I have a third party dll and i need to add some more functionalities (methods, constants etc..) so create a wrapper class. I have no idea about wrapper classes. what is the purpose of this and how to create in .NET for this 3rd party dll.

View 1 RepliesI'm currently facing a performance problem with creating POCO objects from my database. I'm using Entity Framework 4 as OR-Mapper. The whole application is a prototype for now. Let's assume I want to have some business objects like classes 'Printer' or 'Scanner'. Both classes inherit from a BaseClass called Product.
The business classes exist.
I try to use a more generic database approach. I don't want to create tables for "Printer" nor "Scanner". I want to have 3 tables: One called Product, and the other Property and PropertyValue (which stores all assigned values to a specific Product). In my business layer I do create a specific object like this:

This is how the EF model looks like: Works fine so far. For now I'm doing performance tests for retrieving multiple sets. I've created a prototype and improved it several times to increase the performance. It is still far away from being usable. I takes 919ms to create 300 objects who only contain 3 properties. The reason for choosing such DB design is to have a generic database design. Adding new properties should only be done in the business model.
Am I just being too stupid to create a performant way of retrieving xx objects or is my approach totally wrong? As far as I understand OR-Mapper, they are basically doing the same?
I'm implementing n-tier structure in the current app I'm working on. Because DataBinding a list of my Objects to a Repeater was far too slow I need to databind a DataTable to the Repeater. Should I still DataBind to a Function (that returns a DataTable) in the BLL that calls a Function in the DAL that returns a DataTable?

View 1 RepliesI got loads of website, that share one of two baseclasses. I need the two baseclasses to be able to share part of the same code. I dont want to have to duplicate the shared code per baseclass.
so.. I got a page.aspx that inherits the baseclass and that inhertis 'sub' baseclass that inherits the web.ui.page class. So far so good :-)
In my baseclass I got a Public (at the top of the class not in any method- not sure of the proper term) Varable that is constructed from a structure in the BO class.

I need the pagedetails to be available in the sub baseclass but it cant be defined there as the page details value is defined differently in the different base classes.
I hope that makes sense, I need to sub base class to be able to use a property that is defined at baseclass level.
I am looking for general direction on the best practice here. I have a class that I want to share between two different forms in two projects that are associated. The two forms are in seperate projects but both projects load together as I have added the second project to the first. I also have a class that I want to share between these two projects which will cause me to add another project to this solution with will mean I will have three projects in my solution. My question is how do I best share this class?
I believe the only way to do this is to add the class in the reference in both of the form projects?... Is this correct ? I'd really like to just reference the class and inherit it in the source code without adding it as a reference but I am feeling that I can't do that. I am obviously pressed for time and working on other projects and a I am a experienced coder with only about 1 year of C# experience...

I am updating a project I wrote some time ago. At the time my preference was for DataSets and DataSetTableAdapters, but I've now moved on to use Linq to SQL DataClasses. I would like to convert the project to Linq to SQL, but I am tight on time and it's a big job. My question is, is there any reasons I can't develop new modules using Linq to SQL DataClasses along side DataSets and convert the DataSets overtime?
Apart from the obvious confusion it will cause, are there any technical problems I should be aware of i.e. will there be any performance problems using the two methods?

Or should you only use the external class to process some data, return that data back to the main class (that instantiated that external class object) and then have an internal function in the main class to deliver the data to the control? (back to the screen)

Now, I have a view in the database called "EquipmentWithCableDetails", which contains additional useful information with the equipment details - so I create a class to model that view (in order to be able to read from it). In the code I have that works with that new class, I want to display the EquipmentDescription - but that property only exists on the Equipment class.
I am using the ADO.NET Entity Framework for loading data from the database. The classes are directly mapped to database tables in the database. The problem is that these classes are not optimal for binding to the UI elements. As a result of this I have some custom entities which are populated at the service layer and returned. It is these custom entities (classes) to which I bind the UI elements. My questions on this are1. Is populating these entities at the service layer the most appropriate way to do this. I personally do not think so because if we introduce some additional UI elements which need different entities then I have to modify the service layer again.2. What is the best approach/pattern to get this done.
View 2 RepliesSo I started working on my first asp.net application that involves logging in and databases, and soon after i started messing around with a static class. I "discovered" that if you make a variable static, all sessions share that variable (I for some reason was originally assuming that each session had its own copy of that "static" class). Anyway, after discovering this I thought to myself "how could this possibly be useful to me" and thought that itmight be a good idea to make a single static database connection for all of the sessions, rather than storing that as a session variable for each session. Does anybody know what would be the pros and cons of this approach?

We have WCF service that we have to expose to third party so then can request with xml and get back xml response.
The wcf service should do the following:
- Accept the request call with xml
- Check xml against the schema
- Parse the xml
- Authenticate the incoming xml by username and password that will be in xml
- Send back the response
If anybody can let me know what kind of design I can use or is there any pattern available that I can take it and then extend it as per my requirement.
I was tasked to create 3 tier web application. However, i browsed through many books & tutorials. The examples are doing it using Object data source which my lecturers claimed that it is not 3 tier at all. Shouldn't be dragging any data source into deisgn view. I already have a desktop, C# WPF, application that has some of the classes I am going to require in the MVC architecture of this new website. Can anyone advise me of the best practise to reuse these classes in the website. If I was going to create a new app I would refactor the classes out of the desktop app into a class library then add this to my new app by adding an existing project (my class library) to my solution but that option does not seem to exist in creating a website?

I also have a Customer class in my C# solution but how do I introduce the multiple address element? Do I have a separate Address class? Do I create a subclass in the Customer class or create a method in Customer called GetAddresses of type List which contains all of the relevant logic? In my code I need to be able to return a customer with all associated addresses and I just cannot picture the best way to achieve this using OOP.

I am used to making separate Business Object and List<> classes for my DB tables. Sometimes I just have a basic task in hand as displaying a list of year for a search box or having some values in a drop down.
Right now I am ending up with a lot of separate classes and List classes<> for these basic operations.
How can I make a single class for some basic tasks as these by using generics? I want to have single class for some methods like get current year, employee names, Department Name/Code, Title etc. I am using .NET 2.0.

After some searching, I found that I can achieve similar tasks by creating a DTO namespace.
What I don't get right now is how to create multiple classes inside my DTO class. Say 1 class for just returning 'year', One for 'Employee Name/Code' and so on inside the single DTO class.
Whenever I create a new folder in my website (VS008) and add an item (Class) it can't be seen by the other pages, even though new class is public. Only if I add the class to the app_code folder or create a bin folder for it then it could be shared from these folders however I want to create my own custom named folders for organization and keep my classes there.
