All Controls Are Still Null After Calling EnsureChildControls()?

Jul 23, 2010

The way this page is laid out, all of the data is loaded at Page_Init. Well, I have a custom control that is having problems with this though.

I have it on the page like so:

<cc:SomeControl... />

And then I set the value at Page_Init using

MyControl.Value="blah";

Simple stuff..

The Value is an accessor and has something similar to this:

public string Value{
get...
set{
EnsureChildControls();
MyHiddenField.Value=value;
}
}

and it is here that I have a problem. It says that MyHiddenField is null. Is Page_Init just too early for this? Or is there some other function I need to call?

The Proper Use Of EnsureChildControls()?

Sep 21, 2010

Most often I use it when I am accessing a property of a composite control that depends on a child control.But I have also added it to OnInit of a control so I could make sure a hidden field was added correctly. Just a minute ago I called it in RenderControl because I was having an issue rendering a calendar extender and it fixed it. I am starting to get a little confused on when I need to and when I don't need to call EnsureChildControls and when I should call it.

MVC :: Exception Calling UpdateModel - Value Cannot Be Null Or Empty

Apr 8, 2010

This is probably something silly I'm missing but I'm definitely lost. I'm using .NET 4 RC and VS 2010. This is also my first attempt to use UpdateModel in .NET 4, but every time I call it, I get an exception saying Value cannont be null or empty. I've got a simple ViewModel called LogOnModel:

[Code]....

My view uses the new strongly typed helpers in MVC2 to generate a textbox for username and one for the password. When I look at FormCollection in my controller method, I see values for both coming through.

And last but not least, here's are post controller methods:

[Code]....

why UpdateModel would be throwing this exception?

IEnumerable Not Null But Calling Count() Results In Exception?

Jun 2, 2010

I have code that's working beautifully on my development machine,but when deployed to the server is throwing null reference exception.So,I can't step through the code,but I've pinned down the culprit.But now I am puzzled.Here's the code.The question is below.

Dim certs = From p In persons _
Select New Certificate( _
p.Value, _
New CertificateData.Seminar(thisEvent.Seminar.Name, _

[code]...

In the code above persons is a dictionary of custom class,and certs is of IEnumerable type.Now here's the quandary.The first line that sets the label returns False,so certs is not null.But the second line throws an null reference exception.

C# - Calling Membership Validateuser Method From Another Project In Same Solution Throw Null?

Oct 25, 2010

I have a webservice project and a web project in the same solution.

The web project implements a membershipprovider.

I want to be able to authenticate user via the webservice project but when i call this method in the webproject:
public static bool AuthUser(string userName, string password)
{
return Membership.ValidateUser(userName, password);
}

I get this inner ex."Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed." Calling the method from the webproject works fine. I understand why I get the ex. but not how to solve it.. UPDATE Well I fixed the issue by deleting the C:UsersJRBAppDataLocalMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Server DataSQLEXPRESS folder.. However now the method always returns false.. It almost seems like it doesn't use the proper connectionstring.

Forms Data Controls :: Displaying A Null Or Empty Cell For A Null Datetime Database Value In Gridview?

Dec 6, 2010

I have setup my business object to have a create_date and edit_date members both datetime datatypes. My company want to display the create_date and edit_date fields in a gridview for each transaction. The problem i have is that after insterting a record it will have a valid create_date but no edit_date and when displayed in the gridview it defaults to datetime.minvalue (My default). How on earth do i show an empty field in my gridview for a null datetime field in the database?

I am using similar architecture to the Imar Spaanjaars example of a tiered solution. With a few small tweeks it has worked well for me for ages. I am passing a List<Database> to my object datasource which connects to my gridview.

SQL Server :: Inserting Null Value Into Foreign Key Table With Allow Null Enabled?

Oct 2, 2010

I have 2 table Table A, Table B.

Table A - Parent Table

ID - Uniqueidentifier not null(PK)

Table B -Child Table

ID - uniqueidentifier null(FK, TableA)

I have a stored procedure to insert data into Table B, but when I tried to insert a null value into column ID of table B, this error came up:

The INSERT statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint "FK_tableB_tableA". The conflict occurred in database "database name", table "table A", column 'ID'.

The statement has been terminated.

The insert statement in asp.net is like so:

sqlcommand.parameter.add(New Sqlparameter("ID", Nothing))

I am guessing adding nothing to the null value column is the problem, but i don't know how to fix it... The INSERT statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint "FK_tableB_tableA". The conflict occurred in database "database name", table "table A", column 'ID'.

Web Forms :: Session Variable Is Null When It Shouldn´t Be Null?

Mar 18, 2010

I have a problem with a SessionVariable. I will explain what is happening:

1. From the default.aspx I send Session["LoginByAdmin"] = "Dummy"; and then redirect to this page where I have the code below. So the Page_Load sees that this Session["LoginByAdmin"] != null and enter this page. This works fine !

2. In the Page_Load, I later fill a ListBox1 with foldernames.

3. With Button1_Click1, I will now delete the choosen Folder in the ListBox1 wich works fine the first time and the ListBox updates the new existing folders in the ListBox. (I have wrapped this inside an updatepanel)

The problems comes now when I try to delete a choosen folder in the ListBox1 the second time in a row. When I select a Folder in the ListBox1 and now Press Button1, I will be redirected to "Default.aspx". This meens that this code is running: (That meens that Session["LoginByAdmin"] == null and I have not set this to null anywhere. This is my big question how this variable can be = null here?

if (Session["LoginByAdmin"] == null)
Response.Redirect("Default.aspx");
break;

Two Controls Calling Same Method?

Mar 17, 2010

I have 2 text boxes inside my aspx page and I want to call the same method func(object sender, EvenArgs ev) on ontextchanged events of these textboxes.I want to parse the text of these textboxes inside this function - now the question is how would func(object sender, EvenArgs ev) know which of the textbox's has called it? I need to know that so that I could then use text property of that textbox to parse it and further process it.Isn't there a thing like sender.equals(textbox1).Or probably is there a way I could pass the text as a string argument to func()? If yes, how and whats the format?I dont want to make two functions separately for ontextchanged events of these textboxes, when the fucntionality of this method remains exactly the same.

DataSource Controls :: Gridview Populated By ObjectDatasource Which Is Calling A DAL/BLL?

Jun 7, 2010

I have a gridview being populated by an ObjectDataSource (ODS). The ODS is calling a BLL to get information from a database table. The information returned is all determined by a participantID. This works fine normally.

The issue is that I'm getting an exception thrown when the participantID isn't listed in the database table; which is possible until their information is inserted and updated on this database table. The information is entered when someone visits a webpage, their information and date/time stamp is inserted/updated to this table, but not until then.

Do I edit my ODS or the BLL to check for a null return and handle this exception? How would I do this as well?
