Programming Logic / Get The Output From The Beginning String?

Apr 21, 2010

I had an interview recently, and had a question that I couldn't really answer

They gave me a string (One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven.....)

they wanted an output, something like:
Six, two, five, three......

(I'm not 100% sure of the exact strings) They wanted the logic flow I'd use to get the output from the beginning string.

Can anyone help me understand this flow and how it could be programmed?

Setting A Default Value -- Presentation Logic Or Business Logic?

Jun 18, 2010

I was wondering if setting a default value for a SelectList is considered to be presentation logic or business logic? For example, if a requirement is that an Employee cannot be saved without a Location, but 99% of the time the location that would be selected is a particular item -- say Atlanta. Because of this, the location SelectList should be defaulted to Atlanta when ever a entry screen for a new employee is displayed. Should I be defaulting the location in the model or in the view-model? One thing I realized is that the unit tests become awkward because in both cases, I'd be forced to test against a location that will always be present in production but I cannot create a unit test with my own test dataunless "Atlanta" was in the set of locations being used in the test.

Javascript - How Much Client-side Programming Is Needed When Doing Server-side Programming

Mar 16, 2011

but I am rather confused about what to invest in. I heard that server-side code translates into client-side code. So, if you have an .aspx file, it will be converted to HTML/CSS/JavaScript. I have experience with the latter three technologies put into a rather dull text file and rendered by a web browser. My question is how much HTML/CSS/Javascript coding would I have to do when server-side programming? In other words, can someone using ASP.NET program purely on the server side and not bother to write for the client side? Of course, I don't care about server-side being translated into client-side, but I am wondering if client-side programming needs to be done explicitly and to what degree.

Inject Output Of A User Control Into A String?

Mar 17, 2010

I currently work on an in-house 'CMS' that is fairly old. It has one 'content' field where the html of a CKEditor is saved and presented to each content page.

What I would like to do is be able to replace some special tags with the output of a control. So for example:

The content string would be

[Code]....

Then, when rendering the page, replace the '[%LatestNews(to=2010/01/01)%]' with the result of a user control. The user control may contain a asp:Repeater control or something that lists the required content.

Render Output To String - Response.Flush Breaking Page Caching

Feb 3, 2010

I have some code that is used to replace certain page output with other text. The way I accomplish this is by setting the Response.Filter to a Stream, Flushing the Response, and then reading that Stream back into a string. From there I can manipulate the string and output the resulting code. You can see the basic code for this over at [URL] However, I noticed that Page Caching no longer works after the first Response.Flush call.

I put together a simple ASP.NET WebApp as an example. I have a Default.aspx with an @OutputCache set for 30 seconds. All this does is output DateTime.Now.ToLongTimeString(). I override Render. If I do a Response.Flush (even after the base.Render) the page does not get cached. This is regardless of any programmatic cacheability that I set. So it seems that Response.Flush completely undermines any page caching in use. Why is this?

extra credit: is there a way to accomplish what I want (render output to a string) that will not result in Page Cache getting bypassed?

ASPX Page:

<%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="Default.aspx.cs" Inherits="TestCacheVsFlush._Default" %>
<%@ OutputCache Duration="30" VaryByParam="none" %>
<%= DateTime.Now.ToLongTimeString() %>

Code-behind (Page is Cached):
protected override void Render(HtmlTextWriter writer)
{
base.Render(writer);
}
Code-behind (Page is not cached):
protected override void Render(HtmlTextWriter writer)
{
base.Render(writer);
Response.Flush();
}
Code-behind (Page still is not cached):
protected override void Render(HtmlTextWriter writer)
{
base.Render(writer);
Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.Server);
Response.Cache.SetExpires(DateTime.Now.AddSeconds(30));
Response.Flush();
}

Set Up SSRS From The Very Beginning For An .NET App?

I'm pretty familiar with ASP.NET, and am currently writing an MVC app in ASP.NET.I'm at the point where I need to integrate reports into my application.The option I chose to go with (and I'm flexible on this) is SSRS.I have zero experience in SSRS and it seems that there are a LOT of steps involved in getting that set up, from installing the Report Server, configuring the Report Server, creating a report project in Business Intelligence Development Studio, and publishing the report to the Report Server. 1.) Set up and install SSRS properly. I'm using SQL Server 2008. (Not R2).2.) Creating and publishing a report to the Report Server.3.) Being able to access this report from my ASP.NET web application.

Web Forms :: Browser Output Doesn't Look Like Web Developer Output Using Nested Master Pages And Css Stylesheets

Apr 18, 2010

First off, suggest better ways if you want rather than patch up this code. I am just starting this project and it is first time I have tried to code a web site so anything you suggest is very much welcomed. I have spent the last 2 and 1/2 days trying to find workable answers to this but none I have found and tried seem to fit. If needed I can email screens shots or code. I am trying to construct a website that will have the same main theme throughout as far as the header, navbars sitemap, and footer go. Naturally the content will vary from page to page. I want to use a single master page and css stylesheet for this main theme and I will change the content format as needed per page because each page may vary somewhat.

However, about 15 of the pages will all use the same format for their content and this format will differ from the rest of the site but the format of the main theme will stay the same. So I am trying to create a nested master page to use to format the just the content area for all these pages while retaining the main theme for the header, etc.. I believe I should use a separate css file with the nested master page to handle the formatting of the content areas for these 15 pages. I have code that looks like it works when viewed in web developer but design view but does not work when viewd through a browser (IE, Chrome, Firefox). So far I have the following done in web developer.

If it helps the code and screen shots follow. Master Page called "Parent.master". For all theme throughout site Nested Master Page called "Lab.master". For the 15 like pages Primary stylesheet file for main theme called "StylesheetNew.css" For site theme Secondary stylesheet file to syle the 15 like formatted pages. It is called Labmaster.css Labs.apsx file to use as first of the 15 like pages.
Finally screens shots from web developer and browser. Sorry try as I might I could not capture screenshots and put them into this post. The problem is that web developer shows all the area (many lines high) with gray background and with the XXX text that I want to allocate for content in the 15 pages. Yet all the browser show is one line of text o a white background followed by the footer. It looks like the LabStyleSheet works in Web Developer but not in a browser.

Javascript - __doPostBack Rendered After Beginning Or Near End Of Form Tag

Aug 18, 2010

I'm trying to manually call the ASP.NET (3.5) javascript postback function __doPostBack from my javascript code. The problem is that the postback script block, that is normally rendered right after the beginning of the <form> tag (and the hidden fields), is occasionally rendered near the closing </form> tag. Is there any way to force it to be rendered near the beginning of the form tag? Also, how does ASP.NET decide when/where to render the postback client script block?

Edit > Additional Info: The javascript code resides inside a user control that references the __doPostBack function. The control itself does not contain any 'postback controls' that would call that function. (When I mention 'postback controls', I mean ASP.net controls that call the __doPostBack function and not the asp.net ImageButton and Button controls)

Based on what I've observed and @Brian's comment on the dependency of the postback script on the availability of 'postback controls' on the page, I've found that when the page contains controls that cause postback, the __doPostBack script block is rendered after the opening <form> tag and when there are none, it renders them near the closing </form> tag (or according to this it's not even supposed to be rendered). Now it would make sense for ASP.NET not to render the postback script if there are no controls that require it, but the apparent position of the script near the closing tag is the one that still eludes me. I haven't been able to find any documentation that suggests this behavior. All I've been able to find was this.

Add a 'postback control' and set its visibility to hidden via css (not the Visible property). eg. <asp:LinkButton ID="RequirePostBackScriptLink" runat="server" style="display:none;" /> (this is what I'm using) Add the control to the Page.RegisterRequiresPostBack and implement the IPostBackDataHandler interface.

Finally, as @Jonathan_Bates mentioned in his post, the proper thing to do is to wrap the reference to __doPostBack inside a function that is an event handler to load (or ready if you're using jquery). That way, there wouldn't be a need to depend on the actual placement of the __doPostBack script.
