View 1 RepliesIs there any compromise in using bound controls vs manually coding ado.net connections in asp.net 3.5 ?
In what situation would you use bound controls (do connections using wizards) and in what situation would you manually code your database strings?
How can I bind a datalist control with a list of objects. I have a list of objects that contain a name, desc, and url for menu commands that I am trying to show in a DataList. I am getting the list from a WCF service so I have a list called something like menuList which consists of a List<MenuCommands>. I then do a menuDataList.DataSource = menuList and then a menuList.DataBind but nothing is happening. What am I missing here? I need to use a DataList because I need the commands to be selectable.

<asp:LinkButton ID="EditButton" runat="server" CausesValidation="False"
CommandName="Edit" Text="Edit" />
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:FormView>
on my code behind, I have:
Sub PFTFormView_ItemUpdating(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As FormViewUpdateEventArgs)
Dim PFTObj As New PFT
Dim PFTDST As New Data.DataSet
Dim newPFTLastName As String = DirectCast(PFTFormView.FindControl("txtPFTLastName"), TextBox).Text
Dim newPFTFirstName As String = DirectCast(PFTFormView.FindControl("txtPFTFirstName"), TextBox).Text
PFTObj.PFTLastName = newPFTLastName
PFTObj.PFTFirstName = newPFTFirstName
PFTObj.PFTHome = DirectCast(PFTFormView.FindControl("txtPFTHome"), TextBox).Text
If PFTObj.UpdatePFT(Session("PFTId")) Then
Me.lblErrorMessage.Text = "PFT Update Successfully"
Else
'
Me.lblErrorMessage.Text = "PFT Update UnSuccessfully"
End If
PFTDST = Nothing
PFTObj = Nothing
end sub
The problem is:
PFTObj.PFTLastName = newPFTLastName
PFTObj.PFTFirstName = newPFTFirstName
PFTObj.PFTHome = DirectCast(PFTFormView.FindControl("txtPFTHome"), TextBox).Text
are not returning the updated value from the form.
I use LinqDataSource and need to make insert not from any data-bound controls like formView (just by pressing button on page).
In SqlDataSource I can set InsertParameters like this
<InsertParameters>
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="ddlPrice" DefaultValue="0" Name="Price"
PropertyName="SelectedValue" Type="Int16" />
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="ddlDisc" DefaultValue="0" Name="Discount"
PropertyName="SelectedValue" Type="Int16" />
</InsertParameters>
and then just call Insert().
But in LinqDataSource we don't have method Insert() taking no papameters so I need to create collection with values I want to insert.
in the selected event it seems even though e.TotalRowCount really is the total row count, when I cast e.Result to a type in order to access the actual data only the current page of data is there? not all.
IEnumerable<InventoryGridItem> items = (IEnumerable<InventoryGridItem>)e.Result;
items only has the 15 records for the current gridView page, not all the records, is this normal? If I need to access all the items in the result do I need to stick with the selecting event instead?
I have the following code that I wasnt to alter the Dataset before it is bound to the dropdown list.
[Code]....
What I would like to do is ALTER the dataset for the Parent (dropdown list - ddlRT). I need to format and disable certain topics. I have a script I create before I added the datarelations.
I have a sqlDataSource to populate a grdiview ( simple ) . When I set the sql control to a stored proc that has 4 parameters and person a select * from table ignoring the paramaters it doesn't work. No rweturned results.
<table>
<td>
<asp:TextBox ID="vendorid" runat="server" ></asp:TextBox>
<asp:TextBox ID="productid" runat="server" ></asp:TextBox>
<asp:TextBox ID="productdescription" runat="server"></asp:TextBox>

I have 2 Linq to Entity queries, here they are:
[Code]....
In "query" there are several columns, 2 of them are NIIN and Qty. In "objViewDDRT" there are only 2 columns, they are NIIN and AvailBalance.
What I need to do is for each row in "query" check to see if the NIIN is in "objViewDDRT", and if it is get the AvailBalance for that NIIN from objViewDDRT.
I was put in charge of a database that has no source control, and all work was done in the database. I want to pull all the objects (stored procs, views, tables) from the database, and add to my new source control.
Is there a way to get all the objects into individual files out of a database?
Our database is SQL 2005. I have Visual Studio 2005/2008/2010 (beta 2) at my disposal.
Entity framework easily allows for this but how can I detach objects in linq to sql?
View 1 RepliesHow do I bound a Label to a datasource and its field?I got set up the datasource to a gridview, but don't know how to bind a label to the same datasource.
View 8 RepliesI have a gridview control that displays expenses claims received from clients. I have a template field that contains a checkbox - if this is ticked, a value from the gridview is added to a variable and this is outputted to a label control.
What I then want to do is to update the database according to which row has been ticked. I have so far the following code that adds each value to an array, which I was then hoping to access in the sql query i.e. Update table set value = value where id = (id's added to array)..
Code as follows - so far I'm just displaying the count of values in the array to make sure they are actually being added:

For some reason, some of the fields in our database use a different collation than the default. There doesn't seem to be a pattern as to which fields use the different collations, so I'd like to run a query to find which fields use this collation and change them to the default. Does anyone know how to do this?
View 2 RepliesI have a GridView populated by an ObjectDataSource. I also have several DropDownLists filtering the ObjectDataSource. I found a link providing a way to export a DataSet (or DataTable) to Excel here:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/deborahk/archive/2009/07/23/writing-data-from-a-datatable-to-excel.aspx
ow I can ensure that filters applied to the ObjectDataSource when the method is called are applied. In short, how can I ensure what the UI is displaying is what the file will include when exported?
Here is what I need to do:
- SELECT from a table
- Do something to the data after the SELECT but before anything else
- let the controls that are bound to my data see it.
I've already got working code to Undo my something when Updating or Inserting
These are the requirements:
- use a plain-jane SqlDataSource to do the SELECT
- doing the something has to take place at the SqlDataSource, not in events of the databound controls.
From the MS site the SqlDataSource.Selected event is where I should do "post-processing" however I can't find any examples of doing so.

I have two business objects mapped via LINQ to tables. One of the objects contains an instance of the other object and share a key as an identifier.I want to retrieve Class A and within class A all of Class B's values as well. What I am doing is this:
[Code]....
[Code]....
This seems a little clunky, as in slow. Is there a better way to get the Class B (User) information without making a query every time?
im developing a silverlight project using silverlight 3, vs2008 and linq2sql. when projects starts, im storing all the data from database into some static list variables. so when ever i need data, im reading it from those static list variables. all i want to know is, is it good to store data in static list variables and use it when ever necessary or is it good to get data directly from DataClassesDataContext object like db.mytable. which is the rite and fastest way or retrieving data. i mean which will use less connections to database?

DataTable works. What else?
I have a really weird problem. It actually made me restart the computer.
View 1 RepliesI have a FormView bound to LinqDataSource, that is intended to allow editing of a single product's details, that is selected from a GridView. The LDS has a Where parameter set to point to the GridView control (i.e. a ControlParameter).
View 1 RepliesThis was a pretty disappointing moment - when databinding, using Eval("Contact.LastName") would work. It nicely evaluates the related Linq object's member LastName. If the "Contact" object is null, no error is thrown... instead the field is simply null.
However, the same does not hold for sorting - if there exists a null entry (this object does not have a Contact) then the LinqDataSource throws a NullReferenceException. This means that, if you ever have nulls on your foreign-key objects, you can't use sorting headers in the ListView.
This makes the feature moderately useless - I have to roll my own properties for every single field I'd ever want to sort on. That's insane.
I would like to write Set difference minus operation with Linq on list objects using Except method. [Code]....
Tha above code always returns lstrbb objects.
I created a class library: PRTreatmentReviews. I created a reference for the class library on the website. I checked the property pages and the reference to the class is there. I put objectdatasource on a page and tried to pick up the PRTreatmentReviews class but it's not there? The Class
