Feb 1, 2010I need to do an update a field in database every x minutes. ie: a person login and I need to update a field related to they every X minutes until the value reach a value. Like this, this person start a count event from 1 to 10, they log off the web, but this count must remain countting until reachs 10, 1 by 1 every 7 minutes. I cannot do a SQL Job. Should I User a System.Timer??? Should I record the time and value of the last update, when the person log in I cauculate and update the value??

Sep 5, 2010i'm developing a site using VS2010 and with my windows vista busniness OS. i used the default VS2010 wizard for new web application to create it. included a folder in the root directory and created new aspx pages to derive from the master page in the root directory of my site. everything shows on the new pages except the jpeg image logo in the master page. But other aspx pages i created in the root directory shows every thing fine.

Combining CSS And JS In Master Pages And View Pages With SquishIt?
Jul 2, 2010How do you implement SquishIt to bundle Css/Js across View Pages and Render it in the Master page? I thought I could use a ContentPlaceHolder above the Render portion, but there seems to be some odd behavior where it sometimes adds 3 files (1 in the view page and 2 in the master page) but other times will ignore the file added from the View Page.

I want to give my users the ability to define new content pages (i.e. Categories: Sofas, Tables, Lamps, and add/delete as they see fit) through a management panel. The resulting content pages should have proper URL naming, so that they index properly.An example: http://www.example.com/products/Lamps/contentpage.aspx.Is there a demonstration of this somewhere I can view?

Top Level Master page
Second Level Master page inherited Top Level Master page
Third Level Master page inherited Second Level Master page
However, changes (i.e. new images & alt. name) that I made in the Top level master page did not apply to the second or third levels.My webpage has a correct front page but not in the sections. How can i correct this ?
Partial Rendering - Pages Are Taking Time To Load First Time?

As my pages are taking time to load first time.
So user has to wait till full page gets loaded and thats irritating . Was this the reason MVC was evolved?
Solution :Should i use partial rendering on all pages including home page, and all forms getting called from home page.
So even if half page is loaded thats less frustrating
For Partial rendering what i plan is : i will put Scriptmanager with Enable partial renderingand update panel for half part of page.
So that user dont have to wait for full page to load.
Is my plan correct? Problem is i cannot regenerate page load issue every time.

Jan 25, 2011I would like to provide my client with a aspx pages, with code behind provided, etc. But in some cases they will want to write their own markup - I'm thinking of having 2 directories [siblings of each other], one for the pages I provide, and the other for their custom markup. At page serve time, check to see if the client wrote their own markup and if so use it. Otherwise use the default provided.
In a nutshell I would like for my clients to be able to modify the pages I provide, but if they blow it up have a very easy way to back it out. Or to put it in a more positive light, allow them to override my pages easily.

Jan 26, 2011c#/vb webapp. I'm working on a very old app with a ton of pages. I want to add a function to every page's PreRender. If this application was designed properly from the start, it would use a MasterPage, or would at least inherit all pages from a BasePage other than System.Web.UI.Page.The goal is that every aspx page's PreRender should trigger a call to FooFunction(). I'd like to have this done all in one page, to avoid opening every single .aspx file and changing it's inheritence / pasting FooFunction() / some other time waster.Is there a way to do this in .net? Can you point me in the direction of any design/discussion articles?

The final tab is used to write the information to disk.I am trying to understand: When should serialization be used in a web app? The objects are stored in memory not on disk. Is this another means of passing objects between aspx pages? If so when should serialization be used vs. session objects? Sep 5, 2010I have a master page setup that is used throughout my site that is basically a header with a menu. I recently added a textbox and a button to this master page which is to be a quick search box that is available anywhere in the site. When a user enters text into the search box and hits the button, I need to load the actual content page which is used to search and show search results (which also uses this same master page), and have the text entered available so the search can be triggered automatically. Again, this search text box and button is now in my master page so it could be triggered from anywhere in the app... it serves as a convenient way to do a basic search from anywhere in my app, without having to first navigate to the actual 'search page' that already exists. You can also navigate to the actual search page, which uses the same master page, where there is many more search options.I'm thrown off by the master page arrangement, which I have not used until this project. What do I do?

Nov 15, 2010I'm working on a webforms aspx app (not MVC) and I'm not sure if I should just create separate pages or somehow make multiple views on the same aspx page for the following scenario: Basically, I need to give the user the option to view a set of data a few different ways (essentially different group by's from a data perspective)... the data is always the same, its just a matter of how to arrange on the page...
each way I need to present the data will essentially consist of 2 repeaters, one nested inside the other. The outer repeater will display a nice header section with the nested repeater showing the list of items under that heading. view by book title (title is outer repeater, with the book list being the nested repeater, yes, multiple books with same title for this example - the app has nothing to do with books, this is just to illustrate)

so what do I do here? Just making separate pages is simple and would work, but is there something else I should be considering? There will be 3 different views, so 3 pages total if I went that route. Something is making me think I should be doing this all within one aspx page? maybe just toggling the visible property of the repeater controls? but then I was thinking each of these repeater controls is databound, and I assume even if they are not visible they still incurred database hits to get the data, right? and that could be bad?
Converting Content Pages To Nested Master Content Pages In .net
Jul 28, 2010I have a main master page, say MasterPageMain, and a couple of folders with couple of pages in each folder which act as a child page to that master page - MasterPageMain.
Now, I have about 10 pages in one of the folder which follows a certain pattern and they could really use a nested pages since any change on some parts needs me to change all the pages which is a pain really.
I already added a Nested master page, say NestedMasterPage - which is a child of MasterPageMain
I tried to change one of the page's <%@ Page directive to NestedMasterPage, immediately, there were a lot of errors. plus I dint know where the NestedMasterPage's children content would go.
What do I need to know in order to do this succesfully?
ps: I dint do this initially because I only had 2 pages, and I dint need this at that time, as the project grew, now i see that I should have changed it much earlier..

Aug 19, 2010I have the following scenario,There is a master business object containing 40 fields2 separate child business objectsIf I update a child record, I have to update master's 'Last modify by' status along with 3 or more fields in masterFor this purpose, I don't want to initialize a separate Master class object (as most of the fields are unused/wasted)The 'last modify by' also gets updated if the records in master get updated themselvesCurrently I have separate business objects for master table, Child 1, Child 2 etc.
How do I control this in my business object design ? Do I break up my master object ? Architecture :: Loop Through Large Collection 100 Records At A Time?
Jan 21, 2011I am building a small mass email application for my department. Which basically emails out a notice to a large list of email addresses. Because the company email server limits the amount of email addresses that can be contained in a single email I have to break the list apart into smaller 100 email groups.
I've create the query to pull all email addresses needed, stuffed them into a collection but I am not sure how to grab 100 emails at a time and send it off to another sub to perform the email send before grabbing the next 100.

Architecture :: Running Time Consuming Process Behind The Scene?
Dec 23, 2010My web application currently requires users to upload files, after which I take it for "further processing". This processing is VERY time consuming and can take a while before the control gets back to the user. I would like to run this in the background and not have the user wait until this completes.
I know this question has been asked in this very forum before but I'm not able to understand or I'm not able to proceed in the right direction. My understanding is there are a few ways I can go about this
a) create a BackgroundWorker process in my Global.asax file that will spawn a process and take care of the activity.
b) create a web service that will do the processing for me .. (how?)
c) Use Ajax (Again how?)
