VS 2010 - Download Button Giving Slow Response

Oct 29, 2011

I have a download button on my website to download an application of mine. It works fine but I noticed people are clicking it repeatedly. The response time is a little slow after you click the button. Not that bad for me but maybe it's worse for some. In the button click sub I have the code to get the file and bring up the download window and I also have code to increment a table for download count and get the IP address of the person who clicked the button. If I just have the code necessary to do the download the download window comes up a little bit quicker. Here's my button click sub :

Code:
Protected Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
'
Dim FilePath As String = Server.MapPath("~/FolderForDownload/MyApplication.exe")
Dim myfile As New System.IO.FileInfo(FilePath)
If myfile.Exists Then
Response.AddHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=" + myfile.Name)

[Code] ...

What I've noticed is that when I had Responcse.End() before my code to get the IP address and increment my table and save the IP Address it would skip performing that code so I moved it below the code. It performs the code but I noticed that after you click the button it takes longer before you see the window pop up that asks if you want to Run or Save.

I tried putting the code to get the IP address and increment my table in a separate sub and then call the sub after Response.End() but it still doesn't perform that code unless I call that sub before Response.End().

I'd like to do everything I'm now doing but get the Do you want to Run or Save window to open sooner. I'm getting a number of people downloading my application from overseas and perhaps when it runs the code to identify the IP address it takes longer. I'm not sure but I see people clicking the download button repeatedly. My table records the exact time to the second when they clicked the download button and to take an example, there are 4 consecutive entries with the same IP address and the times are 3:28 PM for all 4 with the seconds being, 13, 15, 16, and 17.

I put a test download page on my website. When I was running in Visual Studio and using a localhost address I was seeing a big difference in how quickly the window opens after you click the download button if there's download code only versus download code with the other code. When I copied the page to my website and accessed the webpage on the internet there didn't seem to be hardly any difference.

Here's a link to the test page on my website if you want to try it out. You don't have to download anything but you can see how quickly the window opens asking if you want to run or save. There are 2 buttons on the page. One says Download Code Only and the other Download Code and Other Code.

[URL] ....

I just tried it out and I saw a big difference in time between the two but earlier I didn't. Sometimes I think the added code runs faster and other times slower.

Configuration :: Local IIS 7, Slow Download?

Sep 25, 2010

I've made a small web site (MVC2, VS 2010) with some image gallery functionality. When testing locally the images download very very slowly, as if I had dial up internet connection. For example if I try
http://my_local_website/myimage.jpg it will be slow. However, if I try (via web browser) C:mywebsite_foldermyimage.jpg it will load instantly.Not sure if this is an issue of my local IIS7 or what, but I would like to fix it before going live.

Slow Response When Hiding / Showing Panels

Mar 9, 2010

I have a drop down list that hides a panel with a bunch of controls when a certain value is selected, and shows the panel again when some other value is selected. This works fine. However it's slow when running both on my local webserver and on my web host, and takes about 1-2 seconds. What could be the reason for this? The only thing I do is to check which value is selected and hides/shows the panel.

AJAX :: Implement Within An Existing Application / Slow Response?

Jan 31, 2011

I'm trying to implement AJAX within an existing application and it seems to be running slow.

I have 3 datallist that all have checkboxs. I have buttons that all users to check all checkbox for a specific datalist. I have an update panel around each datalist. When I check and uncheck it seems to be really slow. I also have 3 textboxes and 4
buttons within my update panel.

When I user uses this site it hides and shows different panels and that seems to be really slow when the users press a button. There is no database stuff happening when the slowness occurs.

Download Of Large Files Slow When Content-length Specified (IIS7)?

Feb 4, 2010

I have an asp.net web page to serve large file downloads to users.

The page is hosted on IIS7, Windows Server 2008.

The strange thing is that users can download at good speeds (2MB/s) when I don't add a content-length response header but as soon as I add this header, download speed drops to somewhere around 35kbps/s.

This is the code:

[code]...

Of course I can leave the content-length out but the user will not know how big the file is and how long the download will take...which is annoying.

Visual Studio 2010 Slow Debugging?

Feb 15, 2011

I have a problem with Visual Studio 2010. When I start debugging it works slowly.

Internet Explorer opens, but the website loads extremely slowly.

My workmate and me work on the same project and he doesn't have any problem like that.

My hardware is 4G memory + Intel Core i5 CPU 3.20 GHz.

I stopped my anti-virus program but it couldn't be resolved.

VS 2010 - Debugging Starts Slow On Localhost

Sep 21, 2012

All of a sudden my debugging is taking forever to start on localhost (several minutes). It also takes a long time to return to the vwd after I stop debugging.

I haven't done anything that I can think of that would change anything (it has worked in the past, although the slow stop may have been there for some time.

The only thing I did was to add another user to the membership db.

I think it's a problem with starting the localhost development server.

Visual Studio 2010 Remote Debugging Is Very Slow?

May 5, 2010

Overall debugging works, but each step through code takes dosens of seconds.

I've already closed all additional windows like stack trace,watches,autos; deleted all breakpoints.

server and dev machine are located in different domains, so i set up local user on both, with matching password. remote debugger is running as service.

looking at security log, I found quite a lot of entries about remote debugging account logging in (record about every minute).

how i can speed up remote debugging?

dev computer: quad core, 8 Gb mem, win 7 x64 , visual studio 2010 ultimate target server: asp.net website , 2xdual core xeon, 2Gb mem, remote debugger 2010communication channel: vpn , 5 mbit , latency about 20ms. (seems that debbugging never uses more than 20 kb/s)

C# - Response.Redirect Causes Download Of The Swf?

Feb 20, 2010

I have a flash image slider with a button below each image. When i press that button, the user is redirected to a new page where i add that image product to my cart. The problem is that after doing the adding, i want to redirect the user back to the initial page.

The code:

protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
addProductToBasket(getCategoryIdFromUrl(), getProductIdFromUrl());
Response.Redirect(Request.UrlReferrer.ToString());
}

note that in Firefox is working fine but in IE or Chrome it is DOWNLOADING the swf...If i comment Response.Redict(...) the user remains on this page so the click button is working well, only the redirect seems to be the problem.

Edit: The problem seems to be that Request.UrlReferrer keeps as link not the initial page containing the swf but the swf itself.

So, instead of doing redirect to:[URL] if does redirect to the swf contained on the Index.aspx page[URL]

Solved: with a session variable where i keep the initial page's url

C# - MP3 Download In An HTTP Response?

Jun 9, 2010

I've a question about something I'm searching for,for too long! We've build an application from which an admin upload songs into a database. Then user can bought songs and download it individualy. The problem is that when user download MP3 songs with the code below, it works great in Firefox and Chrome but not in IE8 simply because WMP trying to open the songs and it just don't get it instead of having a "Save as" dialog? Any issue on HOW can i force to have the "Save As" diaglog? Note that I have not MP3 physicaly on server it's in database. So I can't direct link to song ...

Here's my code :

// Remove "specials chars"
foreach (char aChar in @"/:*?""<>| ") {
if (aChar == ' ') {
songNameAndExt = songNameAndExt.Replace(' ', '_');
} else {
songNameAndExt = songNameAndExt.Replace(aChar.ToString(), string.Empty);
}
}
Response.Clear();
Response.ClearHeaders();
Response.ClearContent();
HttpContext.Current.Response.ContentType = "application/octet-stream";
HttpContext.Current.Response.Headers.Add("Content-Disposition", string.Format("filename={0}", songNameAndExt));
HttpContext.Current.Response.OutputStream.Write(songData, 0, songLength);

C# - Response.TransmitFile Failing On First Download?

Oct 19, 2010

I have some code on an aspx page then when users loads the page it starts downloading a zip. Looks like this:

Response.ContentType = "application/octet-stream";
Response.AppendHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=" + fileSaveName);
Response.TransmitFile(zipPath);
Response.End();

The problem is the FIRST time this is hit I get the following error:

The zip file exists and is not in my wwwroot. If I refresh the page the file will download fine.

If I wrap the code in a Try Catch I get a System.Threading.Threadabort exception with the message:

Unable to evaluate expression because the code is optimized or a native frame is on top of the call stack.

NOTE: I actually get that exception every time. I guess its just to do with the Response.End

Response - Finding Memory Usage During Download?

Jan 22, 2010

On an ASP.net site at my place of work, the following chunk of code is responsible for handling file downloads (NOTE: Response.TransmitFile is not used here because the contents of the download are being streamed from a zip file):

[code]....

I've just read about the 'buffer' property of the Response object. If I set that to false, will that prevent the Response.BinaryWrite() calls from buffering the data in memory? In general, what is a good way to limit memory usage in this situation? Perhaps I should stream from the zip to a temporary file, then call Response.TransmitFile()?

EDIT: In addition to possible solutions, I'm very interested in explanations of the memory usage issue present in the code above. Why would this consume far more than 1MB, even though Response.Flush is called on every loop iteration? Is it just the unnecessary heap allocation that occurs on every loop iteration (and doesn't get GC'd right away), or is there something else at work?

C# - Download .xlsx File Using Response.TransmitFile()?

Feb 16, 2010

I'm working on some code that generates an Excel spreadsheet server-side and then downloads it to the user. I'm using ExcelPackage to generate the file.

The generation is working just fine. I can open the generated files using Excel 2007 with no issues. But, I'm having trouble downloading the file with Response.TransmitFile().

Right now, I have the following code:

//Generate the file using ExcelPackage
string fileName = generateExcelFile(dataList, "MyReportData");
Response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment;filename=FileName.xls");
Response.ContentType = "application/vnd.xls"
Response.Charset = "";
Response.TransmitFile(fileName);

When Excel 2007 opens the file downloaded as above, it gives the "file format doesn't match extension" warning. After clicking past the warning, Excel displays the raw xml contents of the file. If I change the file extension, like so Response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment;filename=FileName.xlsx");
Excel 2007 gives an "Excel found unreadable content in the file" error, followed by a dialog that offers to locate a converter on the web. If I click "no" on this dialog, Excel is able to load the data.

I've also experimented with different MIME types, like application/vnd.ms-excel and application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.spreadsheetml.sheet, combined with file extensions of .xls and .xlsx. All combinations result in one of the two behaviors mentioned above. What is the correct combination of file extension and MIME type to use in this scenario? What else could cause this failure, other than an improper MIME type or extension? FYI, this is occurring with Visual Studio's built-in development web server. I haven't yet tried this with IIS.

Web Forms :: File Download Using Response.BinaryWrite() - Odd Behavior

Jan 8, 2010

I am using a gridview to display (open or save) files that have been uploaded into a SQL 2005 server. I have a templatefield within the gridview that contains a linkbutton that does a postback to GetUploadedFile.aspx that then fires the response.binarywrite() code. The code seems to work fine and opens/saves the files correctly. But once this has completed and I try and click on another button on the page, instead of doing the appropriate action it re-fires the getuploadedfile.aspx binarywrite code and opens up the "Open/Save/Cancel" dialog again.

Architecture :: Write A Response To Let Users Download A Big File From DB?

Mar 11, 2010

I am a newbie of handling memory.

in my web apps, files are stored as varbinary in sql server.

my goal is to make a response to let users to download the files.

if there is a file (500 MB) stored in one record in the sql server,

what is the best way to let users download it?

I found that , in code-behind, if the files are loaded as byte[] objects, it uses the memory.

for example, the datalength of a file in the database is 500 MB.

the byte[] for this file uses 500 MB memory. am I correct?

how about the filestream? if the file is loaded as a filestream object in code-behind.s

does it also take 500 MB memory?

Web Forms :: Client Download .csv File From Server Using Response.TransmitFile?

Sep 3, 2010

I am using the code below to enable clients to download a .csv file from my server.

The problem I am having is that when the file is saved to the client computer the file name is prefixed and suffixed with an underscore which leads to a file type of .csv_ which is obviously not a recognised file type.

How can I strip the underscores from the file name at the transmit stage?

Dim FileName As String = LstBox1.SelectedItem.ToString
Dim FilePath As String = "~/temp" & FileName
Response.Clear()
Response.ContentType = "text/csv"
Response.AddHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=" & FileName & "")
Response.TransmitFile(FilePath)
Response.End()
