Website Takes A Long Time To Start After Solution Build?

Apr 4, 2011

In development, our Asp.Net 4 website takes a fairly lengthy time to start after the project libraries are built

We do a fair amount of population of statics etc, but not enough to justify the length of time it takes the app to come up (probably 3-4 minutes)

We aren't building the website, just the libraries, and batch != true in the compilation element in the .config file.

I will try log some diagnostics, but any other pointers would be useful

Web Forms :: Webpage Takes Long Time To Load For The First Time?

Apr 30, 2010

I am working on a ASP.NET 2.0 application. It is hosted on IIS 6 on Windows 2003 server.

Few pages have jpeg images (around 50 images and 50 KB each). It takes long time to load the page for the first time. But when i open the same page for the second or third time it is faster.

why does a web page take long time to load for the first time?

Is it cached somewhere when it loads for the first time? Do we have any control over it?

Visual Studio :: Browser Refresh Takes A Long Time

Mar 9, 2011

Project

I'm running a single page (default.aspx) web site in Visual Studio 2010. I have a few other projects in the solution, but they're all taken out of the build queue at the moment. I'm using Visual Studio Development Server as the web server (I haven't tried IIS yet). I'm using the HTML5 Boilerplate from [URL] I'm testing in Chrome and IE8

Problem

Visual Studio 2010 is outputting "Debug" information to the Output window every time I refresh my browser. Whilst this isn't a problem in itself, it seems to be extremely slow in doing so... it takes around 4 seconds to show the page in full from initial refresh.

I've noticed that the "Script Documents" folder appears in my solution view, and some files (notably JS files) seem to take a while to show up. I've tried removing all the JS and CSS file references from my page, but it still does it.

So, to troubleshoot I've created an index.aspx page with no content apart from the generic ASP.Net template code, set this as the start page, but it still takes just as long to load up as the other page.

As a last resort, I've created a new project and tried it with no changes to the default page - still the same, takes a few seconds to finish loading in either browser.

The strange thing is that this happens even when I stop debugging in Visual Studio and browse directly to the URL on the ASP.NET Development server.

Output Windows contents when page is refreshed

Stop Debugging Web Application On IIS In VS2010 Takes Long Time?

Jan 3, 2011

Whenever I stop debugging an ASP.NET IIS web application it seems to take very long before VS2010 becomes responsive again (2 or 3 minutes). This happens when I close Internet Explorer 9 (which stops the debugging session), stop debugging in VS (which closes the browser) or when I detach the debugger from the debugging menu (which leaves the browser open).

My CPU time for devenv.exe goes up to 25% during this period of time. I use the professional edition (no intellitrace). Starting without debugging performs ok when I close the browser. I have some add-ins and extensions installed like TestDriven.NET, Resharper, PowerCommands, Productivity Power Tools, VisualSVN,...

DataSource Controls :: SQL Server First Full Text Search Takes A Long Time To Return Results?

May 19, 2010

I am working on a website hosted with GoDaddy, SQL Server 2005. I have a table in my SQL Server database with a full-text index. On my website, a user can type in search terms and the terms are then passed to a stored procedure in the database which performs the search. The first search takes about 45 seconds to get results. Subsequent searches return results immediately. I found a description of this problem in a Microsoft knowledgebase article:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/915850/en-usGoDaddy tech support says I need to purchase a dedicated server to make the changes suggested in this article.Surely there is some other solution. Does anyone know how to avoid this delay without changing the server configuration?

Visual Studio 2010 - Upgrade Seems To Be Taking A Very Long Time To Start?

Oct 13, 2010

At work I'm tryhing to upgrade an ASP.NET 2.0 app (which we wrote using VB.NET 2005) to ASP.NET 4.0. I had a few problems during the upgrade, but eventually worked them all out. At the end of the day I decided to give it a quick compile and see if I'd get the start page, so I hit F5 in VS 2010. I left it that way, and man was it acting weird. VS 2010 wasn't responding to anything. If I hovered the mouse over VS 2010's minimize or close buttons, in the upper right corner, then those buttons were flashing very rapidly. I'm not sure what was going on. After waiting 15 minutes to see if it would come up, I decided to try clicking on the close button. Nothing happened. Eventually, I had to leave (I take public transit, and I have to leave when the bus comes)But what I want to know is this, is this pretty standard behavior? Does it normally take this long to do this? This website is of modest size (<100 pages).

(Later) When I came into work today, 8 hours later, VS 2010 was still doing whatever the heck it was doing, but basically it wasn't responding to anything.

However, I notice that there are times when I run the application, and it takes over five minutes to display the login screen, or I have to stop and start the application in order to display the login screen . Does anyone have an idea what may cause this issue?

Visual Studio :: Saving Aspx File In Source View Mode Takes Too Long?

Jun 30, 2010

saving my aspx file takes too long, it has some nested tables, but it is nothing huge, it has like 50+ overall controls on the form. When I hit the save button, it takes a few minutes and drives cpu crazy, so I am guessing it is doing something in the background.

So, what is the reason, any clues how to speed this up?

I am using Vs.Net 2010 Ultimate

Visual Studio :: 2008 Takes Forever To Start Debugging?

May 5, 2010

I have a solution I have been working on over the last few weeks with a 3 or 4 projects in that used to build and begin debugging in under 10 seconds. The solution contains 3 dll's and 1 mvc project.

As of today, it takes about 2 minutes to start debugging, it keeps pausing on "loading symbols for ccpCodeProvider.dll".

I'm debugging on the internal vs development server, and I haven't changed anything since yesterday?I haven't ever used symbols before, and I'm not trying to debug the framework or anything, I just want my stupid web project to run.I created a new solution from scratch and added a random console app, and that also takes forever to debug.

HttpHandlers / Modules :: Cache Images - Page Takes To Long Due To Images Not Caching?

Mar 31, 2010

I've been trying to get image caching working for the last 8 hours and I keep the same problem time and time again, I'm trying to cache Images at the moment and then when thats succesful, apply this to cache my js and css files. I have at the moment Sql Dependancy caching working on my dynamic pages but the page still takes to long due to images not caching.

What I have tried is going to IIS7 Management and adding HTTP Response Header for the images folder and setting various things for the cache control.i dont care how long it caches it on the client or on the proxy servers i just would like it to check when the file was modified and compare it with the one in the client or proxy cache and if they are different then fetch the new image which has been ftp up. i could solve this by changing the image name but the thing is the image name is generated when they are ftp'd to the site by an application and the name is a direct reference to the product so i cant change the name each time, as it would mean making a lot of otherpages accross the board.

so What i would like, is to set and expiry date of lets say 32 days or more on the images and then check to see if they have changed by date modified or some other way of checking(Etags maybe) I'm not sure, if they have changed on the server then redownload and recache them, I tried using post-check and pre-check together but that just permantly cached them, so when i change the image the only way it would display the new image is to just hit F5.

In Brief, how can i Cache images, on the client machine/ proxy cache and recache them when the modified date of the file has changed.

C# - Visual Studio 2010: How To Enforce Build Order Of Projects In A Solution

Sep 6, 2010

I had no problem with this in Visual Studio 2008 but it seems that VS 2010 is having an issue, and I'm betting it's probably me.I have a solution with an ASP.NET Web Site Project and a few C# projects (BLL, DAL, Tests in NUnit). I have configured the build process for the test project to automatically run NUnit to run the tests. I would like to ensure that the BLL and DAL projects build before the test project so that the tests will run against the latest compiled version (yes, I know I could do this all in one project, but I'm choosing not to -- please bear with me :) )

So, I set the dependencies of the Test project to include the BLL, DAL, and Web Application projects, and the build order shows BLL, DAL, Web Application, and then Tests. However, I noticed that the BLL doesn't actually build when I build the Test project.Any idea what this could be or any option I might be missing to force the other projects to build when I build the Test project?

Web Forms :: Display Start And End Time Based On If Current Time Falls In Range

Examples:

If the current time is 8:46am, label startTime would return "8am" and label endTime would return "9am"
If the current time is 10:01pm, label startTime returns "10pm" and label endTime returns "11pm"
If the current time is 12:59am, label startTime returns "12am" and label endTime returns "1am"

I have been working with the C# TimeRange class but not getting what I need.

Defining Default Start Time And End Time (DateTime Manipulation)

Mar 26, 2010

Our business case requires that a Start Time and End Time must be defined for each Organization involved in the business model. For example; some organizations have their working hours from 8:00AM to 5:00PM and others from 9:00 to 6:00PM. While creating a new Event on our calendar these should be queried from the database (StartTime and EndTime) and setting these as default. My questions are:

1) How should I save these times since DateTime requires a Date in front of it and there's no Time column format on SQL Server (Varchar? Number?). If using one of these types how to I concatenate these to a DateTime variable?

2) If the column should be DateTime, how do I concatenate it to replace the column's Date with Today's date and replace the Time with the time specified for that? Let me be more clear:

Default values saved in the database: StartTime = "2010-01-01 8:00AM" EndTime = "2010-01-01 5:00PM" In my code after querying, my local variables would be populated and replaced by: OrgStartHour = "2010-03-26 8:00AM" and OrgEndHour = "2010-03-26 5:00PM"

[Code]....

The code above works but I have no idea on how to replace/concatenate the "2010-01-01" with today's date while keeping the "8:00 AM" on it. :)
