report requirement
1.length of video
2. total time that spend to load this video (dynamic is better)
3. average download and upload speed during playing the video

I want to create a Online Exam site in ASP.NET .In that i want to display Test based on the Date and time and the user can take the test at the time set my the Teacher.
For Example:
Teacher want to take C Test for the Mid Semester Test and the test is schedule on 1 May 2010,then the test should appear on the test page on the 1st may only and the user should be able to take the test on the set time.
The problem is that if i use System time then user can change the system time and can take the test schedule in future.
So i want to know how can implement this thing.I have given many online test but dont know how they work out the time and date logic.

There are various website speed test online tools available. Few of them are listed on: [URL] I tested my website using iweb and selfseo. My website is showing 0.03KB Average speed per KB everywhere. Even google also is giving same kind of results.I tested the site using Page Speed and YSlow. I have already followed most of the recommendations suggested by these tools like efficient use CSS, contents across the domains, caching, compression and all. But still I am getting the same average speed per kb. Page speed is showing around 85/100 as my page speed score, so I guess I have optimized my site a lot. My questions here are:
1. What are the other factors affecting the avg speed per kb of a website?
2. How to improve the Avg speed per kb?
3. Is there anything related with the Server Software and Hardware that I have to check?
Note: I tested by uploading a plain html page with simple text "Hello World", but the avg speed per kb is the same for this page as well. Same is the case with the rest of the pages.
Application Platform : ASP.Net 3.5, C#3.0, LINQ as Data Access, SQL Server 2008
Server Platform : Windows Server 2003.

I am trying to develop a chess application in asp.net (C#). I am very confused about overall structure of the application. I am just unable to figure out the complete model (or prototype) of my project. As chess programming should be very efficient in memory consumption and speed, can someone provide me a good idea , how should I develop my application. Currently, I am taking a class named 'Chessboard' for my project and its objects are chesspieces ( pawn,king,queeen). I am initialising each object with some properties (type, value, color etc). But its quite complex. I am having 32 objects in this approach.

I was searching server software to build a Multiplayer Online Game. All of the servers I found up to now use Java in the server side (ie smartfoxserver)
Today I found this one, Photon, that seems interesting because it uses .NET, you can see it here:

I thought you might want to know this, the beta of IIS Express will be released soon, and will make use of the best of both worlds: VS build in web server and IIS in Windows itself. Anyways, IIS Express makes it even easier to build, run and test web applications.

I want to make sure my theory of an upcoming project will work. Online ordering form for a restuarant. Order will be for pickup or delivery. no payment online. so gather order information and call web service which lives on a computer at the restaurant, this web service will log the order information into a file then send the order information to a ticket printer in the kitchen.

This question is for ASP.NET and SQL Server developers. What are your best practices with respect to setting up your development and test environment? I'm interesting in the following issues:
1. How many tiers do you recommend and what goes on on each tier? Just dev, test, and production or perhaps dev, test, staging, and production?
2. Which types of applications and/or servers should run on actual physical hardware and which can get away with a VM?
3. What are your strategies for loosely coupling users from web sites, web developers from their web/app/DB servers, and DB developers from their DB servers?
4. How do developers stay "DRY?"
5. What are the pros and cons to putting web, app, and DB servers on their own machines? Does putting servers on separate machines in order to minimize contention for a machine's resources trump any NIC and network latencies that might be introduced by putting them on different machines?
6. How do you configure your web apps to minimize contention for resources (e.g. virtual directories, separate application pools, etc.)
7. How and how often do you refresh your databases on each tier? Do you just refresh the data or both the data and objects?

When I'm building my web project it takes about 20 seconds to compile. Then when I try to browse to a web page in project, asp.net does its runtime compilation(another 20 seconds). I know I can't escape these steps because thats how asp.net works, just want to see if anyone has some kind of optimization to make these builds faster.
Trying to improve Edit-Compile-Test loop
My machine details:
-Intel Core i7 processor @2.80GHz
-8GB of RAM
-HD @ 7200 RPM

im trying to build my first multi-tenant application, i used a shared database and it is complete now, i want to build the app now, and i tried this approach: all urls in the app have the following form ~/user/page.aspx(user directory is logical) where user is the current user, which is saved in a session after he logs in. when the user requests a page, say ~/user/profile.aspx, he is routed to the real page ~/profile.aspx and then his data are retrieved from the database. i dont think this is how multi tenant applications work, but i couldnt think of another method.

I'm a student doing final year of my Computer Science and Engineering. For my final year project i've choosen to do an online word processor such as google docs,zoho etc.I want to implement this project in .net. This will be a ajax oriented project and i'm well prepared with the web related part of it with ASP.net and C#.net at the server end and HTML,Javascript at the front end. But the point where i'm struck up is:
-> How can i create, edit and add MS Word features to a .doc file using VB.net or C#.net??
-> .net Library classes that will be helpful for me to create word related components as .doc files i.e how to create word using .net?
-> How can i convert a .doc file to HTML file to display it on a web browser?
-> In brief tell me how to create a word processor so that i'll be able to create it online.

This is not a programming question per se, but rather an attempt to find the adequate technology to use for my objective. My mandate is to build an ASP.NET Web Application. However, on certain pages, some client-side information needs to be fetched by interacting with hardware on the client's computer, for example a barcode reader or an RFID tag reader. My first reflex was to think "ActiveX" controls with, perhaps, some AJAX coding to fetch the required values from said control. However, I am not sure if I am up to date with the latest tech trends. The solution I'm looking for will let me design a user control that plugs into my ASP.NET Web Application, lets me interact with client-side hardware, and can be automatically downloaded from the Web Application itself (I can't predict which computers will access my Web Application). Which technology(ies) should I go for?

hey folks I got a general question that maybe some of you can just weigh in. I developed an online store for a client and people place orders online for a food ordering place however I am trying to find the best way to have the orders show up for them at the store. Currently I am sending an email and an autoprint software prints it out which works most of the time but not good enough sometimes it doesn't print. Anyone had similar issues or have other alternative solutions you may have heard off? Like I said the site sends an email to the customer and the store's email account.

i see that my site is a little slow in my localhost it is fast but in the server not but i see that videos are displayed without problems so i dont think that is from bandwith but i am not sure which are the main things that make a page go slow? sessions can be one of that?? or connections with database??or something else?

I have a page that has 5 sections. Each section takes about 1 second to render.
Page_Load()
{
RenderSection1(); //1 sec
RenderSection2(); //1 sec
RenderSection3(); //1 sec
RenderSection4(); //1 sec
RenderSection5(); //1 sec
}
I would like to speed up the loading of this page. But at the same time make sure that it don't slow down performance of other parts of web application and also do not crash the IIS.
The are several approaches:
Use AJAX requests. Needs to be MVC style requests to Controller or Web Service. Using UpdatePanel around each section will not work - since if I try to submit refreshes to multiple UpdatePanels at the same time using approach here: [URL], the last request will always win: [URL] Use ASP.NET threads described in answer to right way to create thread in ASP.NET web application. So I would use a separate thread for each call: RenderSection1, RenderSection2, etc... Move the logic that takes up time, usually DB requests, into Application Service class in another DLL or External Web Service. Something like
OrderDTO GetDataForViewOrder(int orderID)
{
}
and use multiple threads in that DLL. This approach seems to provide the best scalability, but also introduces UI details into Application Services layer.
