ADO.NET :: Linq And Webservices / Create A Webservice Method Using LINQ Technology And To Populate A Dropdown In a Form?

Oct 6, 2010

I am struggling to create a webservice method using LINQ technology and to populate a dropdown in a form. Here is the Webservice code.

[WebMethod]

public
string[] GetAllCountries()
{
LinqClassesDataContext db =
new
LinqClassesDataContext();
var q =
from c
in db.ListContinents()select
c;
return q.ToList() ;
}

And here is the form code behind

protectedvoid
Page_Load(object sender,
EventArgs e)
{
WSClass WS =
new
WSClass();//bool
ds = WS.GetAllCountries();
var v = WS.GetAllCountries();
ddlContinent.DataSource = v;
ddlContinent.DataBind();
}

Paging Not Working With ListView And WebService Using Linq

Dec 20, 2010

I have a simple page that looks up contacts using a webservice with a single method written in Linq. On the page, I have both a gridview and a listview with a DataPager to compare the two. I can get paging working just fine with the gridview, but the Linq code has to return all of the data on each call and let the web page pick out only a page's worth... not the best solution. I have been told that a ListView will solve this problem, but all the examples I have been able to find have the Linq code on the web page instead of in a separate layer (e.g. a webservice). Ideally, I should be able to tell the web service to bring back a specific page worth of data (starting record number and number of rows), but how do I get the ListView (or the DataPager) to fire an event that asks for this data?

Here is the ASPX code:
<asp:ListView ID="listPersons" runat="server"> <LayoutTemplate>
<table> <thread> <tr> <th> Site ID </th> <th> PersonID </th>
<th> Person Name </th> </thead> <tbody>
<asp:PlaceHolder ID="itemPlaceholder" runat="server" /> </tbody> </table>
<asp:DataPager ID="Pager1" runat="server" PagedControlID="listPersons" PageSize="5" > <Fields>
<asp:NextPreviousPagerField ShowFirstPageButton="true" ShowPreviousPageButton="true" ShowNextPageButton="false" ShowLastPageButton="false" /> <asp:NumericPagerField />
<asp:NextPreviousPagerField ShowFirstPageButton="false" ShowPreviousPageButton="false" ShowNextPageButton="true" ShowLastPageButton="true" />
</Fields> </asp:DataPager> </LayoutTemplate> <ItemTemplate><tr> <td> <%# Eval("SiteID") %>
</td> <td> <%# Eval("PersonID") %> </td> <td> <%# Eval("PersonName") %> </td>
</tr> </ItemTemplate> <EmptyDataTemplate> No data found... </EmptyDataTemplate> </asp:ListView>

Here's the code behind:
private void DoList(string Match) {
ContactsService cs = new ContactsService();
listPersons.DataSource = cs.Find(Match, 100 ); listPersons.DataBind(); }
and the web serivice:
[WebMethod]
public List<Person>Find(string Match, int Count) { if (Count < 5) Count = 5;
using (DataLayer.ContactsDataContext context = new ContactsDataContext()) {
var Persons = from p in context.Persons where p.PersonName.Contains(Match)
orderby p.LastName, p.FirstName select new Person() {
SiteID = p.SiteID, PersonID = p.PersonID, PersonName = p.PersonName, };
return Persons.Take(Count).ToList(); } }

DataSource Controls :: LINQ Load Collection To Populate Dropdownlist?

Apr 5, 2010

I have a partial class extending my Entity Model. I'd like to write a method that returns a collection of types from my entity framework model. For example, I'd like to get all the states to populate a drop down list. So I've written a method called getallstates(), similar to the example below:

[Code]....

I tried returning a list of Objects, and a list of states to my calling method to be used to bind to a drop down list. However I get an error that:

Server Error in Application. Unable to cast object of type 'System.Data.Objects.ObjectQuery to type 'System.Collections.Generic.List`1[System.Object]'.

What should my return type be for this function?

ADO.NET :: EF4 / Linq Eager Loading With Include Fails To Populate All Results?

Aug 25, 2010

I'm trying out EF4 as part of a .Net 4.0 WCF service. The aim of the service is to return document data as an array of entity objects to any of our ASP.Net apps. The apps are still in .Net 2.0. Due to the nature of the solution I've disabled LazyLoading at context level. I started with this:

[Code]....

Everything works ok, I receive the correct number of populated objects. However when I add an Include into my query to allow us to pickup fields from a related table that has a defined navigation only the first record is returned fully populated to a calling application:

[Code]....

The array is the correct size but all elements after the first are blank, default placeholders. Its like using the Include has reverted to LazyLoading and I can't seem to kick it into line.

C# - Bind The Values Without Duplicates From Database Into Dropdown Using LINQ?

Apr 2, 2011

I have a small issue binding the values into a dropdown using LINQ in ASP.NET code-behind.

var clientquer = from i in Entity.New_Bank select i;
//var q = (from s in names
// select s).Distinct();
// var getlendername = (from db in mortgageentity.New_Lender group db by db.Bank_Name into t select t.Key).ToList();
if (clientquer.Count() > 0)
{
ddlbankname.DataSource = clientquer.ToList();
ddlbankname.DataValueField = "Bank_ID2";
ddlbankname.DataTextField = "Bank_Name";
ddlbankname.DataBind();
}

It is binding with duplicate values, but I don't want bind duplicate values. I'm trying to solve this by using a group by clause, but it is not working.

Calling Linq To SQL Method In Web Service With JQuery?

Jan 24, 2010

I have a test web service called: MySimpleService.svc with a method called:GetUserNamesByInitials. below is the Linq to SQL code:

[OperationContract]
public static string GetUserNamesByInitials(string initials)
{
string result = ""; [code]...

what I do is to type the user id in one textbox (TextBox3) and when I press the Tab key the result is shown in another textbox(TextBox4).
The jQuery call works well with other methods that do not call the database, for example using this other web service method it works:

[OperationContract] public string ParameterizedConnectionTest(string word)
{
return string.Format("You entered the word: {0}", word);
}

However with the Linq method it just does not work.

Failure To Compile Linq Method In App_Code?

Jan 14, 2010

I've been scratching my head for what seems like ages. I'm sure its really simple to fix but I can't see it.

I have a class in App_Code that uses a bit of Linq.

var siteMap = SiteMapWrapper.BuildSiteMap(true);
var currentTopLevelParent = siteMap.Single(s => s.IsActive);
if (currentTopLevelParent != null)

I've developed this locally and all works fine. When I transfer to IIS hosting the same class fails to compile. I receive:

does not contain a definition for 'Single' and no extension method 'Single' accepting a first argument of type 'SiteMapWrapper' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)

I confirmed that the virtual dir is running .NET 2.0 as it should. I also confirmed that the correct assemblies are being loaded in the web.config.

<compilation debug="true">
<assemblies>
<add assembly="System.Core, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=B77A5C561934E089"/>

Eventhoguh i forcibly write a method and trying to access the fields, It is giving the below error for the first join in query. Rest of the lines are fine.

What is the reason behind it.

The errro: "Error 2 'LINQ2DB.SP_VS_OP' does not contain a definition for 'Field' and the best extension method overload 'System.Data.DataRowExtensions.Field<T>(System.Data.DataRow, string)' has some invalid arguments"

What is the meaningof the error. Shall i do any other changes in the query line?

AJAX :: Calling Webservices From Javascript: OnError Method, How To Identify The Method

Aug 26, 2010

I have an application that has JS calling ASMX files to do asyncronous requests, using ASP.NET AJAX.

The problem is that I use always the same "onError" function, and now I don't know how to identify the method that rised the error, and it is giving me a lot of problems to debug errors. The parameter "data" of the onError method does not give enough information, for
example:

en System.ComponentModel.BaseNumberConverter.ConvertFrom(ITypeDescriptorContext context, CultureInfo culture, Object value)
en System.Web.Script.Serialization.ObjectConverter.ConvertObjectToTypeInternal(Object o, Type type, JavaScriptSerializer serializer, Boolean throwOnError, Object& convertedObject)
en System.Web.Script.Serialization.ObjectConverter.ConvertObjectToTypeMain(Object o, Type type, JavaScriptSerializer serializer, Boolean throwOnError, Object& convertedObject)
en System.Web.Script.Serialization.ObjectConverter.ConvertObjectToType(Object o, Type type, JavaScriptSerializer serializer)
en System.Web.Script.Services.WebServiceMethodData.StrongTypeParameters(IDictionary`2 rawParams)
en System.Web.Script.Services.WebServiceMethodData.CallMethodFromRawParams(Object target, IDictionary`2 parameters)
en System.Web.Script.Services.RestHandler.InvokeMethod(HttpContext context, WebServiceMethodData methodData, IDictionary`2 rawParams)
en System.Web.Script.Services.RestHandler.ExecuteWebServiceCall(HttpContext context, WebServiceMethodData methodData)

Is there any way to know the webmethod that raised the error?
