Jul 12, 2011I have a simple intranet site. It has a role based authorization in the web.config file.
Any user's in a specific role called as "Apr-Sales-Writers" will be authorized to use those pages. If not, they will not be authorized. So far so good. Works fine. But we added additional functionality where a new active directory group (means new role) has to be added and user's belonging to this new AD group should be given access to only specific .aspx pages on the intranet site. I am using a web.sitemap and it looks like this.
If the user's belong to say AD group "Apr-Sales-Writers", they should access only default.aspx and salesData.aspx pages. User's belonging to new AD group (which I did not include in the web.config file below), should have access to other .aspx pages.

Plan On Learning Both Languages Over Time, But Curious In The Order You Learned Both Technologies?
Jun 21, 2010This is a question for who works with both PHP and ASP.NET/C#/VB.I plan on learning both languages over time, but I am curious in the order you learned both technologies? And Why?Maybe you just chose by time/ease to become good in the language or you just prefer one language over the other.I want to learn both technologies so, if for some reason my projects don't workout, I have a backup plan as a web developer for clients. I would really like to service both sides of the isle, Windows and LAMP

Feb 4, 2010I have a few sites that use the same application but use details to populate the site content such as title, logo and theme based on the URL. These details are stored in a database.
What is the best way to populate these details. I was thinking this should be done in the Global.asax rather then my page.master
I have a master page that is used for all the sites and had the code called ther but it might be better to do the database calls in Global rather then in the master page?
Add Per Request - Token Based Authentication To Mvc Site
Apr 4, 2011I have an existing asp.net mvc website that uses basic forms authentication. The site has a login page that posts back to a login action, which logs the user in via FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(). I am looking to add an api to the site, as an mvc2 area, where users would be authenticated based on a token passed as an http header. This area will consist of only json actions, so redirecting the user to a login page doesn't make sense. Instead, I want the users to just pass a token along with each request. That token is mapped to each user account and the user would be authenticated automatically.
I'm struggling with where to put this logic. At this point, the best choice seems to be adding the header lookup logic and authentication to the Global.asax in the Application_AuthenticateRequest method. I want to avoid needing to redirect the user after calling FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(), though. I want the login action to be transparent to them. Am I approaching this the wrong way? As a side note: Requiring a username/password for api requests is not possible, as the site has a mix of users. Some joined using OpenID while the rest joined with a username/password.

Configuration :: Existing Site Based On NopCommerce 1.6 CMS (.Net 3.5)?
Sep 12, 2010I'm working on an existing site based on nopCommerce 1.6 CMS (.Net 3.5) I'm using VS2010 and C#.I can create new pages and new .cs code to go with it but when I'm trying to chage existng code on .aspx pages inside the nopCommerce classes I can't build/re-build the project. the compiler just can't find the chages to the .cs code for example - when I add a simple button to the .aspx and an OnClick event to the .cs and trying to build the project it just can't find the OnClick event code on the codeBehind page and the build fails.I understand the project is pre-compiled (there are alot of .dll files in the bin directory)
even if I'll delete the entire .cs file and build the build will succeed - it is as if the build doesn't work at all... doesn't the build/re-build suppose to re-create the .dll files? I've tried changing the target .Net framework for the compiler - doesn't seem to be the problem here.Another thing - every .aspx page comes with both .cs file and .designer.cs file. the .designer.cs file look something like this: [Code]....

Feb 22, 2010We have a scenario whereby we are hosting an ASP.NET MVC web site on behalf of someone else.The customer in this case wants us to restrict access to the web site, to those users who have logged in to their main portal. They should then only be able to get to our web site via a link from that portal.At this point I'm not yet sure what technology or authentication mechanism the 3rd party are using but just wanted to clarify what the possible options might be.If we call our hosted site B, and their portal web site A,as I see it we could:Check the referrer for all requests to B, unless they've come from A they can't get inCheck for a specific cookie (assuming A uses cookies)

Mar 24, 2011I am doing a simple secured site using the login control. I would like users to be redirected to their dashboard page once they log in, but after that if they choose to browse I do NOT want them redirected based on their login status. I am using the generic template provided in VWD with the basic login setup in the template including the tabbed ASP menu control - nothing fancy, nothing custom. This is intended to be something very simple and quick. Here is the code I am using for the page load...

So if I do this code WITHOUT the "IsPostBack", logged in users are always redirected to their dashboard and cannot see the hompage. However with that IsPostBack test, the redirect after initial login doesn't work.
I know this is extremely basic and simple, but I am restarting with this stuff after a year away, and I need a nudge.

Oct 19, 2010I want to make a 2nd website and am using a copy of the site files from my 1st site built for me, I added them via FTP to the hosting company. I realise when I edit the new site via the CMS it is editing both sites plus when I try to change anything to the CSS file I get the following error -

So my questions are what do I need to change to be able to deploy a new site with the files I have to make a new site?I also don't understand where the password is coming from, I can see the User ID comes from the database. in the Asp.net connection strings are the following:

Sep 30, 2010I hosted two asp.net web project in IIS with unique VirtualDirectory (sample and Sample2). Now i access a web page from Sample site and from this page i'm sending request to a web page in a site Sample2 with some values through Query String. I got the page and the values from query string.
Now my problem is, instead of sending values through QueryString is there is any other way to pass values from one site to another. Because, i never give the url for the second site to client. They know only the first site url based on user input i'll redirect it to the second site. Problem is user can see the values passed through QueryString and there is a chance to bookmark that link by user, it just like hacking. I donot want the user to do that.

On Web Site 1, I have to provide controls to enter user id and password and which have to be validated on Web Site 2 on server B, after validating them I have to redirect the user to Web site 2.

Note: On Web Site 2, user login functionality is already existing and it is provided by ASP.Net login control, am not sure how to handle the user login process from two different places.

Oct 21, 2010Using Visual Web Developer 2010 Express. I was used to creating a web app anytime and I would get a default page for starters and be happy. But today I find that when I pick either the ASP.NET Web Site or ASP.NET Web Application templates I get site.master and a bunch of site admin files that I don't want. Alternately when I select the empty versions of those templates, I get almost nothing at all. An almost empty web.config page and no Default.aspx page. There is nothing magical about having a default.aspx page in place, but it is an indicator of a change when I can only get a virtually completely empty website or a website with a bunch of bells and whistles I don't want.
Also, for some reason, when I create a new app or website as just noted, in the Solution Explorer I get aspx.designer.cs files showing as well as web.config files for both debug and release. Somehow some settings and templates must have changed, or am I missing something here? How can I get my settings/templates to go back to the way they were?

Feb 2, 2010I am having a little difficulty trying to wrap my head around site structures. I have quite a large asp.net site, for which: Admins can see a user list, Each user can have many accounts, and for each account can have many items. I can picture this as a breadcrumb trail of editing a particular item. User List > Mr Bob > Accounts > BOB77 > Items > Item32 > Edit
User List = All the users Mr Bob = A user the administrator has selected from the User List Accounts = A list of the user's accounts 12BOB = The administrator has selected the account named 12BOB Items = A list of the items an account contains Item32 = The item that the administrator selected Edit = The action that the administrator wants to do. I can picture how this would look like if it was using ASP.NET MVC with the URL, but I am unsure how to map this out using Webforms, and in the physical filesystem.
This is what I have thought up about how I am guessing the physical structure would look like. Will this have to use session variables to achieve what I am trying to do?

Mar 28, 2011i have an asp.net website which contains a link to a legacy site written in classic asp which has vb 6 classes (dll) in the back ground also.here is what i am trying to achieve:-i want to browse to the asp.net website using IE7,then when the link is clicked then enters the classic asp site i want to start debugging the classic asp and step through it.(also to make things worse, once a the vb6 class is instanciated, and a call make to its method i want to debug the method in the vb 6 code)My system :- XP Pro, IIS 5, Visual Studio 2005 (asp.net project ), Visual interdev 6 (classic asp project) Visual Basic 6 (vb 6 classes compiled into dll)i have been trying everything with no joy, there is lots on the net but nothing seems to have worked.i have the back office components installed so asp debugging is possible, i have configured the asp website s debugging is turned on.if i add a breakpoint to the classic asp site and hit the start button in visual interdev i can step through it fine.My problem is that if i attach interdev to a process (iexplorer.exe or dll.host) then the breakpoints are not hit. if anyone can help me with this it would be great.ont top of that, if anyone can explain to me how to also debug the vb6 dll code in visual basic 6 when it is called from the classic asp site that would be great!

Jul 28, 2010I have 2 sites, one the main product site the other a secure site featuring the basket and checkout processes.
When a user clicks "add item to basket" I am creating a basket in a database and then adding the items to the basket. The theory was then to store the id from the database for the basket (the basketid) in a cookie, redirect the user to secure site, use the basket id from the cookie and display the contents in the basket.
However I am having trouble getting the secure site to use the same cookie. When I redirect the users to the secure site, the basket appears empty. I need to go back to the main site and then back to secure before the cookie appears.

And then on the secure site this is how it gets the basket ID from the cookie

But like I say it's having problems. I've tried replacing the cookies with session variables as well but it didn't work.
