Custom Server Controls :: Writing Image Binary Data To The Response

Sep 21, 2010

I've created 2 web user controls. A = User control that displays an image, and B is the user control that hosts A. I'm trying to stream an array of bytes to A, but it seems like the Response.BinaryWrite method completely overwrites any heirachial controls (I can't see any of B's other controls besides the image).

How do I get A to just display the image from the byte stream? It doesn't come from a database, it's an image I created on the fly.

A's code:

SQL Server :: Binary Data Not Writing To Database?

Sep 24, 2010

I have an ASP.NET app that writes binary data to a SQL database. It worked fine using SQL Express, but does not ever write the data using SQL Server 2008 R2. SQL Profiler shows the binary data in the UPDATE query, but nothing happens... no errors, no data saved. Does anyone know what I'm missing? Other data types work fine.

My data type is VarBinary(MAX)...

Http - Writing A Custom NTLM Challenge/response In C#?

Jan 18, 2011

I know that you can enable NTLM authentication in an ASP.Net app using:

<authentication mode="Windows" />

However - I need to handle Forms, HTTP and other custom authentications in the same app, so ASP.Net's limited built-in support is no use.

The NTLM handshake should be fairly simple:

Request - [unauthenticated - no user info passed]
Response - 401 Unauthorized
WWW-Authenticate: NTLM
Request - Authorization: NTLM <base64-encoded type-1-message>

[code]...

I need to parse type-1 and type-3 messages and generate a type-2 message.

The structure for those messages is well documented but fairly complex - it seems very messy to write my own message generators and parsers. I think the methods to read and write these messages should already be in .Net, but I haven't been able to find them.

Custom Server Controls :: Pointers On Writing Server Control?

Nov 15, 2010

I'm a little stuck here, with my first server control. I'll just post the whole thing, as I'm sure I've done plenty of mistakes. The main thing for me to find out is if there's a more elegang way to write this.

What I'm trying to accomplish here is to write a panel with custom HTML inside it. Inside the custom HTML, I need to put some server controls I can actually reach. My attempt at finding the span in the code failed, so there's obviously something wrong.

[Code]....

Obviously, I've only just begun, but I'd really value some feedback before I dig myself in too deep ;)

How To Write A Binary Image To A Database Using C# And A Custom Http Hander

Jan 30, 2011

The thinking behind the question is that my image current reads it's data from a custom httphandler that gets the image from the database. I want to be able to use a file upload control to "post" a replacement file back to a "write" handler, updating the database. Then I can refresh my image using javascript to the original "read" handler. Is this possible?

I currently have a standard postback model upload process which puts the image into the database and a custom handler to read it back. What I want to know, is can you create a custom http handler to perform the upload so I could asynchronously call the upload handler then refresh the image src to pull it back from the database. At the moment I am using the IFrame approach to make it appear asynchronous, I just want to know the best practice really

Write Binary Data As A Response In MVC Web Control?

Apr 28, 2010

I am trying to get a control (not a controller -- a subclass of System.Web.UI.WebControls.WebControl), that can be used that I wrote for ASP.NET to work in an ASP.NET MVC environment. Normally, the control does the normal thing, and that works fine

Sometimes it needs to respond by clearing the response, writing an image to the response stream and changing the content type. When you do this, you get an exception "OutputStream is not available when a custom TextWriter is used".

If I were a page or controller, I see how I can create custom responses with binary data, but I can't see how to do this from inside a control's render functions. To simplify it -- imagine I want to make a web control that renders to:

<img src="pageThatControlIsOn?controlImage">

And I know how to look at incoming requests and recognize query strings that should be routed to the control. Now the control is supposed to respond with a generated image (content-type: image/png -- and the encoded image). In ASP.NET, we:

Response.Clear();
Response.OutputStream.Write(thePngData); // this throws in MVC
// set the content type, etc
Response.End();

How am I supposed to do that in an ASP.NET MVC control?

Custom Server Controls :: Custom Control Image Not Rendering In Visual Studio Design Mode

Apr 25, 2010

I have a simple HttpHandler that generates a dynamic image based on query string parameters and a custom web control that renders an image tag pointing to the handler as its 'src' attribute. All works fine when run in the web server, but at design timethe control displays as the "missing image" icon (red x in a box). The handler is registered in the web.config with a ".ashx" extension. The RenderContents method in the control looks like this:

output.AddAttribute("src", ResolveUrl(string.Format("~/Sparklines.SparkHandler.ashx?stype=pm&w={0}&h={1}&sv={2}&ev={3}&cv={4}&sc={5}&ec={6}&mc={7}&gs={8}",
Width.IsEmpty ? 100 : Width.Value,
Height.IsEmpty ? 15 : Height.Value,
caleStart, ScaleEnd, CurrentValue,
ColorUtils.ColorString(StartColor, true),

SQL Server :: Writing/Saving DataType Image As File To Disk?

Mar 16, 2011

i need to save multiple documents stored in SQL server as Image type to disk.

What i want to do is "backup" all files in a table (column) to disk, zip them and Response.TransmitFile(FilePath) to client.

I could use C# ot VB but that would require a lot of connections to database or a lot of server memory and i don't want that, becauze there are a lot of files to be saved Since SQL can write files to disk i was thinking about saving those files to disk directly from sql. Something like when u're doing a backup
