AJAX :: Implement Within An Existing Application / Slow Response?
Jan 31, 2011
I'm trying to implement AJAX within an existing application and it seems to be running slow.
I have 3 datallist that all have checkboxs. I have buttons that all users to check all checkbox for a specific datalist. I have an update panel around each datalist. When I check and uncheck it seems to be really slow. I also have 3 textboxes and 4
buttons within my update panel.
When I user uses this site it hides and shows different panels and that seems to be really slow when the users press a button. There is no database stuff happening when the slowness occurs.

Lets assume that I have my own business layer containing my business objects and my business services. And I have decided to create a "SilverLight Business Application" (with SL v 4.0) and I want to use my already used Business Layer from the SL application I plan to develop.
I know that I cannot include a project which is not a SL project.

I have a drop down list that hides a panel with a bunch of controls when a certain value is selected, and shows the panel again when some other value is selected. This works fine. However it's slow when running both on my local webserver and on my web host, and takes about 1-2 seconds. What could be the reason for this? The only thing I do is to check which value is selected and hides/shows the panel.

I have a download button on my website to download an application of mine. It works fine but I noticed people are clicking it repeatedly. The response time is a little slow after you click the button. Not that bad for me but maybe it's worse for some. In the button click sub I have the code to get the file and bring up the download window and I also have code to increment a table for download count and get the IP address of the person who clicked the button. If I just have the code necessary to do the download the download window comes up a little bit quicker. Here's my button click sub :
Code:
Protected Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
'
Dim FilePath As String = Server.MapPath("~/FolderForDownload/MyApplication.exe")
Dim myfile As New System.IO.FileInfo(FilePath)
If myfile.Exists Then
Response.AddHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=" + myfile.Name)
[Code] ...
What I've noticed is that when I had Responcse.End() before my code to get the IP address and increment my table and save the IP Address it would skip performing that code so I moved it below the code. It performs the code but I noticed that after you click the button it takes longer before you see the window pop up that asks if you want to Run or Save.
I tried putting the code to get the IP address and increment my table in a separate sub and then call the sub after Response.End() but it still doesn't perform that code unless I call that sub before Response.End().
I'd like to do everything I'm now doing but get the Do you want to Run or Save window to open sooner. I'm getting a number of people downloading my application from overseas and perhaps when it runs the code to identify the IP address it takes longer. I'm not sure but I see people clicking the download button repeatedly. My table records the exact time to the second when they clicked the download button and to take an example, there are 4 consecutive entries with the same IP address and the times are 3:28 PM for all 4 with the seconds being, 13, 15, 16, and 17.
I put a test download page on my website. When I was running in Visual Studio and using a localhost address I was seeing a big difference in how quickly the window opens after you click the download button if there's download code only versus download code with the other code. When I copied the page to my website and accessed the webpage on the internet there didn't seem to be hardly any difference.
Here's a link to the test page on my website if you want to try it out. You don't have to download anything but you can see how quickly the window opens asking if you want to run or save. There are 2 buttons on the page. One says Download Code Only and the other Download Code and Other Code.
[URL] ....
I just tried it out and I saw a big difference in time between the two but earlier I didn't. Sometimes I think the added code runs faster and other times slower.

have a website with MasterPages, on load master page has many database roundtrips and logics implemented. Now, if move to one page to another, the MasterPage get reloaded and all the above mentioned procedures processed again, which again takes a lot of time and as a result my website's response is very slow. For eaxmple, once the default page is loaded, all the child pages can load within the centent area (in ajax style).
tell me some workaround to optimize the site so that it doesn't this procedures repetitively.

I am using the AjaxControlToolkit 3.0.30930 (the most recent). I have a very simple page with an UpdatePanel. A button on the UpdatePanel invokes Response.Redirect and passes the URL of a Click Once application on the same server. This works well if I run the website on my local system (Windows 7, IIS 7.5).
If I run the website on a remote system (Windows Server 2008, IIS 7.5, same settings) the redirect simply does not work when invoking the page from remote (using the IP address). Instead a postback is executed. Even if I use the IP address of the webserver to invoke the website locally on the webserver, the redirect does not work. Using http://localhost on the webserver the redirect works well.
I tried another test page with no UpdatePanel: The redirect works well in all scenarios.
I tried out to invoke the ClickOnce application using a link instead of Response.Redirect: The redirect works well in all scenarios, even with an UpdatePanel.
<%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="TestWithUpdatePanel.aspx.cs" Inherits="TestWithUpdatePanel" %>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
[Code]....
Even if setting EnablePartialRendering to false, the redirect works. This is a big clue, that the UpdatePanel causes the problem.

If I have the following routes:
RouteTable.Routes.MapPageRoute("route1", "products/{cat1}/{cat2}.aspx", "categories.aspx");
RouteTable.Routes.MapPageRoute("route2", "products/{cat1}.aspx", "categories.aspx");
And am at this url:
products/door/steel.aspx
I would like to use Response.RedirectToRoute to redirect to "products/tools.aspx".
Response.RedirectToRoute(new { cat1 = "tools" }); redirects to "products/tools/steel.aspx"
Response.RedirectToRoute(new { cat1 = "tools", cat2 = "" }); redirects to "products/tools.aspx?cat2=steel"
Response.RedirectToRoute("route2", new { cat1 = "tools" }); redirects to "products/tools.aspx?cat2=steel"
Basically it seems the existing route values are being used in the redirect instead of what I specify. This behaviour can make sense, since it makes it easy to redirect to a url with only one route value different. But why when I specify it to be empty or specify what route to use does it add the existing value as a querystring argument, and is there a way around this?

I have the following function that works great. The screen Dims until the response is returned to the user. However, because the process could be quite long, I have been asked if I can place a progress bar in the middle of the screen whilst it's dimmed to give the user an idea of how long the process is going to take and so that they dont think the browser has hung.
Can anybody suggest a good Progress bar plug in with an idea of how to implement into my existing function. I'm using VS2010.

I have a strange situation on a production server. Connection for asp.net get queued but the CPU is only at 40%. Also the database runs fine at 30% CPU.
Some more history as requested in the comments:
In the peak hours the sites gets around 20,000 visitors an hour.
The site is an asp.net webforms application with a lot of AJAX/POSTs
The site uses a lot of User generated content
We measure the performance of the site with a testpage which does hit the database and the webservices used by the site. This page get served within a second on normal load. Whe define the application as slow when the request takes more than 4 seconds.
From the measurements we can see that the connectiontime is fast, but the processing time is large.
We can't pinpoint the slowresponse the a single request, the site runs fine during normal hours but gets slow during peak hours
We had a problem that the site was CPU bound (aka running at 100%), we fixed that
We also had problems with exceptions maken the appdomain restart, we fixed that do
During peak hours I take a look at the asp.net performance counters. We can see behaviour that we have 600 current connections with 500 queued connections.
At peak times the CPU is around 40% (which makes me the think that it is not CPU bound)
Physical memory is around 60% used
At peak times the DatabaseServer CPU is around 30% (which makes me think it is not Database bound)
My conclusion is that something else is stopping the server from handling the requests faster. Possible suspects:
Deadlocks (!syncblk only gives one lock)
Disk I/O (checked via sysinternals procesexplorer: 3.5 mB/s)
Garbage collection (10~15% during peaks)
Network I/O (connect time still low)
To find out what the proces is doing I created to minidumps.
I managed to create two MemoryDumps 20 seconds apart. This is the output of the first:
!threadpool
CPU utilization 6%
Worker Thread: Total: 95 Running: 72 Idle: 23 MaxLimit: 200 MinLimit: 100
Work Request in Queue: 1
Number of Timers: 64
and the output of the second:
!threadpool
CPU utilization 9%
Worker Thread: Total: 111 Running: 111 Idle: 0 MaxLimit: 200 MinLimit: 100
Work Request in Queue: 1589

I am developing sample web application which use C#, and LINQ to SQL. The application is very very slow and it takes about 2 secs to navigate between pages. I have already used SQL Profiler and monitor the calls to the SQL server. All SQLs looks normal to me and their execution time is always about 1 or 2 millisecs.I tried the same application in another PC and it is the same. So, it is not because of my computer performance.

My application runs quickly when debugging locally, but slows down to an almost unusable state once published. Oddly, the published version seems to be grabbing data very quickly from MSSQL - it's the part where I'm updating datatables and gridviews that is very slow. For example:

I know that when a .NET web application first starts, it will be slow on first access. For that reason, I created a 'keep alive' page in the application that is requested every 8 minutes or so by a scheduled process. I hoped that that would be sufficient to prevent the application from 'unloading' and thus suffer from this initial long startup time again and again.
I can see in my logs that the 'keep alive' page is indeed triggered every 8 minutes, 24 hours a day. But when I actively start working in the application after some time, eg. the following day, I still have to wait a while for it to start up. Once the first page is loaded, all is fine again.

There's a web app I've been assigned to, which is running very slow. It is a site that sells products so it is database driven, however even pages that do not query the database are loading very slow. The pages use master pages, and the code is in VB.NETI checked with fiddler and the time it takes to load basic (non database driven) pages are about 5.5 seconds on average.
What are some tools that can help me determine the cause of the slow speeds, and any recommendations as to how to speed it up, or potential issues that could cause it?UpdateSo I messed around with the code piece by piece as I wasn't getting anywhere with these tools. As soon as I remove master pages, and I include the same code that's on the master pages in the .aspx page itself, the speed improves drastically (approximately 5 times faster load times). What might cause the master pages to cause load times to slow down so much?

I have a simple web application that loads very slow the very first time after i deploy it. I am using ASP.NET 3.5 SP1 / VS 2008 / Linq / Web forms to load the default.aspx home page. It is a very light page with nothing too fancy. Now to debug this load issue, I logged all the events in the global file and got the following log text:
2010-04-10 11:58:38,083 - Application_Start
2010-04-10 11:58:38,111 - Application_BeginRequest
2010-04-10 11:58:38,117 - Application_AuthenticateRequest
2010-04-10 11:58:52,321 - Session_Start
2010-04-10 11:58:52,454 - Page_Load
2010-04-10 11:58:53,951 - End Page_load
2010-04-10 11:58:53,981 - Application_EndRequest
Now my question is, between the Application_AuthenticateRequest and Session_Start functions, there is generally around 10 - 15 seconds - which i believe seems to be the problem. The thing, I am unsure why this is slow between these two functions.I am not using any forms authentication. Also, I am not doing anything fancy in the global file besides setting a session variable.
