MVC :: Does [HandleError] Attribute In MVC Replaces The Traditional Try Catch Exception Handling
Feb 3, 2010
Does [HandleError] attribute in MVC replaces the traditional try catch exception handling?
As I have seen codes in controllers where the top line of code is [HandleError] also I have not seen much of try catch in the code of the application I am working on.
I am experimenting with the relationship between Elmah and MVC's plumbed in exception handling, and am surprised at the outcome of the following code. This is a brand new, straight from project template MVC application, and I have only added Elmah modules and handlers to the web.config.
[Code]....
Break when error is thrown is set to off, yet the debugger still breaks. When I continue I get a YSOD, and an Elmah error log, but it seems HandleError is doing nothing.
JUST IN I didn't think I had to have custom errors turned on, as I thought that was only for 'my' unhandled errors.
I have HandleError attribute working normally, however:
I have a jqueryui dialog that displays a partial view. If i generate an error in this action the dialog just remains blank and no redirect to the Error.aspx page.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.Threading.ThreadAbortException: Thread was being aborted.
Source Error:
An unhandled exception was generated during the execution of the current web request. Information regarding the origin and location of the exception can be identified using the exception stack trace below.
I even created a global.asax file and on the Application_Error event, I wrote a code that would email me the error (and i'm not getting an email regarding that error when I get the error shown above). I know for a fact that the thread is going inside the "try" statement because I send emails to myself whenever it finishes certain codes inside of it. So how come I'm getting that error in my browser instead of it being handled in my "catch" statement? I have two problems here, one, why is the exception not going to my "catch" statement, and two, why am I getting that error in the first place.
3. Data Access Layer to do the dealing with the database.
Now i have a Contacts page from where i can add a new contact to the database.So to add a New Contact i fill in all the required details and then call a Add Method (residing in the BLL) from the page, which in turn call a Add Method residing in the DAL.this method in the DAL returns the Current Identity of the record which is then return back to the BLL method and finally delivered on the page.this is fine. but what if a get an exception how do i handle it properly because the method in DAL has a return type of int and i dont want to throw another error!! coz other wise i will have to write try catch in almost all the methods.
//something like this public int AddMethod(ContactClass contactObj) { int result = 0;[code]...
rather i want to show the user a user-friendly message which they can easily understand and in the mean while i will send a mail to myself documenting the Error that just occurred.how can i implement my custom exception classes.
i am almost finished up with a website and i have used this try catch block only in few places. now what i want is that i want to catch all the exception so that i can report the same through mail.. is it possible in any way to catch all the exception in one place and mail it cause now writing this block everywhere will be a kind of tedious process?
I have tried this on two different controller methods now, and both times, even if the linq2sql doesn't allow the data to be saved, the code never jumps into the catch block.
I've watched the noun object in the middle of the trace, and the isvalid property is false, but the modelstate isvalid is true. Either way, the code never jumps into the catch block.I'm pulling my hair out about this. I feel like it will be something really silly.
The code all works similar to nerd dinner.
NounRepository nounRepository = new NounRepository(); Noun noun = new Noun(); try[code]...
I'd rather not have to add code in this manner though, as it seems like an unnecessary duplication.
In Asp.net (c#),i'm not able to catch exception(FileNotFoundException) properly... i don't know the reason..Actually File s not there..But catch statement fails to catch the exception..here is the code..
public static List<Customer> GetCustomers(int maximumRows, int startRowIndex) { try { ... some select to database here... } catch (Exception ex) { Utils.LogError(ex); throw ex; } }
Now let's imagine that GetCustomers for some reason throws an exception. How could i catch this exception and handle it? I know i can use Application_Error, but i would like to catch this exception somehow on my page and show some friendly message to the user.
A developer has created a custom control in ASP.NET using VB.NET. The custom control uses a repeater. In certain scenarios, the rpt_ItemDataBound event is encountering a data error. My goal is rather than having the user see the yellow screen of death, give the user a friendlier error explaining exactly what the data error is. I figured I would be able to use a Try/Catch block as shown below throw the exception, however, it appears that the event has nowhere to be thrown to and stops executing at the "End Try" line.
Protected Sub rpt_ItemDataBound(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.RepeaterItemEventArgs) Handles rpt1.ItemDataBound, rpt2.ItemDataBound Try ProcessBadData... Catch ex As Exception Throw ex End Try End Sub
In VB.NET, I can find where the repeater's DataSource is being set, however, I can not find a DataBind event. how I can capture the exception in this ASCX control so I can report it to the user? Edit: The stack trace looks like this. There is another repeater within the repeater that is actually causing the error (rptOther) and I'm able to catch the error, but I can only throw it to the rpt_ItemDataBound. I can't figure out how rpt_ItemDataBound is getting called without a DataBind event.

I need to create a small web application. The first thing I need to do is to develop the login, logout and user session management functionality. I wanted to use a masterpage and a usercontrol for this purpose. When a user open the page and IS LOGGED IN, the usercontrol should something like this: "Hello Username! <a>Logout</a>" And if he is NOT LOGGED IN, the Usercontrol should show something like this "Login | Logout"
When he clicks on the Login Button the Login-page should be opened. How can I build a Usercontrol which does the above thing. (I have never build a usercontrol and used it in a masterpage before!) The second problem is a little bit komplexer: What happens if the user idles some times and after that time (for example 30minutes) comes back to his pc and wants to execute an action in the web application. Normally he should get an session timeout asp.net exception. I don't want that the user sees this asp.net errorpage, I want to redirect him to the Login Page and he should relogin and gets an error message shown something like "You were timed out. Please login again".
I created a simple data access layer in the dll and reference it in my web app. How can I point the error to the user that his code in this line has an exception. currently, when i input a nonexisting table it will popup an error "invalid object name table_name" and points the my code throw exception inside my dll. I want it to point out to the user code that uses my function that creates an error.
Line 92: Dim ds As DataSet = DAL.Dal.ExecuteDataset("SELECT * FROM table_nam", "DBConnectionString")
while doing debugging i found a blue dotted corner around catch block, while hovering it is showing system.exception...what does it mean and what to do
public static void Test() { try { OpenConnectionToDatabase(); //Opens a connection to Oracle DB } catch(Exception e) { e.Data.Add("Query:", command.CommandText); throw e; } }
When this code is executed when the Database server is being shutdown and the communication is disrupted, .NET throws the following error: Item has already been added. Key in dictionary: 'Query:' Key being added: 'Query:' at System.Collections.ListDictionaryInternal.Add(Object key, Object value) How can this be?
We are using renderaction provided by MVC futures. We've noticed that HttpExceptions in child action methods are not propagated to the parent action. Even though a fragment has failed, we still see the parent request resulting in a 200, and this throws our error handling for a toss.
I have a weird situation here. Using VS2010 and the MVC2 application template, I'm trying to set up error handling, but it refuses to work... Even with a simple controller throwing an exception in the index:
[Code]....
And <customErrors mode ="On"></customErrors> in the web.config file, MVC breaks into the code and tells me that "Exception was unhandled by user code". The default Error.aspx (static text only) is located in /Views/Shared, and I've even removed the login partial view from the master page.
I have a code which reads from a database and loads all feeds in it. Occassionaly I will get errors when the feeds are not responding. The error is happening on this line of code:
[Code]....
How do I add in a code that if the read above fails, ignore and proceed to next data row in the SQLDataReader ?
I'm using a static Timer in my Global.asax to run a method at regular intervals. When the method throws an exception, my application is stopped. I have used an empty catch to prevent exceptions from stopping the application something like below code. Is there a disadvantage to use such an approach?
i have a datagrid control which displays users created using sqlMembership..it has a row deleting event which is only accessed by administrators here is the code..
[Code]....
my problem here is to catch the securityexception and display in label
A first chance exception of type 'System.Threading.ThreadAbortException' occurred in mscorlib.dll An exception of type 'System.Threading.ThreadAbortException' occurred in mscorlib.dll but was not handled in user code
After banging my head because i could find where the exception came for and global.asax didn't get hit i found that it's from server.transfer and is a known bug. The alternative i read about is server.execute.However if i do this then the next page fires multiple javascript exceptions and a gridview i have is breaking of and the rows appear half at the left page corner and half inside the gridview!!
For now i just put a try catch on the server.transfer although the exception will not affect the application even if i don't use try catch. I also see that the exception is happening again even if i put try catch but with different dll: A first chance exception of type 'System.Threading.ThreadAbortException' occurred in App_Web_benglxq1.dll An exception of type 'System.Threading.ThreadAbortException' occurred in App_Web_benglxq1.dll but was not handled in user code Now what on earth is benglxq1.dll i don't know. What i know is that i'm leaving an exception to run and i don't like that. This is the js error when i use server.transfer btw: Microsoft JScript runtime error: Sys.ArgumentTypeException: Object of type 'Sys._Application' cannot be converted to type 'Sys._Application'.
