AJAX :: UpdatePanel Memory Leaks In IE

Oct 11, 2010

After researching why a page I have using an UpdatePanel to perform a refresh every 15 seconds was using up piles and piles of memory over time, I discovered that this is a "well-known" issue with the UpdatePanel not cleaning up properly in IE (some issue with reference counting in COM interop or some such). UpdatePanel does not seem to have this issue in Firefox (haven't confirmed the issue in other browsers). If this is a "well-known" issue, two questions:Is there a "well-known" workaround to this? I know that a full-page refresh will cause the memory to be cleaned up, but some pages may be up for a long time and I don't want to interrupt any user interaction with the page that may be going on. I will if it is required, but it is a sloppy, sloppy UI kluge... you know, one of those "as a self-respecting coder I hang my head in shame at what I have wrought" kind of kluges. Is there any effort being made to fix this? I've looked about, however, most articles on this do not make mention of even MS acknowledging bug status for this while I've seen many telling me why this is an issue, and how it's a "design" thing. I hear IE9 is supposed to take care of this... I guess what you'd call a non-issue, but it will only be available to Windows 7 users.

Unhooking Event Handlers Needed In To Prevent Memory Leaks?

Feb 17, 2011

Coming from WinForms/WPF I've learned the hard way that not remembering to unhook event handlers can lead to memory leaks.

Does this apply to Webapps too? It seems like when the request ends, everything (non-static) should be eligible for garbage collection. Is that true?

I remember jumping through all sorts of hoops to ensure that events got unhooked when an object goes out of scope, especially with multi-threading going on to ensure a responsive UI. Is all of that still necessarily in a webapp or is that one of the luxuries of working with a (mostly) RESTful model?

Configuration :: Test For Memory Leaks On A Website Running Locally?

Nov 14, 2010

The application pool randomly shuts down. I am assuming this is due to Rapid Fail Protection and errors are occuring that are triggering it. However... there are no errors being reported in the event logs. So my next inclination is to think of the possibilities of a memory leak. How do you test for memory leaks on a website running locally?

AJAX :: UpdatePanel Memory Leak IE8?

Nov 2, 2010

I created a site which fills an UpdatePanel with dynamically created buttons when clicking on an other button. Now every time I click the button the used memory increases. I already tried the workaround from http://www.crockford.com/javascript/memory/leak.html to remove old eventhandlers before updating the UpdatePanel. But the used memory still increase. Is there a problem with my code or is there an other workaround?

Here is the code of a sample aspx site which shows the problem: [Code]....

IIS And Ajax UpdatePanel Results In Extreme Memory Usage?

Nov 26, 2010

I have a update panel combined with gridview with sorting and paging.

I go into task manager to monitor the memory usage of the worker process (w3wp)

What I do is just click on the sort buttons rapidly.

With each click the memory of the process increases with about 2 mb

So I go from 30 mb memory usage to about 90. Then it stops at remains there, no memory is freed up. I am not using caching or session/application state.

What can be causing this, is there a setting in IIS to reduce the mem usage?

I also used .net profiler to examine my app memory usage: 4 mb, so what is the other 86 used for??? Even though it repots 4mb, in task manager it says 90 mb, so this leads me to believe that the rest is namanaged memory which must be used by IIS in some way.

Error Occurring When Using Wcf To Run Query - Memory Gates Checking Failed Because Of The Free Memory

May 21, 2010

I am building an asp.net application, using II6 on windows server 2003 (vps hosting).

I am confronted with an error I didn't receive on my development machine (windows 7, iis 7.5, 64 bit).

When my wcf service tries launching my query running against a local sql server this is the error I receive:

Memory gates checking failed because the free memory (43732992 bytes) is less than 5% of total memory. As a result, the service will not be available for incoming requests. To resolve this, either reduce the load on the machine or adjust the value of minFreeMemoryPercentageToActivateService on the serviceHostingEnvironment config element.

Error: Attempted To Read Or Write Protected Memory. This Is Often An Indication That Other Memory Is Corrupt?

Oct 11, 2010

I have both VS 2005 and 2008 installed on my machine. 2005 is fine. For 2008, literally any asp.net project I try to create gets this eror. I try stepping into the code, and the error occurs apparently before anything that I can trap is loaded. There is no information written to the event log. I have tried this with a "Hello World" webpage with nothing else going on. Seems unique to my Windows Server 2003 machine.

Attempted To Read Or Write Protected Memory. This Is Often An Indication That Other Memory?

Jan 26, 2011

I am maintaining C# .NET code written by somebody else, I get following exception few times,Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corruptThe code structure where I get the above exception is somethign like this,- it is using ref variables in following sequence,Variable-1 and variable-2 are local variables in App1, - App1: func1() which passes these variables reference to func2(), - App1: func2() passes same variables reference via .net remoting to another application (App2).-App2: does the same passes same received reference to another call 2 times.- The execption is occured while returning from App2.

(App1:func1(ref Var1, ref Var2) --> App1:func2(ref Var1, ref Var2) <---App1 .net remoting to App2--> App2:func3(ref Var1, ref Var2)--> App2:func4(ref Var1, ref Var2)-->variables getting updated and function returned to original caller)

My doubts are ,1. Is passing reference variables in such chain is correct? will it cause such exeption? Does .net support ref variable call directly?

When I hit the button in the upanProfileSearch it should bind the Data Items in the gridview in upanMemberList and here make a RowFilter on the text in upanProfileSearch. When I make a run to curser, I can see, it happens. It makes a RowFilter. but it doesn't update the gridview. Can anyone tell me why it doesn't update? I have UpdateMode="Always" and RenderMode="inline" on both UpdatePanels.

AJAX :: How To Change UpdatePanel Content From Another UpdatePanel

Jun 23, 2010

I have a dropdownlist, that causes a postback. On the SelectedIndexChanged event, is it possible to force a placeholder that is within a different UpdatePanel to change it's visibility?

For example, when the SelectedItem.Value of DropDownList1 is "1" then show Placeholder1, otherwise hide it.

What I am most interested in is how to configure the UpdatePanels to allow this.

AJAX :: How To Trigger Updatepanel Postback From Another Updatepanel

Mar 4, 2011

I have a web user control with one updatepanel (pnlUpdate_2), some controls and one apply button. I display the web user control as a modalpopup in my default page. In my default page i have an updatepanel (pnlUpdate_1) with a gridview and I modify that gridview with the apply button of the web user control. The web user control is for made a custom search of the gridview data. I have a problem with both updatepanels. If I set the updatemode as always in one of them (pnlUpdate_1) and the other as conditional (pnlUpdate_2), the pnlUpdate_1 make a postback in the pnlUpdate_2; I'm not an expert on this but I think that's why the pnlUpdate_2 disappear and reappear after postback of some controls in that updatepanel (not the apply button, it close the modal after postback). I try all the combinations and the problem persists. So I put both updatepanels as conditional and in some way it works; now the problem is that when I click the apply button in pnlUpdate_2 to modify the gridview in pnlUpdate_1 the pnlUpdate_1 not made the postback I get the pnlUpdate_2 postback when I use some control inside the pnlUpdate_1.

How can I postback the pnlUpdate1 from pnlUpdate_2 with the apply button?

DataSource Controls :: Memory Leak - Server Will Crash - Log A Ton Of SQL Errors Stating That It Is "out Of Memory"

Jul 27, 2010

I have a memory leak somewhere that I cant find. Every few days my server will crash, and just before that I log a ton of SQL errors stating that it is "out of memory".

I cant find it anywhere, all of my connections are being disposed like so:

[Code]....
Then I call the connection from my pages like so:[Code]....

That is all pretty straight forward. The connection is disposed because it is implementing the USING clause. I am opening the connection in my connection manager class, and not where it is being utilized?Or, could the problem be in the below method I am using to populate a SqlDataReader:[Code]....

Now, at first it appears as though this could be the problem because the Connection isn't part of a USING clause, however doesn't the 'Data.CommandBehavior.CloseConnection' pretty much do the same thing. This makes sure that the connection is closed when the reader is closed, right? Here is how I call that above reader from my login page code behind:[Code]....

So the DataReader will get closed even without the .Close() because it is in the USING, and the connection should get closed because I specified it in the ExecuteReader paramters right?

ANTS Memory Profiler - Which Memory Should Be Looking At?

I have downloaded the 14 day trial of ANTS Memory Profiler and have been playing with it to get a grip of what it's telling me. In the memory options on the timeline, I can see Bytes in All Heaps and Private Bytes etc but I am not sure which ones I should be focusing on to see where the memory spikes and doesn't go back down.I am profiling a ASP.NET website using ASP.NET 2.0.

Ajax - Changing Culture - To Get An Out Of Memory Exception?

Jan 21, 2010

I have a strange problem with ASP.NET. Several sites on my web server run the exact same application. The application has a page that contains a Tab Container from the Ajax Control Toolkit which in itself contains a Calendar control.

If I set my culture in the web.config to be:

<globalization culture="en-GB" uiCulture="en-GB" />

Then everything works fine. However, by changing this to:

<globalization culture="en-US" uiCulture="en-US" />

When attempting to load the page I get an out of memory exception and w3wp.exe seems to use all available memory.

AJAX :: UpdatePanel Conditional Update OnLoad Event / Updatepanel To Update On Queue?

Aug 25, 2010

i have a website with three UpdatePanel Control and inside of each UpdatePanels has ONE Gridview and a SqlDataSource Control.

all gridviews are connected to its own SqlDataSource Control. so technically when i run my website all gridviews automatically get their data from their respective SqlDataSource Control and display them accordingly.

but what i need to do is instead of letting all the update panels to load each gridview their data upon Onload event, i need the updatepanel to update on queue, (Technically changing the UpdateMode to Conditional does not solve my problem.) there will be an event which will trigger the updatepanel to update later.
