ADO.NET :: Properly Closing Connection To SQL

Jan 17, 2011

I'm trying to make sure a block of code behind properly closes a connection to SQL after it's finished. But when I add the line "cmd.Connection.Close();" Visual Studio underlines "cmd" in green and says "unreachable code detected" What does that mean and how do I correct it?

ADO.NET :: Closing Sql Connection Properly And Handle Errors?

Mar 31, 2011

This morning I found myself dealing with A SQL POOLING ERROR Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached. I did fix this with resetting my pooling and setting a pooling max =100 Anyway now Im starting to rethink how I open connections, dealing with errors and proper closing of connections Would you say this code below is a good way of opening, closing connections (even when errors occurred)

Dim Connection As SqlConnection
Dim myConn As String = (ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("MyConnString").ConnectionString)
Connection = New SqlConnection(myConn)
Try
Dim DBCommand As SqlCommand
Dim dt As New DataTable()
Dim myDataSet As New DataSet
Connection.Open()
DBCommand = New SqlCommand("GetAllCategories_", Connection)
DBCommand.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
DBCommand.Parameters.Add("@HomePageID", SqlDbType.Int).Value = HiddenChosenVirtualMainID.Value
Dim mySqlAdapter As New SqlDataAdapter(DBCommand)
mySqlAdapter.Fill(dt)
SecondLevelChildDatalist.DataSource = dt
SecondLevelChildDatalist.DataBind()
Catch ex As Exception
'Error goes here
SqlConnection.ClearAllPools()
Finally
'close the connction
Connection.Close()
Connection.Dispose()
End Try

SQL Server :: Implications Of Not Closing An Open Connection Declared Locally?

Oct 5, 2010

I was wondering about something. I'm supporting a .NET C# application which has a number of database connections declared locally as IDbConnection with MS SQL Server and NHibernate. These connections are declared locally and not explicitly closed after a specific operation is performed. Are these connections automatically closed after the local method is executed, or could these connections be floating around somewhere? We're having semaphore max out problems, and I'm trying to see if this may be the culprit. I'm doubtful, as I believe these connections would automatically close, but thought I'd throw out hte possibility.

WCF / ASMX :: Intermittant Error: "A Connection Attempt Failed Because The Connected Party Did Not Properly?

Aug 19, 2010

I'm having a doozy of a problem, and can't find a solution. I have a WFC Web Service installed to a pair of servers, and accessed through a load balancer. I am accessing the service from an ASP.NET client app, also via WCF. The Client is not load balanced.I'm getting an intermittant error:

(Inner Most Exception) System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond x.x.x.x:80(Middle Exception) System.Net.WebException: Unable to connect to the remote server(Outer Exception) System.ServiceModel.EndpointNotFoundException: Could not connect to http://<MYSite>/<MYApp>/<MYService>.svc.TCP error code 10060: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond x.x.x.x:80.

I can reproduce this error with about 20% reliability if I execute the exact same page request on the client from 2 browsers at the same time. When the problem occurs, the successful page request returns in about 5 seconds, and the failed page request returns in about 30 seconds.I'm guessing that there is some additional latency when the load balancer decides to switch my session to another server, and that is making some timeout setting on my client to be exceeded. I need to research this performance characteristic... any thoughtsbut its not my core question.My core question is... Exactly what setting can I tweak to increase the "period of time" the "connected party" is allows to "properly respond".This is the basicHttpBinding configuration I am using on both sides of the communication:

<basicHttpBinding>
<binding name="LongerTimeout"
sendTimeout="03:00:00"
maxReceivedMessageSize="2147483647"
maxBufferPoolSize="2147483647">
<readerQuotas maxArrayLength="2147483647" maxStringContentLength="2147483647"/>
</binding>
</basicHttpBinding>

I've seen some indication that setting the receiveTimeout value on the server may help, but I set this to 1 second in a test environment, and was unable to reproduce the problem, leads me to believe its not worth a production environment change to verify this.

Making Ado.net Connection Class Or Connection String In Web.config?

Oct 18, 2010

I am preparing for an Access2007 db conversion at the beginning of the year and would like to know what the best process would be for connecting to the sqlserver2005 database. I have read about adding the connection string to the web.config file. I have also read about using ADO.NET and put the connection information into a class and not the web.config file.

I would like to hear from others as to what you have used, are using, or plan on using for a webapp (vs2010), and why so I can get an understanding.

VS2010 - Connect To SQL Using Trusted Connection In Connection String

Aug 10, 2011

I have an ASP.Net website running on IIS7. The Application Pool is set to ASPv4 Classic.

Authentication Mode is set to ASP.Net Authentication & Windows Authentication

My question is, when I want to connect to SQL using a "trusted connection" in the Connection String, what user will actually be passed into SQL?

I thought it would pass my logon details, but it is coming back with an NT AUTHORITYANONYMOUS LOGON error, which seems to point towards it not passing in my logon.
