Configuration :: How To Created A Simple Web Application That Calls A COM Object

Jun 28, 2010

I have searched the vast information highway and found nothing but road blocks!I have created a simple web application that calls a COM object like we've all done before. Well this time, the COM interop don't want to work due to DCOM Identity CRISIS. The only way I can get it to work is to physically log in to the web server and thenrun my web application.

DataSource Controls :: Timeout On Simple Calls?

Feb 8, 2010

I am creating a simple function that loops through a database, grabs all the tables and (for now) just spits out the first column name. The query I am using is very quick and simple and takes about 1 second to excecute in SQL, I have double and tripple checked this time. However, when my app makes the call, I keep getting a timeout error on about 25% of my calls, none of them should take over 2 seconds...let alone the entire timeout period, and I have no idea why.The section of code that errors out is inside the loop through all the table names (sqldr is the datareader and "name" will get me the name of the table)

C# - Is A New Object That's Created In A Static Property Getter Only Created Once

Jan 11, 2010

I'm creating a static helper class for web services I'm writing. I'm tapping into the API of Telligent and therefore creating these Telligent "service" objects that allow me to do things with the platform. For example, I'm creating a MembershipSerice object in my helper class so I can do membership stuff with the same object. In my helper class I have a property with a getter that creates a new one of these objects:

private static MembershipService _MembershipService {
get return new MembershipService(path, usr, pwd);

MVC :: "Object Reference Not Set To An Instance Of An Object." In Ajax Calls

Feb 25, 2010

I have a list of items on my page. There is a button in each row to edit that record. Record is being edited in jquery modal window. So I make an asynchronous call to server to display detail information about record without full page refresh.

User fills in data about that record and submits. If everything is ok, user is redirected back to page. But if validation fails I want to display that entry form again with errors.

If this call is done synchronously, users gets back form with filled data and errors, but without styles and javascript (because they are referenced from mail page) - that is ok

So I just wanted to refresh that modal dialog with asynchronous call. The problem is that Html.DropDownList or Html.TextBox extension methods fail with null reference exception. I have checked that real data are passed in as second parameter.

So I don`t understand where that null reference exception occurs, or what can I do?

The same call works if it is synchronous (Html.BeginForm) but fails if it is asynchronous (Ajax.BeginForm)

what can I do with it?

C# - How To Get A Reference To The Page Object In An Asmx It Calls

Feb 13, 2010

I have a page that calls on an asmx within the project (for some ajax stuff). Within that asmx I'm calculating a value and returning it to be output to the screen.

However I need to do a recalculation that includes summing this value with a few others. The function that performs the calculation is in a UserControl on the page.

How do I get a reference to the page object so I can use FindControl to get an instance of the user control so I can call that calcuation function?

Configuration :: .net App That Calls An Exe Under Alternate User Context?

Mar 28, 2011

I'm banging my head against a wall here... can't get to the bottom of this issue. I have code that works fine when debugging in visual studio but breaks when deployed to both IIS 6 and IIS 7.5. Basically, it uses Process and ProcessStartInfo to start a program
(a command line tool, exe) and redirect the output to the web page. It uses the username and password properties of the ProcessStartInfo class to run the exe tool as a specific user. The tool requires admin privelages so I need to run it as such, but certianly don't want to run the IIS service or the asp.net app pool under an admin context.

No exception occurs when run on IIS, but it does not work, when trying to run on IIS 6 I get this error dialog: "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on ok to terminate the application." It's obviously a security/config issue, but what specifically is the culprit? For IIS 6, an application pool was created for this, runs under 'network service', as usual, but again the process being started by the system.diagnostics.process class is run under a different account, which is an administrator account. For IIS 7.5, same thing,an app pool was created, so it runs under the 'iis appPoolNameOfPool' context.

ADO.NET :: Simple Databinding With LINQ Causing Object Reference Not Set?

Aug 15, 2010

I have a user control with a datalist. I just want to do some simple binding but keep getting an object reference not set to an instance of an object error. The following is the code, I am sure I am just missing something simple:

Dim dc As Forms.DataClassesDataContext = New Forms.DataClassesDataContext
Dim formQuery = From fq In dc.v_form_questions _
Where fq.FormTypeID = FormTypeID _

[code]...

When I debug, I see values for the formQuery; I am also able to loop through the formQuery and response.write a field out, however every time I try to bind it to a databound control, I get the Object reference not set to an instance of an object error.I initally was using a simple LinqDataSource object, but needed to set the where parameter to the FormTypeID property of this usercontrol. I had a Where condition defined on Page Init, but started getting the object reference error.

Configuration :: Hosting Provider Doesn't Allow Watchers Or Calls From The Global.asax?

Aug 31, 2010

I've put together some code that processes XML files as they're uploaded to the server using the FileSystemWatcher for one of my clients. The XML is uploaded every hour, and the FSW watches a set directory for new files. All is well and works fine in my development environment but I'm using my clients hosting provider (www.webhostforasp.net) and when uploading a new XML file it appears that nothing is happening? It is possible that the hosting provider doesn't allow watchers or calls from the Global.asax?

What would be the best way to find out what's going on there, considering that without running the site in debug mode, I've got no way of knowing what's going on with the Global.asax or the FSW?

Calls To Successive Calls On Repeater With XML Datasource Is Not Binding New Data?

Feb 17, 2010

I have the following Page_Load function...

protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
XmlDataSource1.Data = GetXmlFromFile(Request.QueryString["file"]);
XmlDataSource1.DataBind();
Repeater1.DataBind();
}

The page in which this Page_Load resides is called by a parent page. Each time this Page_Load gets called the value of "file" in the query string will be different. So each time I will be receiving the XML contents from a different file which are inserted into the XmlDataSource and then bound against by the Repeater. Getting the XML data from the file works great but when I bind against the repeater that only works the first time through Page_Load. Each time after that when this code is executed the same results from the first XML file are displayed in the repeater.

What am I missing here. How can I get the XML data to be bound against the repeater on each page load instead of just the first one?

Multiple Webservice Calls / Some Of Its Calls Are Duplicated (with Difference Of Milliseconds)

May 10, 2010

I have a webservice (ASP.NET) deployed on a webfarm. A client application consumes it on daily basis. The problem is that some of its calls are duplicated (with difference of milliseconds). For example I have a function Foo(string a,string b). The client app calls this webmethod as Foo('test1','test2') once but my log shows that it is being called twice or sometimes 3 or 4 times randomly. Is this anything wrong with the webfarm or the code? Note that the webmethod has simple straighfarward insert and update statements.

Configuration :: Populate Charts - Object Reference Not Set To An Instance Of An Object

Dec 20, 2010

I've got a web application I've built that makes various database calls to render some charts and datagrids for MI reporting purposes. I've got my database calls initiating on Page_Load within the .vb for each page. The site impersonates identity for database access. Page_Load returns a datatable and populates an HTML table inside an ASP:Repeater. Still with me? Well, everything works fine here. My problem is within the Default.aspx.vb Page_Load sub.

The Page_Load sub (in Default.aspx.vb) returns a datatable the same way as the others but instead of rendering the results to a repeater, the datatable is saved as Session("dt"). The saved session "dt" is then used to populate a couple of charts I've got on the home page(default.aspx):

<script
runat="server">
Public
Function buildXML(ByVal Product
As
String,
ByVal reportNameStr
As
String)
As
String
Dim clDB
As
New clDB
