ASMX :: Implement Transaction With WCF Service?
Sep 21, 2010
We have a common WCF service Which takes stored procedure name and value as parameters from .ASPx page and execute in Database. In some cases, We need to execute 3-4 stored procedure in Sequence. Here, If any stored procedure fails then we need to rollback. How can we implement Transaction with WCF service.

I'am using enterprise library data access block in my asp.net application. I want to implement transaction from the Business logic layer, across multiple stored procs. Entlib opens a new connection for database access. Does using Transaction Scope in the following way lead to distributed transaction?
using (TransactionScope scope = new TransactionScope(TransactionScopeOption.Required))
{
// calling necessary DAL methods
scope.Complete();
}
Is there better methods to implement transaction from BLL?

I need to run 5 different WCF methods but within a transaction. Is this possible in WCF? How can I do this in WCf, if it's possible?
The WCF methods will be called from the web service client, which could be an ASP.Net app or Winfoms app.

it may sound a bit newbish question.We have a web service that comunicates with the database and exposes web methods that enables the application to access the database. Each method does only one operation (Insert, Update or Delete). What I need to do is create a transaction that will be consisted of multiple calls to the database, meaning multiple calls of more then one web methods. Can I do that? (I read that if the web method does not throw exception - or ContextUtil.SetAbort() is not called - the transaction will be commited automatically when the web method finishes executing, which I don't want to happen because I want to call another web method in the same transaction, and then manually commit the transaction)

A customer reported that our asmx web service is continually increasing in memory (mem usage as well as private bytes). We are able to reproduce the problem in our lab with Windows 2003 Server SP2 (fully patched) on some of the machines. The customer is using Windows 2008.
We created a Hello World web service targeting the 2.0 framework built under VS2005 SP1 and a test client that continues to call it. The memory increases steadily - approximately 40K per client request. If the test app is paused, the memory remains the same. When it is closed, the memory drops. Explicit calling of GC.Collect does not drop the memory.
We have run the memory profiler on the service and the leak is all native memory. We have uninstalled/re-installed the Framework on one of the machines but no difference. To our knowledge all of the security and IIS settings are not modified. We have compared app pool, default web site and virtual directory properties to machines that have no problem and they are identical.

I've got all of my ASP.NET requests wrapped in a Session and a Transaction that gets commited only at the very end of the request. At some point during execution of the request, I would like to insert an object and make it visible to other potential threads - i.e. split the insertion into a new transaction, commit that transaction, and move on. The reason is that the request in question hits an API that then chain hits another one of my pages (near-synchronously) to let me know that it processed, and thus double submits a transaction record, because the original request had not yet finished, and thus not committed the transaction record.
So I've tried wrapping the insertion code with a new SessionScope, TransactionScope(TransactionMode.New), combination of both, flushing everything manually, etc. However, when I call Refresh on the object I'm still getting the old object state. Here's some code sample for what I'm seeing:
Post outsidePost = Post.Find(id); // status of this post is Status.Old
using (TransactionScope transaction = new TransactionScope(TransactionMode.New))
{
Post p = Post.Find(id);
p.Status = Status.New; // new status set here
p.Update();
SessionScope.Current.Flush();
transaction.Flush();
transaction.VoteCommit();
}
outsidePost.Refresh();
// refresh doesn't get the new status, status is still Status.Old

Is it possible to run a web service as a particular user/service account in the same way a Windows service can?I have a service account used for connecting to the DB and want to run the webservice under this account as the users using the webservice won't have DB access.The way I see to do it is to include the Impersonate option in the Web.config file, but is there any better way to do this?

My WCF Client calls my WCF Service which then calls ASMX Web Service. The problem is i have configured my wcf client and wcf service to windows credentials type but when wcf service calls asmx service the user credentials (default windowsidentity) is not passed to asmx service.
In WCF Service i am able to get user identity by using : Thread.CurrentPrincipal.Identity.Name;
WCF Service - i have disabled anonymous access and enabled windows authentication. ASMX Web Service - i have disabled anonymous access and enabled windows authentication.

I am keep getting an error that "Service Error : wbsTest failed" where wbsTest is my webservice.
The error comes up frequently enough for the user - normally reproducible within a minute or so of working with an application.
A bit of background: An user is a remote user accessing application hosted on our servers over https. He is software firewalled and his connection isn't the fastest but it is responsive enough. When errors do not present themselves, page loads are fairly quick.

I have an ASMX web service that returns a large dataset. The objects are custom. That is, I am not sending DataSets or other complex objects. I need to chunk the response because it could be large. Following this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/278998, I have enabled chunked transfer encoding on the server. The client is java. I am doing something along these lines:
connection.setRequestProperty("Range", "bytes=" + rangeStart + "-" + rangeEnd);
int responseCode = connection.getResponseCode();
I see the request property come in on the server side. I see the server build the response. I am tracing the outbound soap, and it appears to be created. I expected to get a response code of 206 back when the response is large. But, I always get 200 (or an error if the request is too large, Request Entity too large on the BlackBerry).What do I need to do on the server side to chunk? I can explore moving to WCF if I have to, but, would rather avoid it. I am guessing I need to implement the chunking while serializing or possibly write a custom HTTP Handler to do it for me. The problem with the serializer approach is, the web service framework is doing the serilization for me. I can take this approach if needed.

I am writing a program to measure the latency(response round trip time) for a web service. I need to have this at client side.
My initial plan is to store the time at which request is sent and then calculate the difference in time when we recieve a response from the web service. Is this the correct way to measure latency of web service. This has some overhead because of storing time and all. How can this be done?
Another option is to attach a timestamp with the SOAP request. But the server should return the timestamp. This will not be possible in case of third party web services.
