Changing MS SQL Collation To Store Different Types Of Characters?
Oct 28, 2010
I am working on a website where the content has to be displayed in English, Polish, Slovak and Czech. Currently, everytime a special character used in the non-english languages (such as Á or â), it displays as just a normal A or a. I've traced the problem down to the database. Currently the collation is "Latin1_General_CI_AS", and when the special foreign characters are put on to the server, the server saves it as a normal standard english character.
I've looked at several answers, but most seem to change the database collation within the SQL query, and this is something that isn't feasible for me to do (due to the size of the site). What I'm trying to do is find a collation for the database that will allow the foreign characters to be saved as well as the english characters (a bit like how UTF-8 works in HTML).
I have a application that takes a tab delimited text file parses and the inserts the data. Some of the data has international characters. My problem is it appears that my application is changing the characters. For Example the file might contain something lke this Andrlová and is converting it to this Andrlov
I am passing this into a sproc. The datatypes for my paramater & DB Field is nVarChar(50). If I insert the data directly into my table or if I call my sproc from a query window and pass in some data it works fine, but when my app touches the data it appears to get messed with.
Can anyone tell me the best way of storing Japanese characters through ASP.NET. I have to put characters into a asp:textbox on one page, which saves it to an Access DB. On a second page I want to display the content in a asp:label. Should I store the characters directly to the database or should they be encoded, and how do I encode the characters? In my web.config i have:
EDIT: Purpose of this Website: Its called Utopiapimp.com. It is a third party utility for a game called utopia-game.com. The site currently has over 12k users to it an I run the site. The game is fully text based and will always remain that. Users copy and paste full pages of text from the game and paste the copied information into my site. I run a series of regular expressions against the pasted data and break it down. I then insert anywhere from 5 values to over 30 values into the DB based on that one paste. I then take those values and run queries against them to display the information back in a VERY simple and easy to understand way. The game is team based and each team has 25 users to it. So each team is a group and each row is ONE users information. The users can update all 25 rows or just one row at a time. I require storing things into cache because the site is very slow doing over 1,000 queries almost every minute.
So here is the deal. Imagine I have an excel EDIT(Excel is just an example of how to imagine it, I don't actually use excel) spreadsheet with 100 columns and 5000 rows. Each row has two unique identifiers. One for the row it self and one to group together 25 rows a piece. There are about 10 columns in the row that will almost never change and the other 90 columns will always be changing. We can say some will even change in a matter of seconds depending on how fast the row is updated. Rows can also be added and deleted from the group, but not from the database. The rows are taken from about 4 queries from the database to show the most recent and updated data from the database. So every time something in the database is updated, I would also like the row to be updated. If a row or a group has not been updated in 12 or so hours, it will be taken out of Cache. Once the user calls the group again via the DB queries. They will be placed into Cache.
The above is what I would like. That is the wish.In Reality, I still have all the rows, but the way I store them in Cache is currently broken. I store each row in a class and the class is stored in the Server Cache via a HUGE list. When I go to update/Delete/Insert items in the list or rows, most the time it works, but sometimes it throws errors because the cache has changed. I want to be able to lock down the cache like the database throws a lock on a row more or less. I have DateTime stamps to remove things after 12 hours, but this almost always breaks because other users are updating the same 25 rows in the group or just the cache has changed. This is an example of how I add items to Cache, this one shows I only pull the 10 or so columns that very rarely change. This example all removes rows not updated after 12 hours:
DateTime dt = DateTime.UtcNow; if (HttpContext.Current.Cache["GetRows"] != null) {
For some reason, some of the fields in our database use a different collation than the default. There doesn't seem to be a pattern as to which fields use the different collations, so I'd like to run a query to find which fields use this collation and change them to the default. Does anyone know how to do this?
In my form there are about 6 parameters and two of them have multiple values, upto 6. I'm imposed by the restrictions that I can't change the table structure. The table have 8 fields one for ID as primary key, one for foreign key and other to store data. The two fields which have multiple values are color and size. A size may have different colors and vice versa.
The programmer which have developed the site earlier used a stored procedure to store the data in database. And he implemented the above scenario one by one for each color/size. Now I have to put all in one.
How can I do this. As I can't change the table structure at current moment as this will disturb the whole E-commerce site.
I need to know how to change aspnetdb to store profile information unique to each user so that I can restrict records in an sql table to only show that user's records.
So if I make a "companyID" int, identity column where would I put it?
Also, when I write the where clause to companyID = profile (companyID) would that work?
I have an application that allows admins to add types such as document types and training types that are in seperate tables with a foreign key in a transaction table.
When structuring my class I decided to go with an abstract-like pattern (without the factory methods though). So I have a Type abstract class that defines my Save, Delete, and GetList methods. I have a training type class that inherits this class. The thing is all types have 3 main properties - defined in the abstract base - but have different source tables and thus different store procedures in my DbCommand object. So basically I repeat setting up the same parameters on all the derived classes. I would like to implement the common stuff in the base but I am getting thrown off by the difference in data sources.
I have a string with 100 characters and it is for me too long in one line. I want to make NewLine after each 25 characters. For example:
Instead: "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consetetur sadipscing elitr, sed diam nonumy eirmod tempor invidunt ut labore et dolore magna aliquyam erat, sed diam voluptua."
I seem to be getting the following error when trying to do an inner join on a new table I have recently created. The only way I have got around this so far is to put "COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS" into my join. Cannot resolve the collation conflict between "SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS" and "SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CS_AS" in the equal to operation.
I have not seen this error previously when doing joins, and it is a real pain. My only thoughts are that I have recently added the ASP.NET Security tables to my database - could this be causing the issue? Is there a conflict with collation going on? Although all my tables seem to be using the same Collation as the "aspnet" tables when I look at the extended properties of each table.
The problem is when am assigning my session table value to newly created table and if now am changing any coloumn name then the session table value also changing.
But my question is am assigning Session value to newly created table so how should session value should be affected?
hey folks I got a general question that maybe some of you can just weigh in. I developed an online store for a client and people place orders online for a food ordering place however I am trying to find the best way to have the orders show up for them at the store. Currently I am sending an email and an autoprint software prints it out which works most of the time but not good enough sometimes it doesn't print. Anyone had similar issues or have other alternative solutions you may have heard off? Like I said the site sends an email to the customer and the store's email account.
Its related to datatable in gridview store in session and then session retrive and store to database. basically i am using gridview here creating new row for button click and these row adding untill user's last entry then submit all these entry to database. so i want to use session variable to store this data temporarily and after final entry user click on submit button and all data shold be save in db.
Is it better to store images directly in a database or to just store the name of the file in the db and display that file? I would think that just storing the filename of the image would keep the db size low...
Web service error response (code/message etc) would you store it in a database? or would you keep the error response in a method.By the time I'm done with this, there will be hundreds of error response, maybe in the future, thousands? (I dont know yet, depends how large this web service grows).EDIT: error response is the response returned back to the application via the web service, (not to be confused with error logging).
with this I am getting 75 messges and i am displaying all the Messages in the Grid with two columns MessageText and MessageType But I need to write a Linq Query to get all my Distinct MessageTypes from Messages?
I need to look for specific types in all assemblies in a web site or windows app, is there an easy way to do this? Like how the controller factory for ASP.NET MVC looks across all assemblies for controllers.
