

Getting Unhandled Exception But Unable To Catch With Try Catch

Sep 14, 2011

I get this error in the browser:

Thread was being aborted.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.Threading.ThreadAbortException: Thread was being aborted.

An unhandled exception was generated during the execution of the current web request. Information regarding the origin and location of the exception can be identified using the exception stack trace below.

Stack Trace:

Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.3053; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.3053

I have try{}catch(Exception ex){} in the right place:

protected void Button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
// all processing occurs inside here
catch(Exception ex)

I even created a global.asax file and on the Application_Error event, I wrote a code that would email me the error (and i'm not getting an email regarding that error when I get the error shown above). I know for a fact that the thread is going inside the "try" statement because I send emails to myself whenever it finishes certain codes inside of it. So how come I'm getting that error in my browser instead of it being handled in my "catch" statement? I have two problems here, one, why is the exception not going to my "catch" statement, and two, why am I getting that error in the first place.

Note: my web app calls a webservice.

Set Dynamic Controls So It Doesn't Throw Exception

Jun 28, 2010

I have problem with Dynamic Controls in my Wizard Steps. In one of my Steps, I create a set of text boxes and checkboxes based on values from an XML document. Now, I initialise my dynamic controls using the OnInit method of the page, but at this stage there is no xml document until that step is reached, and of course I get null exception. How do I set my dynamic controls so it doesn't throw an null exception and be able to load any xml document when that step is reached?

Global.Asax - When Click On Datagrid Throw Exception

Nov 4, 2010

I m having a datagrid and for client side events I m using Javascript. I have few other buttons in the same page.

when I click on datagrid and select, it is working fine. After that, if I click on any other button in the Page, It is directly going to global.asax and throwing exception.

If I click directly on other buttons, they are working fine. Once I click on Datagrid and try to click on other buttons, it is throwing that exception.

How To Throw Exception If Session Is Written To In ReadOnly Mode

Sep 3, 2010

I would like to find a way to raise an exception if the Session is written to when in readonly mode. When EnableSessionState is set to "ReadOnly", values can still be put in Session, but the next request they will not be there. This seems somewhat dangerous.

One option is to create a helper class which we alway use to access session. However, this still leaves room for a developer to inadvertently use session directly, and fall into the "readonly" trap. Is there a way to create a CustomSessionStateDataStore that sits on top of the existing session code? I could not see an obvious way, and you can't inherit from System.Web.SessionState.SessionStateStoreData directly.

DataSource Controls :: EntityDataSource Throw Exception When Update With Self-Reference?

Nov 3, 2010

For a Table A defined in the DB like this:

A :{ id, selfId, name,} where selfId is a foreign key refered to Table A itself.

I generated the Entity automatically like this:

A :{ string id; A self; string name,} when i update the entity in gridview Edit/Update CommandField

i got the exception:

Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Source Error:

Stack Trace:

I guess maybe this is caused by:

A is to be updated, and when the EntityDataSource construct the new A, the reference "self" is invalid at that moment. I do not want to modify my DB structure and do not want to lose the self reference, The event EntityDataSource_Updating is not triggered while the exception hit. so i can not access my entity at any time. Maybe the worst idea is deal the whole Update Procedure myself. However, is there any better workaround?

C# - Exception Handling - Implement Custom Exception Classes?

Jul 2, 2010

i have this application structure:

1. Presentation Layer which calls

2. Business Logic Layer which in turn calls

3. Data Access Layer to do the dealing with the database.

Now i have a Contacts page from where i can add a new contact to the database.So to add a New Contact i fill in all the required details and then call a Add Method (residing in the BLL) from the page, which in turn call a Add Method residing in the DAL.this method in the DAL returns the Current Identity of the record which is then return back to the BLL method and finally delivered on the page.this is fine. but what if a get an exception how do i handle it properly because the method in DAL has a return type of int and i dont want to throw another error!! coz other wise i will have to write try catch in almost all the methods.

//something like this
public int AddMethod(ContactClass contactObj)
int result = 0;[code]...

rather i want to show the user a user-friendly message which they can easily understand and in the mean while i will send a mail to myself documenting the Error that just can i implement my custom exception classes.

MVC Exception Not Being Caught In Try Catch Block?

Jan 21, 2010

I have tried this on two different controller methods now, and both times, even if the linq2sql doesn't allow the data to be saved, the code never jumps into the catch block.

I've watched the noun object in the middle of the trace, and the isvalid property is false, but the modelstate isvalid is true. Either way, the code never jumps into the catch block.I'm pulling my hair out about this. I feel like it will be something really silly.

The code all works similar to nerd dinner.

NounRepository nounRepository = new NounRepository();
Noun noun = new Noun();

I'd rather not have to add code in this manner though, as it seems like an unnecessary duplication.

C# - How To Catch Exception Occurred In DAL Of ObjectDataSource Object

Sep 1, 2010

I have ObjectDataSource and GridView on one of the pages of my web project.

To initialize ObjectDataSource i use Init event:

protected void ObjectDataSource1_Init(object sender, EventArgs e)
ObjectDataSource1.EnablePaging = true;
ObjectDataSource1.TypeName = "CustomerDataSource";
ObjectDataSource1.DataObjectTypeName = "Customer";
ObjectDataSource1.SelectMethod = "GetCustomers";
ObjectDataSource1.UpdateMethod = "Update";
ObjectDataSource1.SelectCountMethod = "GetCustomersCount";
ObjectDataSource1.MaximumRowsParameterName = "maximumRows";
ObjectDataSource1.StartRowIndexParameterName = "startRowIndex";

Somewhere in DAL:

public static List<Customer> GetCustomers(int maximumRows, int startRowIndex)
try {
... some select to database here...
catch (Exception ex)
throw ex;

Now let's imagine that GetCustomers for some reason throws an exception. How could i catch this exception and handle it? I know i can use Application_Error, but i would like to catch this exception somehow on my page and show some friendly message to the user.

Event Causing Error But Can't Catch Exception

Apr 22, 2010

A developer has created a custom control in ASP.NET using VB.NET. The custom control uses a repeater. In certain scenarios, the rpt_ItemDataBound event is encountering a data error. My goal is rather than having the user see the yellow screen of death, give the user a friendlier error explaining exactly what the data error is. I figured I would be able to use a Try/Catch block as shown below throw the exception, however, it appears that the event has nowhere to be thrown to and stops executing at the "End Try" line.

Protected Sub rpt_ItemDataBound(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.RepeaterItemEventArgs) Handles rpt1.ItemDataBound, rpt2.ItemDataBound
Catch ex As Exception
Throw ex
End Try
End Sub

In VB.NET, I can find where the repeater's DataSource is being set, however, I can not find a DataBind event. how I can capture the exception in this ASCX control so I can report it to the user? Edit: The stack trace looks like this. There is another repeater within the repeater that is actually causing the error (rptOther) and I'm able to catch the error, but I can only throw it to the rpt_ItemDataBound. I can't figure out how rpt_ItemDataBound is getting called without a DataBind event.

State Management :: How To Catch Session Timeout Exception

Jun 25, 2010

I need to create a small web application. The first thing I need to do is to develop the login, logout and user session management functionality. I wanted to use a masterpage and a usercontrol for this purpose. When a user open the page and IS LOGGED IN, the usercontrol should something like this:
"Hello Username! <a>Logout</a>"
And if he is NOT LOGGED IN, the Usercontrol should show something like this
"Login | Logout"

When he clicks on the Login Button the Login-page should be opened. How can I build a Usercontrol which does the above thing. (I have never build a usercontrol and used it in a masterpage before!) The second problem is a little bit komplexer: What happens if the user idles some times and after that time (for example 30minutes) comes back to his pc and wants to execute an action in the web application. Normally he should get an session timeout exception. I don't want that the user sees this errorpage, I want to redirect him to the Login Page and he should relogin and gets an error message shown something like "You were timed out. Please login again".

Why Does Custom HttpResponse Throw Exception On HttpResponse.End()

Jul 27, 2010

I'm writing some code in which I need to use my own HttpResponse object to capture the output from a method on another object that takes an HttpResponse as a parameter. The problem is, this other object (which I cannot modify) calls HttpResponse.End(), which causes an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" exception to be thrown. What can I do about this?

Dim myStringbuilder As New StringBuilder
Dim myStringWriter As New IO.StringWriter(myStringbuilder)
Dim myResponse As New Web.HttpResponse(myStringWriter)

someObject.doStuffWithHttpResponse(myResponse) ' calls myResponse.End() and crashes

Here's some more complete information about the error, thrown from the following code in a console application:

Dim myStringbuilder As New StringBuilder
Dim myStringWriter As New IO.StringWriter(myStringbuilder)
Dim myResponse As New Web.HttpResponse(myStringWriter)
Catch ex As Exception
End Try

Here's the text of the exception:

System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Architecture :: Exception Handling In MVP?

May 28, 2010

I'm wondering what's the preferred way to manage exceptions in an MVP implemented with a Passive View.

There's a discussion in my company about putting try/catch blocks in the presenter or only in the view.

In my opinion the logical top level caller is the presenter (even if the actual one is the view).

Moreover I can test the presenter and not the view. This is the reason why I prefer to define a method in the view interface:
