I am embarking on a project that allows a few administators to upload various files and then make them viewable to a subset of the other users that can login to the site. I'm planning on using ASP.NET MVC and was wondering what the best way would be to store the files? Two thoughts came to mind, storing direcly on the server in a folder and storing them in a SQL database.
The first seems like it might be the most logical but how do you prevent an authenticated user from simply typing in the address of a file that they are not permitted to view. My first thought was to setup the folder so that it would be browsed directly via the web.config, but then how does the user view the files they are supposed to view?
Alternatively, I figured if I stored the files in a SQL server, this would prevent the problem just presented but then how does one take, say a PDF file, store it in the database and then render it to a webpage when requested. Secondly, is this efficient to store files in a SQL server?
I am using NeatUpload file upload control: but issue can be generic i am thinking .. that's why posting on asp.net site...
Code works fine on my DEV machine (both file system and localhost) but when i deploy the code on Staging or Prod (on web server)... upload feature works fine but when I try to access the uploaded documents from staging server or Prod server, it says Access denied and cannot open the PDF document??
tried all the options but could not solve this issue... is this related to control or settings on my IIS...
before using NeatUpload(single upload) we were using microsoft upload control and it works fine in accessing the documents....
again upload works perfectly fine... the issue is accessing the documents..
I'm hoping this is an easy one...I'm using Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word to convert uploaded word documents into previewable html files. I haven't implemented it fully, but I've played around with it enough that I think I have a plan that will work... My question revolves around
[Code]....
I'm not in love with the idea of opening word and closing it everytime there's an upload (which I hope is a lot of the time) I'd like to make this a shared object that loads at application start. I have 2 questions that go along with this. 1. I imagine that winword could lock up and that would be a problem, right? 2. to save a document I use wordapp.ActiveDocument, this could have an issue as a shared object, right? I think I'm talking myself right out of this...
At my asp.net project I need display big documents to user. Beacuse document has a lot of text, I need use paging. Every page should have about 5000 symbols. I want split pages by logical tokens such as <br/> nbsp space.
We have a big portal that needs user registration to allow them use its services. It's already done in .NET and SOL Server 2005. we are in the phase now of discovering all the problems of the current registration system to build a new robust flexible one that can be extended easily and can be more usable for all services.
I was wondering about some best practices for data binding in web forms. For example we have a control:
public partial class MyUserControl : UserControl { public override void DataBind() {[code]...
If we wanted that control to bind its data automatically we would do something like this:
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (!this.IsPostBack)[code]...
In the first section of code if we do our data binding before the call to base.DataBind() (#1) then that means that, if for example we databind a ListView, we don't have to call ListView.DataBind() because when we call base.DataBind() on our control it recursively calls DataBind on all child controls. Also, we won't have access to any of the properties of the control that were assigned to it using the data binding code blocks <%# %>
If we do our binding on our controls after base.DataBind() (#2) then this means that DataBind is called on these controls twice. Once when base.DataBind() is called, and the second time when we are forced to call control.DataBind(). I can follow here that I don't know about?
EDIT: Looking at this page: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/w5e5992d.aspx
Use this method to bind data from a source to a server control. This method is commonly used after retrieving a data set through a database query. The method is primarily used by control developers; most controls perform data binding automatically. It appears that best practice is to bind controls data automatically. Databinding is for when we explicitly set a data source.
We are using Telerik RadEditor control in our project and having some problems with its integration with our user documents storage engine. We've implemented custom content provider for Telerik image manager and it shows correct documents in dialog. But in doesn't switch between images while selection. You can see this on this picture. We've tested this behaviour on the blank ASP.NET page without any additional CSS or JS. Rad editor tag could be found below. Please help! Why do this could happen?
I would like to ask you what is the best practice for developing composite user web control with multiple controls inside from the stand point of dealing with properieties. In my situation I would like to use header menu bar with logos, buttons, java baset visible/hidden menus itc as web control. I was successfull in implementing new control in my project.
But my question goes to issue of properties for ALL OF controls. I know how to hard code all required properties like: text, visible, enable for all controls. It's a lot of work. ( This is the very edge of my asp.net comprehension ) Is there a more elegant way provide an access to controls's properties without hard coding seperatelly?
I've a classified ads system on ASP.NET/c#/MS SQL, and I'm trying to figure out where to store the images that people upload when placing an ad. The ad itself is being stored in a SQL server database.
The images are now being stored in a subfolder of my webapp. It seems to work fine, however I only recently discovered a big problem. Everytime a user deletes an ad, the attached images are to be deleted as well including the folder they reside in. This leads to a restart of the asp.net application. I searched internet and found that restarting the web-app is actually intended behaviour when a subfolder is being deleted.
I can remove these images including the folders they are stored in?
I can acces them using a URL (the images need to be shown in the webpages) Without getting the web-app being restarted?
In my asp.net application, user can send/upload aspx files & those files can be accessed by the users later(there need to implement code level security as it would be better to run the application with minimal permission). So now I need to store these files & where is the better place to store in it. Shall I create a folder giving low permission inside the current project? or shall I create separate virtual directory like "www.mydomain.com/files" & place in it. I want to prevent the restarting of application domain also.
I am using CK Editor, in my application every user have his separate email templates. I want to store images to user specific and user should not view other user uploaded images when browse to Server to upload images
I have a page that loads a two different files that the user uploaded during page_load. The code is an example I used from the aspsnippets site. The files are stored in a server folder while the location is saved in the database. The code below gets all files in the folder and binds them to a gridview.
Dim filePaths() As String = Directory.GetFiles(Server.MapPath("~/Uploads/2012/emp/")) Dim files As List(Of ListItem) = New List(Of ListItem) For Each filePath2 As String In filePaths files.Add(New ListItem(Path.GetFileName(filePath), filePath)) Next gvEmp.DataSource = files gvEmp.DataBind()
What I want to do is to get only one file per user as the fileID along with the location is saved in for every user. I ran a query to get the fileLocation and pass that location stored in the database instead of the current server path but I can't figure out how I would do it.
I am a new-bie in Asp.Net.I am working in a project where I need to store an attachment which will be uploaded by the user in radGrid into Sql server 2005 database. After storing this attachment, I have to retrieve this attcahment and show the same to the other users in radGrid so that they will be able to download the attachment and see that. How should I do that?what kind of datatype would it be?
My printing task is different from other web projects.
I will explain the task clearly.
I have 3 DIV Tags in a web page.
When I click Print All button in the web page, i have to store the contents of 3 DIV tags in rich text format file. Then i perform some codings for modifying the contents of 3 DIV Tags. Similarly i have to store the contents of them in same rich text file (appending to a file after page break) and so on.
I'm working with an asp.net application that produces large PDF documents from HTML. The content is perhaps complex (detailed grid type listings, css styled, running to 40+ pages) compared to typical usage. None of the libraries we've tried are performing adequately. Typically a 40 page document is taking upwards of a minute to render on a powerful multi-core machine.
We are able to decouple the generation from the web application and also pre-generate documents in some cases. Still, the frequency with which content changes requires a faster solution.
So, does anyone have experience of a PDF generation component that can output a content heavy 40 page document in seconds rather than minutes? Or are our expectations unrealistic?
NB: I'd rather not "out" the poorly performing components here as we are seeking support from vendors to make improvements. I've reviewed previously questions posted on StackOverflow and none appear to deal with this type or size of document.
In my project there is many documents and images in my site and i need to convert all files such as .doc,.bmp,.jpg,.txt in a folder to in adobe format(.pdf) and display in a browser as one complete .pdf file The folder may contain images ,word docs and excel docs powerpoint and Pdfs so how this can be done in ASP with vb.net.
I'm building an asp.net mvc application. I have to make posible automatic printing of some documents. I'm wondering where should I save this documents. If I save them to a folder in solution will they be accessible when application is deployed on server? I'm planning on build console application that will be triggered at particular time from windows service and load documents that are saved in that folder and print them one by one.
my requirement is i want to upload word documents and pdf documents into my website with security (i mean encryption) and i want to retrieve documents by giving password the document should visible(or the document should visible for only some people how to do it)
I have a VB.net page that displays lots of data and gridviews. In one of the gridviews, are links to .pdfs that are associated with the data being displayed. As a "close-out" process when the user is done with the page, I need to figure out a way to take those .pdfs that are showing, and merge them into one .pdf. Is this possible in .NET?
Using data posted by a mobile app to my database (via a web api) I will need to create PDF forms with the data filled in as if a user did that. I never did PDF generation, so some "points" that might decide what to use:
-Forms are pretty much a tabular structure. -Some pages are in portrait, while others in landscape. -Some columns have the data printed vertically. -I will need to put images (saved in database, byte arrays) in some fields.
From what I read so far ITextSharp seems to be a popular choice?
