DataContext Not Visible When Choosing Data Source For LinqDataSource?
Apr 1, 2010
I have a page on which I've thrown a LinqDataSource and a GridView. I've created a DataContext LINQ-to-SQL class called dcResidents.dbml. When I attempt to configure the LinqDataSource to utilize the dcResidents data context - it doesn't appear in the list of options...though under class view (tab in VS) it does appear.
I do have several other working datacontexts - why is this one not being recognized by VS?

How do I handle using e.Result when my datasource was shaped (select new{})? example aspx markup below:
[Code]....
1) since I shaped, it's an anonymous type right? so what do I cast e.Result to in order to be able to get at the data? 2) I am thinking of using the selected event to handle some conditional page setup based on whether or not any results were actually found from the main query (the one that is used to bind data to a gridView via this linqdatasource control)... so I need to check for count > 0 and if it is, I need to fill a few dropdown controls based on a few new queries

I am trying to populate the ListView using LinqDataSource data source but the issue I am having is.I need to load the listview on Search button click action.
IN the page_load I kept like this:
===========================================
LinqDS.Selecting += new EventHandler<LinqDataSourceSelectEventArgs>(LinqDS_Selecting);
protected void LinqDS_Selecting(object sender, LinqDataSourceSelectEventArgs e)
{
e.Result = ObjectDS;
}
=============================================
This works fine but this happens on page load,i want this binding to happen on button click?is there a way to do this?

I developed an asp.net mvc application. In one of my forms, I'm getting a following
exception:
A public action method 'UpdateBasket' could not be found on controller 'App.Controllers.WebShopController'
But the funny thing is, that form submit works (even in debug mode) and finds an
ActionMethod UpdateBasket and returns View. The problem is that because of that html generated error w3c validators and google crawlers can't access the site (I think so, correct me if I'm wrong).

Using StringBuilder im building my object in code behind so its customize for our needs.. I placed a Literal control within the modalpopup and populating it when you click on a button..On my test page everything works great to display it and when fed a value video file, it plays.. on that page, it wasnt contained within a modalpopup.Now on my actual dev page that i need it on, i placed the literal control within the modalpopup, and when you click on the button, it builds the object..my modal popup comes up and everything shows up except the object which is weird, because within the stringbuilder i have 4 buttons below the object and those show up, just not the object control itself.. can a object not be built and displayed like this?What makes it weirder is that when the modal popup opens, you can view the source of the page and my entire customize object control is there, but it just doesnt render on the page..

I've read several other questions on this topic (here, here, and here), but have yet to see a great answer. I've developed my fair share of data access layers before and personally prefer to use instance classes instead of static classes. However, it is more of a personal preference (I like to test my business objects, and this approach makes mocking out the DAL easier). I have used static classes to access the database before, but I've always felt a little insecure in the appropriateness of such a design (especially in an ASP.NET environment).
Can anyone provide some good pros/cons with regards to these two approaches to developing data access classes with ADO.NET providers (no ORM), in an ASP.NET application in particular. Feel free to chime in if you have some more general static vs. instance class tips as well.
In particular, the issues I'm concerned about are:
Threading & concurrency
Scalability
Performance
Any other unknowns

I have a dropdownlist for categories.
DataTextField = "Name";
DataValueField = "ID";
drp.Items.Clear();
drp.Items.Add(new ListItem("--select category--", ""));
drp.AppendDataBoundItems = true;
ID is int and I've got this
drpsub.Items.Add(new ListItem("--select category--", ""));
I want to insert some information plus ID in databaseeverything is ok when user select category from dropdownlist (for example: India, Iran, China) but when the userchoose --select category-- she face an error because the value here is "" not an ID(int value)how can i don't let user choose --select subcategory-- ?

look at this sample link address: (weather.gov) [URL] if you view page source in browser, you can see that it shows data in XML format (usng xsl.?). I need to implement a simple web page like that. I think that web site uses XML XSL I'm going to implement a web application in asp.net which will use data stored in sql database (or xml database or web service) and show these information like other normal web sites but in xml format in nice UI (using xsl?).That Weather website is only a sample to show what i want to do (i will not use any data from that site, my application is different).My requirement is being able to view page source only in XML format.Now I'm clear that xsl is the solution for that, but considering to use this method in asp.net.(use xml/xsl in dynamic asp.net pages) My Question? It is important for me to make the web page output in xml format(visible in xml format in page view source) but looks user friendly for users. 1.how can i do it in asp.net ?

I have a System.Data.Linq.DataContext object and need to know the proper way of closing it out before it goes out of scope in order to prevent the following error when making a bunch of database changes:
Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached.
Can I just call obj.Dispose() or do I need to call obj.Connection.Dispose() or obj.Connection.Close()?
I guess what I want to know is will calling obj.Dispose() end up executing the functionality in obj.Connection.Dispose() and obj.Connection.Close(). The MSDN documentation that I found on these functions does not have this information (at least I didn't see it - I could have mistakenly overlooked it).

I recently started using SSRS 2010 and I didnt come across this issue in 2005 or 2008 versions of reporting services.
I have a report that drills down to child report1 and then that drills down to child report 2 but clicking a field in the report.
When I click on the link on the first report to go to the second report. I get this error message
"A data source instance has no tbeen supplied for the data source ''reprort2dataset"
I am not sure how to handle this error.
All reports run fine stand alone, but when I try to link them up I get that error.
I have a report viewer running the reports in an aspx page.

I have a strange problem. I am adding a LinqDatasource object, and set the context:
[Code]....
Then I get this error:The type 'System.Data.Linq.DataContext' is defined in an assembly that is not referenced. You must add a reference to assembly 'System.Data.Linq, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089'.
On web.config I already have this:
<add assembly="System.Data.Linq, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089"/>
NOTE: The datacontext is in a different project (DLL proect) where I added a refernce to System.Data.Linq.
is there another way adding a refernce to a web project? or only though teh web.config?

I touched on this last year sometime, but I was frustrated at the time and might not have made much sense. I'd like to try again to see if I can get some constructive advice. I am having an issue in choosing a persistence engine. My first choice is FluentNHibernate / NHibernate. However, I am having severe difficulties with their criterion and projection mechanisms. Searching for examples is difficult and when I do find something, I really don't understand what I'm looking at. After a year of trying to bring this together, it still eludes me. I know I could just ask here for help with certain things, but you guys have more things to do than sit and teach me nhibernate criterion. My second choice is Entity Framework 4. I am leaving the CTP 5 off the list for now as there is a major bug in how self-referencing tables are handled at the moment. Now, I have two sub-choices here. The first involves using code first by turning off code generation in the designer and place my enities and edmx in separate libraries (.Domain and .Persistence.Mapping) but this involves a bit of extra work. Then again, for simplicities sake, I could just dump the edmx designer right in the domain library. But this means having the mapping info in the domain library. Not ideal, but it'd work. I still retain the ability to map collections, references and properties as protected or private, and add logic-checking accessors to the entities, as well as setting a protected and public constructor. The entities would still be strong, valid business entities. With these points in mind, what direction should I head?

I've wasted two hours of sleep on a stupid problem. I have an excel 2003 file (xls) that I'd like to import into a table in Sql Server 2008 Express edition. I've done this before, but I can't remember how it's done really. Here's the problem: When I start DTS, I set the excel file as the "data source" and click Next. Now I'm supposed to name/point to the mdf file, but how do I do that? The only thing that appears in the "Server name" text field is the computer's nameSQLEXPRESS, but the mdf file is of course residing in the web site's folder. Also, what should I choose in the "Destination" drop down menu: SQL Server Native Client 10, Micorsoft OLE DB Provider for SqlServer, or what? Regardless of what I choose, I don't find my mdf file in the "Database" drop down menu below . What am I doing wrong? I imagine it's really easy!

I am a final year computer science student from Mumbai University, India.The topic of our undergraduate project is SOA.Under this project we are supposed to build 3 service components and one example website that uses those components.I am quite good with Java and have no experience whatsoever with C# or .NET.I am having hard time deciding the language and platform for our project.Can you please suggest what platform I should go for?Please give me a brief comparison between Java/J2EE and C#.NET/ASP.NET in terms of complexity, ease of development, ease of deployment etc.Edit:The original reason why I put this question is:-
We have to do final year project in group of three. My both partners want to do this project in C# and asp.net and I want to do it in java. Since our project is more of server side, java holds some advantages like cross platform over C#Also this point:-What if we implement 2 parts in C#.net(which they will build) and 1 part in Java(which i will build) and then use them to build a sample website.What level(kind) of difficulty it will accompany?

I have written the below pages (base of question) to populate my asp.net listview control from an objectdatasource. To allow for easier CRUD commands and to make my application more efficient I want to replace this objectdatasource with a linqdatasource but when I attempt this I receive a binding error which stops my ItemDataBound event firing? I'm basically replacing my objectdatasource with the below linqdatasource...
[Code]....

Am I placing my query within the wrong event? Why does my ItemDataBound event not fire?

in other words, reading the content (records that lies within) of a LinqDataSource object programatically (i.e. similar to what the GridView class does internally when binding to a LinqDataSource object).

If I have a Linqdatasource that isn't connected to a a bound control on my page how do I use the data source to read data in the code behind. ie
var query = (from x in linqdatasource select x)
What I actually want to do is create a data array (myArray) within the code, read all of the data from the linqdatasource (selecting 1 field to form tableDataArray), then compare the two arrays and then write (insert) those into in myArray that are not already in the datasource to the datasource (ie execute an insert back on the datasource).
