WCF / ASMX :: Building Services To Work With Web Applications And Console Applications?

Jun 7, 2010

I've been worked with web services so far, and I'm interested in expanding my services to console applications as well so I started digging up with WCF but I'm conserned that I won't be able to use the HttpContext collection that I've been used to do with web services one important thing which is to generate a random value from HttpContext.Current.Request.ServerVariables["ALL_HTTP"] that I need to reckon if it's the same or at least near what machine that is calling my service. How can I overcome this problem?

I need to know what machine is calling to count the number of attempts to login into my system for example. So must do it inside of the svc code otherwise if I let the client inform what ip address or what computer he is using, anyone could forge this argument and surpass by another machine. May be I'm approaching this matter wrongly. And I should count the number of attempts per state session, but how is it done?

C# - What Pattern Is Layered Architecture In .net ?

Jun 9, 2010

I am a asp.net developer and don't know much about patterns and architecture.In my web applications I use 4 layers.Web site project (having web forms + code behind cs files, user controls + code behind cs files, master pages + code behind cs files)

CustomTypesLayer a class library (having custom types, enumerations, DTOs, constructers, get, set and validations)

BusinessLogicLayer a class library (having all business logic, rules and all calls to DAL functions)

DataAccessLayer a class library( having just classes communicating to database.)

-My user interface just calls BusinessLogicLayer. BusinessLogicLayer do proecessign in it self and for data it calls DataAccessLayer funtions.

-Web forms do not calls directly DAL.

-CustomTypesLayer is shared by all layers.

I though it may be MVC or MVP but pages have there code behind files as well which are confusing me.

Data Binding In 3 Layered Architecture?

Feb 16, 2010

Does data binding fit in a 3 layered architecture? Is dropping a grid-view on a web form and binding it to a LinkDataSource or SQLDataSource considered bad? The way I see it, that's the Presentation Layer talking to the Data Access Layer. I once heard a "professional developer" say never ever do this, so what's the alternative if you shouldn't?

Architecture :: The Respository Pattern In A Layered Web Environment?

Oct 27, 2010

I have been looking at the Repository Pattern. While trolling around the net I have come across many implementations and examples. Many of these examples have code like:

ObjectDataSource1.Datasource = CustomerRepository.GetAll();.

Since the Repository basically serves as the Data Access Layer, doesn't this violate the principles of a layered approach by having a UI component accessing the data access layer? If so, my assumption is that I would need to wrap the call CustomerRepository.GetAll() in some business object like:

ObjectDataSource1.Datasource = CustomerManager.GetAll();
where CustomerManager calls CustomerRepository.GetAll();.

If this is correct, what benefit am I getting by wrapping a business class around the Repository? It seems like I am adding an extra layer for the sole purpose of avoiding calling the DataAccessLayer/Repository directly from the UI?

Is it okay for the UI to have access to my Data Access layer in order to read data from the database?

In App_Data folder of web site? Then how DAL will know path where to find files to parse?

What Is The Best Architecture For Building A Website That May Also Support A Native Mobile App In The Future

Sep 30, 2010

I am in the planning phases of building a new ASP.NET website. The website is really a transactional web application where the users will log in and perform basic CRUD data operations. For right now this website will be accessible through a traditional desktop browser and a mobile browser. For the mobile browser we will build a separate scaled down version of the site.In the future we may decide to create native mobile applications for Android or iOS devices also.

So the question I have is what is the best way to design the system to easily support that? Here is what I am thinking. I am thinking of building out 3 tiers to the site. The back end will be the database - SQL Server 2008. We will use stored procedures for all data access. The middle tier will be a web services tier. This tier will be built using RESTful web services and will contain all of the business logic. These web services will provide access to the database. The front end will be built using ASP.NET. The front end will only contain presentation logic. These tiers will actually be deployed on physically separate servers.

Then I am thinking that when we decide to build a native Android or iOS app that we could build those apps to simply call the same RESTful web services that the main site is calling.Does this seem like a reasonable approach? The only thing I can think of is that the way we are building it right now the web services would be behind the firewall and would not be accessible to the outside world. When we want to support a native mobile app then we would need to make the web services accessible to the outside world.Any thoughts? Does this seem like a good approach for building a high availability, high usage web app that needs to support native mobile apps in the future?

Architecture :: Two Different Base Classes Sharing Some Of The Same Code?

Mar 21, 2011

I got loads of website, that share one of two baseclasses. I need the two baseclasses to be able to share part of the same code. I dont want to have to duplicate the shared code per baseclass.

so.. I got a page.aspx that inherits the baseclass and that inhertis 'sub' baseclass that inherits the web.ui.page class. So far so good :-)

In my baseclass I got a Public (at the top of the class not in any method- not sure of the proper term) Varable that is constructed from a structure in the BO class.

it Public PageDetails AS CoreDomainSetupBO.GetStartUpDetails = {database method}

I need the pagedetails to be available in the sub baseclass but it cant be defined there as the page details value is defined differently in the different base classes.

I hope that makes sense, I need to sub base class to be able to use a property that is defined at baseclass level.

Architecture :: Sharing Classes In Between Two Associated Projects In One Solution?

Dec 3, 2010

I am looking for general direction on the best practice here. I have a class that I want to share between two different forms in two projects that are associated. The two forms are in seperate projects but both projects load together as I have added the second project to the first. I also have a class that I want to share between these two projects which will cause me to add another project to this solution with will mean I will have three projects in my solution. My question is how do I best share this class?

I believe the only way to do this is to add the class in the reference in both of the form projects?... Is this correct ? I'd really like to just reference the class and inherit it in the source code without adding it as a reference but I am feeling that I can't do that. I am obviously pressed for time and working on other projects and a I am a experienced coder with only about 1 year of C# experience...

Architecture :: Finding Best Practice For Designing Classes - OOP

Aug 10, 2010

I am searching for what are the standard best practice (for OOP) used to design classes for develop asp.net application? I am aware of most of the OOP concepts but confused with how to map object/classes.

Let's take example of Adventure works - 2005 database provided by Microsoft; it has five schemas Sales, Purchase, Person, Production, HR and DBO.

Should we consider Schemas as Namespace in Classes?

Now, Person schema has 5 tables, should we design classes based on tables?

i.e. Person schema has Address, AddressType, Contact, ContactType, CountryRegion & StateProvince tables. What are the classes we can consider?

What are the basic criteria to decide objects? What to do and how to design classes for tables like Purchase order detail, Product cost history, Product inventory, Product Category etc.

Architecture :: Using DataSets Alongside Linq To SQL Classes?

Feb 22, 2010

I am updating a project I wrote some time ago. At the time my preference was for DataSets and DataSetTableAdapters, but I've now moved on to use Linq to SQL DataClasses. I would like to convert the project to Linq to SQL, but I am tight on time and it's a big job. My question is, is there any reasons I can't develop new modules using Linq to SQL DataClasses along side DataSets and convert the DataSets overtime?

Apart from the obvious confusion it will cause, are there any technical problems I should be aware of i.e. will there be any performance problems using the two methods?

In the code I have that works with that new class, I want to display the EquipmentDescription - but that property only exists on the Equipment class.
